Rocha Suspended?

August 26th, 2008 . 10:56 am . By: Buzz Carrick

One thing was very clear today, FCD’s right midfielder and leading assist man André Rocha was missing form training.  What remains abundantly unclear is why he was missing.  It appears that on some level Rocha may have been suspended.  Sorta.  FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman had the explanation, er… reason… um… here’s what he said.  “Rocha has had an issue.  We’ve addressed the issue and we’re taking care of it internally.”

At least we know these circumstances have arisen from last weekend’s game when Rocha was again subbed at the 60 minute mark.  Hyndman says if he’s not getting what he wants out of a player he’ll take him off at the 60 minute mark and that is why Rocha has frequently been pulled at that interval.  So was Rocha’s reaction to being subbed the reason for his absence today?

Probably.  I don’t think… ah… I’ve always tired to be honest with you guys.  I think… [pause] … it may come through as a misunderstanding.  Because in Brazil and other countries when your subbed out you go straight to the locker room cause you’re not being used, but I don’t think that’s the standard of our culture.  So we want to go with the idea that it’s just a misunderstanding.

Several follow up questions to Hyndman failed to get a comment on Rocha’s availability this weekend.  The implication seems to be form Schellas that the ball somehow rests in Rocha’s court.  It may not be till game time that we know the verdict, although Hyndman says the matter is closed.

This is an internal matter and we’ve addressed it.  Hopefully it’s over.  And why do we say hopefully?  As far as I’m concerned it’s over, but you never know what the player thinks.  So hopefully it’s over and I believe Andre understands the whole situation.  He was very apologetic and didn’t do it for spite.

So, are you working on today’s Practice Observations and Monday Morning Gaffer?

I think he is the 2nd best player on the field in every game for FCD. He works well with Cooper; Runs back on D. Hardly has bad passes or bad days like other players. Solid player. I hate it every time I see him subed off. We are going to end up loosing him to or getting a 2nd season like Toja if we don’t watch it.

    Doug, practice yes.

Gaffer I haven’t been able to watch the game yet due to other commitments. If I can get it in by this weekend I’ll do one.

It’s hard for a lot of the guys to adjust to a college coach but hopefully there will be changes as necessary. HS is much better with younger players who think less and just do what they are asked w/o thinking. Apparently Rocha is not one of those types of player.

“Not getting what he wants out of a player”?? Exactly what does he want out of Rocha, anyway, because apparently scoring a golazo and leading the team in assists isn’t quite enough.

    (Resumes bashing head on desk…)

I haven’t really seen any of our subs put in the effort or quality that Rocha has. Perhaps missing his defensive upside is why we give up late goals?

I have a quote about what he is looking for in Rocha on the field. It will be in today’s practice report.

    Thanks in advance, Buzz.

Assuming there is some rational explanation for constantly pulling Rocha way too early for our liking, then wouldn’t it also mean that the 60 minute mark is somewhat arbitrary? If the player isn’t giving what you’re looking for, then why leave him out there even that long?

Either way, I’m gonna need a real good explanation before this makes any sense at all.

Rocha needs to learn to play more like Saragosa if he wants to get a full 90 in

Ditto to the above comments. I’m looking forward to your practice report and am really puzzled by some of the things SH does. For the most part, I have really liked his approach and how he has worked on fitness.,etc. At times, this team looks great. At times. But when it comes to subs and player’s true abilities? . . . I just don’t get it.

who usually subs in for rocha…bruno guarda. now, tell me if i’m wrong, but at this point, isn’t bruno playing much worse that rocha? if that’s the case, why sub him out at all? i can understand if it were dax, but bruno doesn’t seem to have his feet firmly set on the mls grounds just yet.

The bus coach is really starting to get on my nerves. This is silly, what he is doing. I want a new coach.

    Rocha who?????

I would love to see him gone. He does not play with others but for himself and this is a team and you need to play like a team. Rocha never passed to Toja and always “took” every moment away from Dax.

He does not play well here and as a team player so Goodbye Joker!

Rocha is very good but also frustrating. SH has been sending a message to him by subbing him out, and is now being less subtle. If he can get through to him, fantastic. If not, SH will have alienated a useful player who isn’t quite a fit for this system.
I’ll wait and see before fully passing judgement, but this is risky.

Rocha is way better than Guarda and has no business being taken out for a college player.Ever.

This is getting hard to watch. All of the players except for Cooper that made this team fun to watch – Alvarez, Toja, Ricardihno, Rocha, Oduro…are all in some form of trouble with SH or gone.

You can argue Dax is the future of the team – and i love Dax, but i have seen hundreds of guys like Dax. The “trouble makers” playing well and working for a coach who is able to get them to ‘mind their manners’ is what makes the Cowboys a great team. At FCD we just run them off. We are slipping and i am shocked nobody else sees this…

At least when we fired whats his face we had an under-performing talented team. Soon we will just be a bad team.

Renewing my season tickets…not so much. I am tired of being a sucker. Davino wig night? Should have been Davino crutch night.
