Practice Observations: White Knight
September 24th, 2008 . 3:16 pm . By: Buzz Carrick
This is the time of year I love, the fall. The weather is turning and the battle for the Supporters Shield (most important title in my view) and MLS Cup playoff spots (most important to most other people) goes into the final stretch. It’s when the usually tame MLS regular season games become more important. Training fells real positive after the big win, nice vibe today. We’ll see how long it carries. News, Notes, & Observations- Duilio Davino and Victor Sikora are both full speed in training, although certainly that is different speed for each guy. Schellas says he wants both players to get some minutes off the bench before they are up for a starting spot. Both will be on the bench this weekend it sure sounds like. Frankly to my eye Davino looks a touch hesitant or unsure in his movement. Protecting the tow I imagine. - Schellas says they staff worked out two weeks ago who they would be protecting and who the will not in the expansion draft. The list is done. Schellas wanted to get it out of the way so he wouldn’t have it fall in his lap during crunch time. I’ll do my version at some point down the line. - Bryant Rueckner is the only guest player around these days. He’s a 4th keeper in training. - Emerson Hyndman still participating. Although not in the final big drill. - No specific word on Brek Shea other than rehab and recovery somewhere. There isn’t a ton going on frankly at this point in the year. Catching up with Schellas HyndmanDon’t let it slip your mind that the coach speak translations are a bit. I thought it might be interesting to list the reporters who asked the questions I put in here, just for a taste of how things go. FYI I almost never put in every question, today this is about 1/3 to 1/4 of the questions asked. Thoughts on Ricchetti of late? (Tobias Lopez, Star-Telegram)
Buzz’s Coach Speak Translator: He’s the man, we probably don’t pay him enough. Although I wish he would speak up more. Does Rocha finally “get” what it is you want form him? (Steve Hunt, MLSnet.com)
Buzz’s Coach Speak Translator: I coached him up. You feel like the goal helped stop some of the criticism that you’re playing [Bruno Guarda] because he’s a favorite, because of your relationship with him? Can you comment on that? (Diego Aparicio, Al Dia & Dallas Morning News)
Buzz’s Coach Speak Translator: He plays cause he does what I ask, that’s what makes him a favorite. This team has been on a bit of a rollercoaster this year, high highs and low lows. What makes a team be streaky and inconsistent like that? (Buzz Carrick, 3rd Degree)
Buzz’s Coach Speak Translator: You’ve been right all along, a team needs a system and you get players that fit the system. Where is Dax McCarty in the current setup? (Tobias Lopez)
Buzz’s Coach Speak Translator: On the bench. TrainingSome passing and movement drills today after the jogging and stretching. Next up was some 40×40 possession stuff, three teams of 8. two teams play one team is a neutral on the outside of the field. Red: Rowland, Rocha, Guarda, Moor, Wadsworth, Davino, Hyndman, Ricchetti. Next up was a 40×40 box with two full goals. 3 defenders in front of each goal with 2 forwards on attack each end. Three midfielders would go from end to end joining the two attackers to make a 5v3. Drill looks to be about transition game and reaction. Last drill was two mini- games with full goals. About 30×30 fields each. Each team played each other team. Your overall winning team is in bold below. Green: Cooper, McCarty, Ricchetti, Daniels, Moor, Ferruzzi Schellas hammered them with some fitness running to end training. I fully applaud how much Schellas is putting into fitness as that was one large criticism I had of Morrow club. I expect next spring to be a killer. Lineup PredictionIt’s a no brainer, Davino and Sikora not being ready. Particularly since after a 4-1 win everyone will keep their spots.
Frankly I don’t have a lot to complain about in the above, although I might start Avila on the left. Thought of the DayThis weekend Davino will get some minutes and then next week he will start. Quite frankly I’m not sure he should. I know that $400,000 players play, but the team is playing well on defense without him. Pitchkolan, the most likely to sit in Dainvo’s return, doesn’t deserve to lose his job just cause the other guy gets paid a lot. I assume it won’t be Moor dropped since he just signed a new deal and is captain when Davino is out. Pitch has worked his but off, kept his mouth shut, and continues to play solid soccer. Do you build a team around him? No, but he’s up to starting in this league and the one place FCD needs help now is set pieces. Davino doesn’t help on set pieces. But mostly Pitch just deserves to keep his spot. In a way Pitchkolan is the champion of all of us; the less talented, hard working, less hyped, the dedicated to the game, those who dreamed we would make it on hard work alone. If there is justice in soccer the gods of the game will reward him, and thus us, by keeping him in the lineup. Unfortunately the gods of commerce will win and Davino will start. Much to my disappointment. 25 Comments Comments RSS TrackBack Identifier URI Leave a comment | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

love the comment on Pitch…so true
Best. Movie. Quote. Ever.
Can I get an Amen on the Pitch comment?
Last home game I asked Coops dad about Pitch. He told me if I was coaching, he would be automatic choice in central defense. I then asked if he thought he could play in Europe, he said absolutely. He considers him a great pro. He also feels he has fantastic potential, a real unsung hero this season.
Got a lot out of the coach’s questions; tells me he knows the fans aren’t happy and at least hears / reads the comments (”That’s coming form you and the fans, that’s not coming from me.”) and also sounds like major changes are in store for the off-season (”players to fit the sturcture” / system) which I guess we all already knew.
Wasn’t one of the first things SH said when he took over was he didnt care how much a player makes when it comes to playing time? The defense has looked better with him out, Pitch provides more athleticism (wow there is a sentence you dont say much)
should have asked him why the hell his 12 year old grandson is still involved with the play-offs on the line. Not buying the Guarda bit either, he gives the ball away more than anyone out there.
Buzz,
Is Guarda able to keep up with the mental and speed of play in practice? Does he show anything more in practice that I just don’t see in games?
Carl, sure he can. I happen to think eventually Guarda will be very good. But I question if he was ready. He’s struggling at times and gets caught in possession some. It’ll be painful some to watch him struggle but he is improving. Best I hope for at this point is that it will be worth it when he breaks through to a high level.
how many players are on the unprotected list?
I’ll start it with:
Bobby Rhine (retirement?)
Andrew Daniels (still cant cut it)
Kenny Cooper (cuz he’ll be gone anyway like Goodson)
David Wagenfuhr (injury)
Dario Sala (gk depth in FCD & MLS, he can be risked to not be taken)
Gotta protect Kenny. Even if he’s gone, HSC wants their piece of the transfer fee.
Buzz, I’m actually afraid to ask this, but I have to: Do you think Dax has a future here at FCD? I never even worried about it before, but given the current situation, I can’t help it now.
What GK depth in MLS? LA and Chivas both need offseason upgrades. If Onstadt retires, Houston will have Caig in goal.
MLS is so thin on GKS, DCU went a got a second-string keeper from the Swiss league.
Buzz,
First, thanks for the practice report, definitely the highlight of this blog (though I would love to see more of my second favorite, Monday Morning CB).
Refresh us on the expansion draft rules. Outside of the 11, are Gen Adidas players and DPs protected automatically?
Pitch = Eck.
Heart, desire,determination, work ethic.
I agree with Jason S. about leaving Sala unprotected. Unless Schellas has a verbal agreement with the folks in Seattle, they could easily take Sala and trade him to somebody who needs a gk (i.e. L.A. and Chivas.) That would leave us in the very situation that L.A. and Chivas are both in now.
Buzz, can we leave Davino unprotected? Let’s be honest, nobody is going to take an aging defender at $400,000…nobody except FCD.
TT, I’ll do an article with my take toward the end of the season.
But I to think you have to protect Cooper as he’s not out of contract. That’s the difference between him and Goodson situations.
CM, unfortunately, no I do not. But that’s also an article for the end of the season.
Steve, sorry about the lack of MMG. A combination of work and travel schedule has prevented me from doing them lately. But outside of protecting 11. GAs don’t count either way. DPs have to be protected. And you can only expose 1 international. developmental players who are not GA can be exposed.
Matt, yes you can leave Davin unprotected. And I would agree that no one is likly to take a $400,000 guarantee defender. And if they do it just helps FCD clear cap since Pitch is playing well enough to not make me miss Davino.
you can go find big, athletic keepers in the US. Look at Cervi, he chose not to play in MLS but has sat with the Nats.
LA is in its predicament cuz of cap restraints, but they have Josh Wicks now, who was a good gk in USL-1.
Chivas got stuck out by Guzan leaving. either one of these teams would take Burse, Seitz, Reynish, Coundoul, Gruenebaum, Brian Edwards, etc if they could get their hands on them. i’m surprised Chivas hasnt purged the USL rosters.
I almost left Dax unprotected on my list but couldnt remember if he was GA still or not.
I agree about Cooper cuz i forgot he’s still under contract. FCD will protect him to get the fee that will surely come from Europe.
Coaches do fitness when they don’t know what else to do….good stuff college coach.
I see the 12 year old is out again. That really cheapens everything going on. If he gets hurt BAD it’s all on grand dad.
is dax’s future even in MLS or is he contemplating going to europe? if he is, maybe that’s why SH is holding him back from getting on the pitch.
Dax is gone if not this year when his contract ends. Its as good as done. Never seen an organization/coach waste as much talent. When you have one of the up and coming stars of us soccer you don’t piss on him and put him on the backburner
Buzz,
With the news of Sala wanting a new and improved deal was he the other player you mentioned that hadn’t made it public yet?
fcd96, the other player that was promised money and didn’t get it still has not spoken publicly about it. Since he asked me not to put his name out there I won’t until he says something.
Here’s a guess at the players who were promised money that didn’t materialise. Pablo R,Dario,Juan Toja and Cooper.
PLenty of expensive guys on the benches of winning teams right now – Christian Gomez, Erpen, Ihemelu, Casey in Colorado and Marinelli and Claudio Lopez in KC.
I wouldn’t put Davino in by default, so i guess it really depends on what happens in Sunday’s game for me.
