SuperDraft Pick Analysis
September 22nd, 2008 . By: Buzz CarrickOne of my favorite blogs out there is almost always interesting Climbing the Ladder. It’s a site focused on dedicated to number and stats. While it’s not necessarily entertaining and loony like The Offside Rules (another favorite) it does often have intriguing info that can be mined for deeper understanding of FC Dallas and MLS. I specifically mention Climbing the Ladder today because it has a post that I want to share on a topic near and dear to my heart, the MLS SuperDraft. Specifically this post is the first in a pick by pick analysis of the best players at every rank in the SuperDraft. Why should you care? Well for one it’s kinda fun, but mainly cause it will give you a good idea of the relative value of picks. This analysis starts with picks #60 through #112. Here’s a few points, thoughts, and ideas about this group of picks. I’ll list them in the order they came to me when I read this first bunch. Don’t worry I’m not going to comment on every pick. - Pick #63: David Chun. One of Schellas Hyndman’s boys out of SMU. Holding mid. - Pick #64: FCD’s own Kansas City’s own Abe Thompson is the clear winner. The first of two late Colin Clarke picks that make the list. - Pick #65: The Ladder picks Holmes based on his USL-2 play, I don’t agree. ( The Ladder picked Chiles, I misunderstood it.) The pick should be Kraig Chiles of Chivas USA. He’s got a little something and will eventually be a MLS starter I believe. You know sometimes when a guy just has a little something that makes you notice? That was my reaction to Chiles when I saw FCD played Chivas USA in person earlier this year in LA. - Pick #67: The Ladder mentions Saavedra being picked way low as a P-40. Here’s why. He was a requested P-40 signing by the “previous regime” (i.e. Dave Dir and co.) in Dallas and Jeffries had to take him with the last round pick since Dallas was the team that requested his signing. also at pick #67 is Drew McAthy who I really missed on, thought that guy was going to be really good. - Pick #71: FCD’s Aaron Pitchkolan. Another late Colin Clarke pick that is still in MLS and with four expansion teams coming may end up starting for someone, if not for FC Dallas. - Pick #72: FCD’s 05 pick Drew Cavanagh I thought would be better than Pitch, but he opted to pass on a developmental contract to go home to play for the Charleston Battery and we’ve heard nothing from him since. Might be in lesson in there. - Pick #78: Yannick Reyering is, according to Schellas, going to come out next spring. 6′8″ forward scored a bunch of goals in the ACC, I look forward to seeing what he has in FCD camp. - Pick #86: The Ladder goes with the keeper Kennedy. I would have gone with Wasson who was a terrific player at Tulsa and was a starter in MLS with Colorado before taking a shot over season. He’s a outside left mid or defender who can really get forward. - Pick #87: Peter Louis spent a lot of time in FCD camp without being on the roster. Last I checked he was playing in Finland courtesy of Simo Valakari who got him a contract over there. - Pick #91 is impressive. McTavish is a starter for United. Gargan played a bunch for Colorado and was with Chivas USA until he just retired. Ustruck is still with Houston and plays reserve games, Gilkerson is still with NY. That’s 4 for 4 at that spot. - Pick #92: Another of Schellas’ SMU boys who will be coming out this spring. He’s a d-mid. - Pick #97: Zach Pope was a guest player for FCD is last week’s reserve game. There’s my $.02. I look forward to the next batch of picks. No Comments No comments yet. Comments RSS TrackBack Identifier URI Leave a comment |
