FCD Juniors in SUM U17 Cup

July 4th, 2008 . By: Buzz Carrick

The FC Dallas Juniors program is set to make one of their first forays into the larger scale tournaments as a team made up of members of the FCD Juniors U16 and U18 squads will enter the SUM U17 Cup this weekend in Colorado. While we don’t know a ton about these players we can give you some notes on a few of them.

Bryan Leyva - The previously 13 year old wonder kid (who’s obviously older now) who has Mexican ancestry and got invited to train with the Mexican senior side when they were in Dallas once. Has had trials with Madrid and in Mexico. One hopes he’s been tagged as a home grown player so FCD could in theory sign

Gabriel Funes - The Winner of Sueño Dalas MLS 2008, Funes Arlington High to a 19-1 record last year, scoring 35 goals. Here he is with Alvarez.

Noel Luna (Fort Worth)
and Rafael Martinez JR (Dallas) - were also involved with Sueno finishing in the top 12. They, along with Gabriel Funes, were the first players invited to join FCD Juniors.

Ramiro Funes - Sometimes referred to as Juan in the Sueno contest, Gabriel’s brother is a midfielder and made the Sueno final 12. He also plays for Arlington.

Nate Dombrowski - Plays at Dallas Jesuit with Kenny Cooper’s younger brother Joe. Despite the long odds is apparently not the brother of Chad and Tighe Dombrowski who both played for University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and now both play in USL-1 and have had flirts with MLS teams.

If you know something about one of these kids, feel free to tell us all about them in the comments here. Here’s the PR material…

FCD JUNIORS TRAVEL TO COLORADO FOR SUM U-17 CUP

The FC Dallas Juniors team is participating in Soccer United Marketing’s second-annual Youth Development soccer tournament, SUM U-17 Cup, which kicks off on Friday, July 4 at the soccer complex at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo. The tournament features 14 Major League Soccer sponsored U-17 Youth Development teams and will culminate with the championship game being played on Thursday, July 10.

The 14-team pool is comprised of the U-17 academy teams sponsored by MLS clubs excluding the San Jose Earthquakes and with two teams representing the Colorado Rapids. The 14 teams will compete in a round robin group phase, with the four group winners advancing to the semifinals. The champion will take home the coveted SUM U-17 Cup and earns the opportunity to participate in the 2009 Trofeo Quixote U-17 tournament in Madrid, Spain. The second place team will gain entry into the prestigious Super Group in the 2009 Dallas Cup youth tournament in Frisco, Texas. The losing semifinalists will participate in the Dallas Cup U-19 group.

The FC Dallas Juniors team, coached by Chris Hayden, includes players from both the U-16 and U-18 FCD Juniors’ teams. FC Dallas has been placed in Group C, along with Chivas USA and the Columbus Crew. GK-Nelson Morales….really big gk. I think plays for Solar now but started on Latino Americana club/academy. WT White. excellent distribution and control of box, but has squirrelly moments.

Jael Barrera…another Latino Americana player. sweeper type with speed and skill. will foul smartly if needed but provides alot of cover for marking defenders across field

London Woodberry….Terry Woodberry (Sidekicks) son. usually a wide mid/forward. lotta speed and quickness but rail thin. Beasley type player at a lower level, of course. McKinney HS

Bradlee Baladez….very skilled little player. attacker that likes to dribble and distribute

Alexei Reyes…..very creative player. future pro. high level ODP and probably National Pool. should fill a spot behind forward line. Jesuit.

Alex Molano…..Willie Molano son (Sidekicks & DFW Tejanos) small player thats not really special but very smart and can play a number of positions along midfield. wont get into trouble with ball.

    thats what i got.

London Woodberry is related to Terry, but do not believe LW is TW’s son. Nephew maybe.

I think the Baladez guy is also the kicker for his high school football team in Mesquite. Pretty sure he played for his dad at a small club called xcelex.

With him and the boys from latino americans, kind of goes to show kids really can develop on teams that don’t dominate the classic leagues.
