FCD Makes Offer to Cooper
July 26th, 2008 . 10:05 am . By: Buzz CarrickAccording to the infallible Tobias Lopez, FC Dallas has made an offer to Kenny Cooper Jr with a contract deal that with incentives that FCD GM Micheal Hitchcock ways would pay Cooper just under the DP ranges ($415,000). Just as I suggested two weeks ago, that offer will put Cooper squarely in the Taylor Twellman category ($350,000 base) and it right on the mark for his production and potential in the current MLS salary structure. So now the ball in firmly in Cooper’s court. Will he take the offer as I suggested he might, or will he play out the year and bolt for the big money offer by being the first American and MLS player to use the FIFA Webster ruling? Or will HSG/FCD sell him off to a club in the current window ($3 Mil US might do it.) I certainly won’t hold any grudges if Cooper and Co. make the big money play as the earning window for a pro soccer player is short. And I won’t blame HSG/FCD for waiting for Cooper to prove recovery of form after the broken leg. If it doesn’t work out in the middle, where all the FCD fans I’m sure hope it does, then we’ll all just have to let bygone be bygones. C’est la vie. It will now be interesting to see if it’s really has been about promises Lamar Hunt made to Cooper that HSG hasn’t lived up to, or if it’s really just been a big money contract ploy all along. Time will tell. 26 Comments Comments RSS TrackBack Identifier URI Leave a comment |

Finally some good news, if true.
I love this move by MLS. With it, they regained most of the leverage in this situation. If Cooper was indeed betting that FCD wouldn’t pay him then he really has two choices – take the cash and play here another 2 years or reject it and be immediately sold to a lower-level European team.
No way will FCD get nothing (relative or otherwise) for a player of this quality, even if it means dragging his name through the mud by saying how much cash he passed up. There is just too much at stake here with such low attendance.
this is the start of something good. HSG at least realizes how much coop means to the team. it also shows that if you prove yourself and be a team guy, you will earn a nice contract.
this is definitely good news
now…will he take it?
I think Coop would rather stay here then go to a lower level European club like a Rosenberg. Kenny is a smart guy.
It’s not up to Kenny, it’s up to his Dad – and his Dad wants the money from Europe.
Buzz,
If Rosenborg was to offer $3 Mil and FCD/MLS were to accept, how much does Coop get? Does he make money from the transaction itself, or does FCD/MLS keep the entire fee? I never quite understand the details of these transactions.
@ Teddy
The club (or in this case the club and MLS) get the full amount of the buy. The player gets nothing from that. The player’s contract is negotiated seperately.
This ship may have sailed. Cooper has to ask himself if he wants to be associated with people that lie to him and only do the right thing when trapped into it. He will likely just move on like Goodson did, you just can trust people who have proven untrustworthy. Kenny will move on to much bigger things and good luck to him.
Zarco…thank you for your interesting perspective.
Inane, but interesting.
JC thanks for the info.
I do not ever recall Cooper or his dad saying Lamar made any promises. I do recall reading that the front office and Colin Clarke made the promise of a new contract. If you have followed the old mans career as i did here in Dallas, its always been about hard work and dedication. I doubt Coops dad would let his son go anywhere just for the money. We must all remember this kid walked away from a $300,000 contract at Manchester United with 6 months left on the contract. He came back to Dallas for $80,000. For the Cooper’s it is all about respect. Being a Tornado fan, i do recall Coops dad always going to bat for people like Kyle Rote Jr, Neil Cohen, the late Glen Myyernick. and many other young Americans. It appears somethings never change.
If Coop doesn’t understand that the Hunt’s wanted to make sure that he wasn’t damaged goods after Tyrone Marshall broke his leg he has a problem. What the Hunts did was smart. The contracted he was “promised” is now on the table. What did you want the Hunts to do hand a guy on crutches and a broken leg $400,000 to stand around and get fit and then pray to god he comes back and plays the same as he did before?
captincanuck. This is why this franchise does not see the big picture. Cooper was told I believe, he would get a new contact after he accomplished what he did the first season. He got injured way after the commitment was made. If you follow the EPL Ferguson made a commitment to Van Nistelroy, then he tore his ACL. EVEN THOUGH HE GOT INJURED, FERGUSON HONORED THE AGREEMENT. By now the rest is history. If this is the way the Hunts want to do business, God bless you Kenny, move on to a team who appreciates you man. What the Hunts did was dumb, they under estimated Coops character. If only Lamar was alive today, this would never have happened.
Very good Buzz, and I agree w/your prediction/hope like I would think most of us do.
Sorry kids, but it looks like Kenny might be on his way to England. Oddly enough, it looks like Cardiff is going to cough up the two million pounds I predicted yesterday. Wish it would have been off inside information instead of luck!

I haven’t read any of the responses yet, but this news will keep me from wearing my FCD jearsey in-side-out this weekend.
When I jumped on here I expected to read the Cooper and Toja deal were both done and we would not see them Sunday. At that point point the jersey was going in-side-out for the rest of the season.
I’ll support the MEN and my investment, but if upper management sells both the studs (i’ll admit Toja has lacked, but damn he looked good in the all-star game!) I have a hard time keeping faith there is a plan in place for a cup run in the next 4 years…
Wow Nic…roughly 4 mil. I think is a good transfer fee. I’d sure like to see tomorrow, he’s all we got up top to produce.
Did Kenny get the offer he was promised? Yes. I don’t see anything wrong with that. Sir Alex also tells his players that they shouldn’t leave his team because it will kill their career. That sure was true in Beckham’s case
.
I have just heard that it has been reported in the Cardiff news paper they have now offered 2 million pounds / $4 million dollars for Cooper. Can you imagine if Cooper stays and scores 15 goals in the MLS with FC Dallas, what he will be worth in the next transfer window. ( January ) $$$$$$
Other Alex, Van Nist was a star and a proven player before he went to Man U. Cooper was not before he got hurt. Vastly different.
Also Man U can afford to blow millions on a hurt player, FCD can not.
This is not England.
and if it really is $4mil, Cooper is gone anyway, and would have been gone anyway no matter how much FCD paid him then or now.
And Cooper’s old man has told the Lamar promise contract story many, many times. It’s even appeared in print on this site as well as quite a few others.
Buzz, i am going to challenge you on the promises you talked about. Lamar never ever promised tho old man anything. If you reported it you are wrong. It was Colin Clarke and the front office who made the commitments. Why dont you ask the old man today. From what i know Lamar and Sr talked prior to Coops coming to FC Dallas. Clarke came over and watched 3 games and Coop scored i think 3 goals. Clarke knew how much he was making which i believe was $300 k. Apparently Clarke felt he could get close to that. Upon Jr returning the contract numbers were changed. Why would anybody come back for 80k. At that point they had Coops over a barrel becase the transfer window had closed in England. Cooper Sr has nothing but great respect for the Hunt family. Lamar and Norma have known Sr for 38 years. Do us all a favor Buzz, get this story right for everyones sake.
I’ve talked to Cooper senior many times and every time we’ve talked about the contract situation he’s told me the story he’s told me Lamar promised him they would take care of Kenny. I’ve never heard the story before that it was Clarke that promised he would pay Kenny.
Which doesn’t mean Clarke didn’t, it just means know one has told me that part of the story before.
And if it was Clarke, why are we even talking about it? That was two fired coaches ago. The only reason I had give this promise any weight at all was I thought it came from Lamar.
Buzz, you thought wrong. You get caught up in listening to rumors. Did you ask Cooper Sr tonight about this. I actually did, he looked at me and said sir, it is non of your business. Like you said Buzz ( I thought it came from Lamar ) Sorry you are wrong my friend. Dont worry though, we still love you for all you do in covering this team.
I can only tell you what the man has told me multiple times.
