A fresh voice behind the microphone

By: Chamo JonesWhile Marcelo Balboa is “pulling the strings” at the Olimpics for NBC’s coverage of the soccer matches, HDNet gave the color commentary microphone to the recently retired Kyle Martino for their broadcast of the match between the Chicago Fire and the New England Revolution. Kyle proved to be an excellent commentator. He was calm, collected, concise, eloquent and did not try to force it at any point of the broadcast. He managed to stay away from any cliches that any of the current MLS announcers use, although likely he will develop his own over time. His knowledge of the league and the players was a breath of fresh air. And he wasn’t afraid to voice a hot sports opinion. A very impressive performance. I agree, he did a great job.
I did not know he retired. Was it because of concussions?
He was a victim of the LA Galaxy salary cap. Waived on March 3rd earlier this year.
This is excellent news. I have Comcast, i.e. basically no Olympic soccer coverage, so I had no idea he was doing this.
I always loved Martino when he played for the Galaxy. He got so hosed by the team and the salary cap. The bigger picture was that when they brought in Carlos Ruiz, that gave the Galaxy three DP salaries to fit under the cap, so players making over $50,000 were cut to make way for lower-paid players. Martino and Kelly Gray were the victims. Kelly Gray eventually got picked up by Colorado (and then San Jose), but I think teams were a little skittish about Kyle’s injury record, so he wasn’t picked up.
I am really pleased to hear that Kyle is doing this, and also that he’s doing it well. Let’s hope that it leads to a permanent career.

That’s bizarre. I watched the game and trying to figure out how to comment on Martino either here or via BigSoccer. I agree, very refreshing and his commentary was very composed and smooth.

I agree…he did a good job. Not bad…but he did a good job. I think he did a good job, but after thinking about it and watching the replay, I think he did a good job…
