FC Dallas in Copa Sudamericana?

June 11th, 2008 . By: Chamo Jones

An article in a Honduran newspaper mentions that CONMEBOL is deciding whether to invite Motagua (Honduran team) or FC Dallas to the competition. Fox Sports Televsion is a big player in the decision making process. The rival for the chosen team will be Arsenal (Argentina), the defending champion of the tournament.

Copa Sudamericana was created in 2002 and has been growing in popularity ever since. This years edition kicks off in July, the final takes place in December. CONMEBOL is looking at inviting clubs not involved in the CONCACAF Champions league to avoid scheduling conflicts. All told the competition involves 34 clubs.

Some of the clubs that have already qualified or been invited: Arsenal, Boca, River, Estudiantes, San Lorenzo (Argentina); Sao Paulo, Gremio, Palmeiras, Atlético Mineiro, Botafogo, Vasco da Gama, Internacional, Atlético Paranaense (Brasil); Bolívar, Blooming (Bolivia); Ñublense, Universidad Católica (Chile); Deportivo Cali, América (Colombia); Liga de Quito (Ecuador); Olimpia (Paraguay); Sport Ancash, Universitario (Perú); Aragua, Unión Atlético Maracaibo (Venezuela); Chivas, San Luis (México).

This is the most exciting news surrounding FC Dallas that we have heard all year. Participating in an international tournament is the best way I can think of to jump start the organization. I hope the ownership of the club pulls out all the stops to ensure that they are ones that get invited.

Motagua has the worst fans in CONCACAF history (or the best, if you like bottle and battery-throwing hoodlums). Go with FC Dallas.

How cool would that be! I notice that CAP is involved. Pretty sure it won’t happen, but definitely cool if it did!

Wow, I hate pour cold water on this, but why would they choose FCD over DC, Houston, NE or LA if they’re going to bring in an MLS club?

It says in the article that they are looking for clubs that aren’t going to be participating in the CONCACAF Champions league to avoid scheduling conflicts.
Since the participants for next years CONC Champ league will be determined by this seasons MLS results and US open cup champ, this pretty much shows us what
CONMEBOL thinks about FC Dallas. (Not Much)

    Skeeter,

You are too quick to judge FC Dallas in a negative light in this situation. CONCACAF Champions league kicks off this August using the top 4 teams from last season. FC Dallas had the 5th best record last year. That is why CONMEBOL would want them if they were considering a MLS team.

Ok, then thats great news. I thought this was for next year and they were projecting that Dallas wouldn’t be a player in any of this years competitions. So, not qualifying for SuperLiga may get us into Copa Sudamericana? Sweet!

Hmm, looking at the article again, it says that the Honduran team is IN (and not FCD). So, apparently, it’s already been decided. Oh, well . . .

    Hutchtx,

keep practicing your spanish you are almost there. The article clearly states that the decision has not been made.

Alright, it looks like Motagua has been formally invited. The notion of FCD playing in this tournament was fun while it lasted.
