Catching Up with Schellas Hyndman

June 18th, 2008 . By: Buzz Carrick

I didn’t get out to training Wednesday (I’m shooting for Thursday), but another reporter buddy of mine did and he sent me some quote from Schellas Hyndman.  I figured I might as well post them for everyone to read.  Perhaps we can get an idea about what Schellas is going to be like.

Longwinded I’d say.

On possibly switching to a 4-4-2

I’m just bringing some different ideas. I think the team does some things very well and for me to adjust to the team, I think it may take away my value as a coach. So, what I’m trying to do is implement some changes, some very minor changes. I think it’s important that the team knows how to play with three in the back, which is what they’re doing, but to also be able to play with four in the back. Playing with four in the back, you have some immediate advantages. We have one extra player defending, an extra player to cover the width of the field, 75 yards, each player can cover 18 yards instead of having to cover 18 yards or 25 yards. Now you have different values, overlapping, combination play and flank play. I’m introducing to them some things to think about. It doesn’t mean it will go exactly into that but I think it will make the team better if they have more knowledge how to fluctuate from a three-back system to a four-back system. I think our strength in this team is our central midfielders. I don’t want to lose them, so we will try to play a little bit of a smaller diamond instead of asking them to go all the way to the touch line. I think they feel comfortable with that. The biggest thing for me right now is I want them to understand their roles and their teammates’ roles so that we’re all on the same page.

On whether they will play four in the back this weekend at New York

There is a good chance we will but we have to make sure we have the right personnel. What I’m doing today is making that evaluation. I felt we had a good first practice. It was an energized practice with a lot of activities. There are four stages a team goes through. The forming stage is the first stage and the team was already formed. The team is now trying to make impressions and forming their positions. The team is only getting accustomed to me. The storming stage is the next stage and that is when things are like a storm. Things aren’t very comfortable because they wonder why they aren’t playing, why someone else is playing or why he is going from three backs to four backs. There is a lot of uneasiness. The next stage you get to is the norming stage, where people now understand their roles and accept their positions. They know every game they are starting or are coming off the bench. The last stage is the performing stage and that is when a team is playing 85% or higher to their ability. Some teams never get there because they’re always in the storming stage. What we want to do is go through these stages. Today was a nice introduction, more of a forming stage. Once I come up with a starting lineup, I think we’ll have a storming stage.

On how playing a 4-4-2 will result in better ball distribution from the back and midfield

I think it’s been (an issue) on both sides of the ball. I think a long ball is what FC Dallas has been playing and they have found some success but have been beaten by a long ball. What we’re trying to do is bring some team style and shape into play where they understand their role and their teammates’ role and get people close enough to each other to support each other that it’s not one ball that beats us. Then, when we attack, we want to think about the flank being part of our area that we want to attack in. One of the principles of attack is width. You don’t see a lot of width with this team, do you? You don’t because you’re playing 3-5-2, knocking a lot of through balls, Kenny (Cooper) is running and Dominic (Oduro) is running. If a good defending team can stop that, then they stop you. What we’re trying to do is to find combination play. That’s what I was doing at the end, using combination play, introducing it to only a few players so tomorrow, I can introduce it to a few more because they have to see it to understand it and to get people to move as a group so that when Kenny gets the ball or Dominic gets the ball, he’s not running to goal. Maybe he’s playing it back and spinning or maybe someone else is running. What I said to Kenny today was that he was running too hard on defense. I want you to save some of that energy for the attack. That’s what we’re trying to do.

Well, on a positive note about this hire, which I’ve really been struggling to come up with anything to say, as my posts elsewhere attest, here’s two I do like:
    Four at back (personal preference);
and his 10th Degree Black Belt…at least we won’t be losing any fights with opposing coaches, for damn sure!

Other than that, I still smell several years of Mike Jeffries caliber mediocrity at best. But I’ll be at every game cheering, and watching every road game. As for NY this weekend, whether three in back or four…good luck with 50-67% of our defensive starters out.

    “Forming”, “storming”, “norming”, and “performing”??

Riiiiight. And to think I was nervous about this.

I guess Schellas has read an Organizational Behavior 101 book once upon a time… classic. Bruce Tuckman must be proud.

Whether you are lukewarm or not, you have to like the last quote on the build-up of play and less reliance on the long-ball.

I have been skeptical from the start and remain so. But he is dead on about the attack. I really, really, really hope I am wrong about this guy.

“where people now understand their roles and accept their positions. They know every game they are starting or are coming off the bench.”

This appears to be a philosophical change from Morrow. I don’t think anyone really new their role under him and I had the impression that he did not want them to get comfortable.

He’s certainly saying the right kind of things. I hope he settles for a 3-man for this first game with Drew and Adrian out, and sets out to find more defensive depth during the window. His talk of combination play makes me think that he’s looking to bring in an A-Mid as well.
Looking forward to seeing how this plays out.

Other than the forming storming junk, I like the way he thinks about the game.

The “forming, storming” stuff is straight from someone’s manual on effective teaming . . . when I was teaching M.S., our principal presented the exact same stages to the faculty (because the teachers were grouped in teams). So it’s very much from his background as a SMU “teacher.” I was amused to read that from him . . .

But otherwise, I like, overall, what I’ve read. Maybe, if he follows what he said about it “being about the player,” he really can be a strict but effect coach at the pro level.

[...] Hyndman is… gasp growing on me. Aside from his motivation schmuck (see I am in New York), his comments, collected by a journalist friend (wink, wink) of 3rdDegree’s are really exciting. The 4-4-2 [...]

he seems to have strong belief in his tactics. the way he talks about formations, advantages and plays excite me b/c he actually explained what the purpose of the formations were…unlike morrow just throwing out multiple formations. so far, i’ve liked all the things he has said. now, we’ll find out if what he said got thru to the team vs. NY.

“Norming” is when Cliff and Woody say, “Hey, Norm.”

Actually I’m glad SH has these stages in mind, even if they ARE from a team-building book of some kind.

This match from the Meadowlands is sure gonna be scrutinized!

pingback, Did you probably mean “shtick”?
