I have the answer. The 2005 Kansas City Wizards appear to be the only team to ever accomplish this with a GD of +8, which tied for 4th highest GD that season with FCD.

The only consolation is that we won't be last.. Galaxy and San Jose get to fight it out for last place.

With both Galaxy and FCD eliminated, one wonders if there is anything worth playing for. Personally, I think it would be great to see FCD and SJ win, leaving Landy and the Gals to celebrate last place.

An interesting, closely related question would be whether a team has EVER not made the playoffs having a third-best or better GD.

I'm trying to figure out how many times in MLS history a team has missed the playoffs with a positive goal differential. I'm sure it has happened a few times. Can anyone help with this?
