DaMN Nuggets
October 24th, 2008 . 12:32 pm . By: Buzz CarrickSeveral juicy little bits in the Dallas Morning News yesterday. 1. Cooper still be chased by foreign teams says his agent. Not shocking. Hitch says they will entertain offers. That’s new. 2. Hitchcock option picked up. As we’ve been saying for a while now, the concert and event profit from PHP was going to get Hich renewed. This tell us the team and the number of fans in the stands is less important that making money. That’s not good new for FCD fans. 7 Comments Comments RSS TrackBack Identifier URI Leave a comment |

When a team sucks as bad as we do EVERYTHING is on the table to improve.
Well that settles it. No new season tickets for me.
I’m as disappointed in Hitch as the next guy, but I’m wondering (honestly) if we shouldn’t be too critical of him. The organization is making money — and doing it in a way that doesn’t necessarily pass *all* of the costs down to the precious few of us who are die-hard DFW soccer fans.
If having concerts helps to pay the bills — and to make the team a viable commercial entity (i.e. one that won’t move/fold, one that will have a few extra bucks to potentially invest in the team or facilities) — I’m all for it.
What’s the alternative? A team in debt? $30/game parking like at the HDC? Paying down the cost over-runs on the backs of STHs?
If it keeps my team in Dallas, and my STs only go up a buck or two each year, I say bring on Jimmy Buffet, Ozzy, et al.
Steve, like you I see the importance of alternative revenue streams for MLS teams/entities. And I am not opposed to keeping Hitch around in some sort of promotion or business capacity. He has, however, proven he doesn’t need to have anything to do with FCD’s player and personnel decisions. I want to see a competent technical director, but I’m not holding my breath for fear of suffocation.
I agree with Big B. Hitch is apparently very good at bringing in concerts and getting FCD in the black, and I love the free parking and reasonable ticket costs… but I would really like to see a true football man in charge of player personnel. That hiring, combined with some inspired player acquisitions, would really help energize the fan base.
I don’t have a problem with Hitch staying as long as his job is not with player personnel decisions. HSG needs to bring in a TD for that.
HSG is in it to make capital. this team isn’t a priority as long as it continues to make profit. if they sell the team, they will lose the stadium and bookings for stadium usage. so, get used to having a mediocre club for years to come. might as well have an expansion club and base them in the city of dallas. i’m all for that
