This trade happened fast, stay tuned as we work on details.

KC has put out a press release…

Kansas City Wizards Acquire Forward Abe Thompson from FC Dallas

(September 5, 2008) – The Kansas City Wizards acquired forward Abe Thompson Friday from FC Dallas for allocation money. Thompson attended the University of Maryland before spending the last four seasons with FC Dallas. The move comes two days after the Wizards traded for attacker Herculez Gomez from the Colorado Rapids. The Wizards waived midfielder Ryan McMahen to make room on the 18-man roster. Per League and team policy, further financial details are not disclosed.

“Abe Thompson is a big, strong target forward who makes great runs off the ball and always puts himself in dangerous spots,” Technical Director Peter Vermes said. “He is a good finisher with both feet and his head and we are excited for him to come to Kansas City. We feel good about our last two moves.”

“Adding two quality attacking players in the last two days like Herculez Gomez and Abe Thompson can only help our push toward the MLS Cup Playoffs,” Head Coach Curt Onalfo said. “We now have two more attacking options at our disposal, which will make the entire team stronger. I look forward to getting both players into training and helping them adjust quickly to their new teammates and our style of play.”

Thompson, 26, was selected by FC Dallas in the 2nd round (16th overall) of the 2005 Supplemental Draft* after a standout career at Maryland. He recorded 43 goals and 26 assists in 73 career games with the Terrapins. Since joining Dallas, Thompson has scored 14 goals and added 11 assists in 69 games (32 starts) over the last four seasons. This year, Thompson has three goals and one assist.

Thompson was the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Virginia in 2000 after leading W.T. Woodson High School to a state championship. He scored 84 goals and added 18 assists in a stellar high school career. At Maryland, he was named a semifinalist for the prestigious Hermann trophy in both his junior and senior seasons.

*The MLS Supplemental Draft is a four-round draft held at a later date than the MLS SuperDraft. A 1st round Supplemental Draft selection is, in essence, a 5th round draft pick. In the Supplemental Draft, teams can select players from the lower divisions of professional soccer in the United States, including the United Soccer Leagues.

I honestly don’t even know what to say right now.

Best of luck, Abe. You will be missed.

Well, at least Abe might finally get a fair shot at a starting role. If he had only gone to SMU then he would have been starting the last games ahead of Cooper.

I liked Abe, too, but FCD has too many forwards, and with his lack of pace, I’m curious of how much more he can progress. Hope they got a decent sized allocation, though.
A blockbuster signing better come in the winter.

Better than losing Oduro, IMHO. But we may well lose Birdman in the offseason, too.

  7. Comment by Moose McDowell on September 5, 2008 8:34 AM

I guess I should count myself lucky to have gotten his autograph on my jersey Saturday. Good luck, Abe.

Great for Abe! He will get consistent minutes and score lots of goals. His strike rate has been amoung the best in the league and now adding time on the pitch will add goals.

This is a huge deal for KC and one more sign FCD doesn’t have clue. It’s now obvious that FCD is the worst current team in the league and don’t seem to care.

    FIRE SH NOW!!!!

  9. Comment by Eugene on September 5, 2008 8:51 AM

Okay, that’s it. I’m taking a break from this team. Thompson is nothing BUT effort and heart. He’s the kind of player that made me proud to be an FCD fan.

This move came from either Hyndman or Ellinger, and either way, it stinks.

The wheels on bus keep falling off, falling off, falling off………..

  11. Comment by James on September 5, 2008 9:03 AM

What do we need allocation money for at this point in the season?

  12. Comment by SteveToro on September 5, 2008 9:08 AM

It’s not just our heart — our physicality seems to be dropping off. One of the things that I liked about this team was the fact that they weren’t intimidated going into tackles, jump balls, etc. They wouldn’t always win them, but they wouldn’t also let themselves get pushed around. Now that core is largely gone — the players that are left are too green (or too finesse-oriented) to keep from getting pushed around.

I mean, other than Adrian, who can help make sure our legion of 5′6″ mids don’t get beat up game after game?

  13. Comment by ED on September 5, 2008 9:27 AM

    Buzz,

What is the management plan for all of the allocation money we’ve accumulated recently?
We whiffed at pretty much everyone we tried to get during the transfer window. Except Sikora, who isn’t a BIG signing…
The allocation money isn’t like cash in the bank for HSG, just MLS funny money to help with the salary cap. If we don’t sign someboy using the allocation money then we have just given away Abe – correct??

  14. Comment by Buzz Carrick on September 5, 2008 9:42 AM

Yes, we won’t know how to view this trade until the “money” gets used.

  15. Comment by Fred on September 5, 2008 10:49 AM

Ditto, all of the above. How may game winning or tying goals did Abe have this year? This is too frustrating! We had a small glimmer of hope there for 4 or 5 games. I may just send back the rest of my season tickets for this year. I hear SMU supposed to have good team this year…

  16. Comment by Fayebalene on September 5, 2008 11:49 AM

 Buzz I feel we are losing grip of the team the deal with Rocha Abe. This is wrong. Abe did heart to the team when Abe came out you could hear the fans going nuts he would make something happen. All I can say is God bless him and when he comes back don’t forget the fans who loved you and don’t be bitter go tothe coach say Thank you with a smile. Remember kindness is the best medicine. He will say WHAT? I screwd up when I let Abe go.

  17. Comment by the other alex on September 5, 2008 1:10 PM

The money will go straight into the Hunts back pocket. I beleive they are convinced that cheap players, especially cheap college players are the way to go. Schellas will give them what they want and in truth HSG cares about concerts and couldn’t give a shot about FCD.

  18. Comment by hutchtx on September 5, 2008 2:32 PM

    Oh, the ironies!

They handed out the latest edition of the Free Kick magazine last night. Guess who were on the two player mini posters??

    Juan Toja and Abe Thompson

“I am getting out of here!” Cooper

  20. Comment by Kevin on September 5, 2008 4:30 PM

Over the last year we have turned over almost every player i care about…a process that will be complete when Cooper makes a run for it.

This is unreal…i was not even an Abe fan…but he contributed and always worked his tail off.

i can no longer name a starting 11…time to root for someone else. 5 season tickets…i had a game last year where i bought 20 and took my whole family. I am done with that.

    Sad really…

  21. Comment by SH on September 5, 2008 4:31 PM

I would like to announce the signing of my 12 year old grandson as our new starter. We are going to finally take the NCAA Division I title!

    Love,

    SH

I had real hopes for FCD this year, but this team is pathetic.

Give me a USL-1 team in Oak Cliff and bring soccer back to the people!!!

Only in my dreams!!! I can tell you one thing…the beer lines would be longer than the lemon chills lines.

  23. Comment by Nathan on September 5, 2008 7:22 PM

    Buzz,

Any truth vs rumor on why Rocha did not dress last night?

I could be reading too much into it, but the DMN article makes it sound like the player / coach issues are not truly resolved.

Is this issue really put to bed? Certainly doesn’t seem like it.

    What do your sources say?

  24. Comment by ED on September 5, 2008 7:29 PM

Wrong “other alex” it is “allocation money”, not cash or currency. HSG cannot bank it. Allocation money is used to reduce salary cap impact of a player’s salary. Best use of allocation money is Columbus and Scheletto. He is paid over DP $$$, but Columbus used allocation money to cover part of it so he does not count as a DP.

  25. Comment by the other alex on September 5, 2008 7:41 PM

Either way its money the Hunts don’t have to spend. The only money they are interested in spending is yours.

  26. Comment by Buzz Carrick on September 5, 2008 7:45 PM

What I’m getting so far is Rocha was pulled for speaking in the paper about being subbed/playing time.

I’ll keep working it, but so far that’s all it is. The question will be if he comes back into training and into the first team.

  27. Comment by SH on September 5, 2008 8:54 PM

You guys keep making all of these cracks and i will pull you from the team!! I will get out there myself and give you a whack to the ball sack!!

    SH

  28. Comment by dallassux on September 5, 2008 9:57 PM

why don’t they take the money and buy another Latin American/smu central midfielder while continuing to put our young talent on the bench or out of position.. I mean dax was on the u23 national team for crying out loud.. How is he still on the bench?.. How not to run your team: see HSG/ schellas..this organization is a joke

    …wtf is SH thinking lately?
    is he on drugs perhaps?

  31. Comment by Big Easy Hoops on September 6, 2008 8:43 PM

I really want to give this team my continued support, but since the Morrow firing things have gone south. Regardless of whether we actually win any games, I want to support a team that gives all its heart and soul on the field. Dallas just doesn’t seem to have any of it . . . and it seems to be the coaching and F.O. that is sucking the life out of the players.
Good luck Abe, you were always a favorite of mine. When my kids ask what the definition of supersub is, I will tell them Abe Thompson!

  32. Comment by nicky on September 8, 2008 7:16 PM

I say Abe ends up in Norway with his childhood buddy Badson after the season. I hear Clay’s got offers to move to bigger clubs already in Germany and Denmark so maybe Abe won’t join him in Norway. Oh well, good for both of them on furthering their careers.
