FCD Signs Spencer Wadsworth

June 25th, 2008 . 10:59 am . By: Buzz Carrick

Former Duke and New England Revolution midfielder/forward Spencer Wadsworth has accepted an offer from FC Dallas to join their developmental roster.  Wadsworth has been training with the team for about two weeks now and will officially join the team when his paperwork clears the league office.  While this isn’t a revolutionary signing, I consider it a smart piece of business with low risk high reward based on Wadsworth potential and low cost.

Born in Houston, Wadsworth attended Plano West high school and played for the Dallas Texans earning McDonalds All-American and NSCAA All-American awards.  ODP and a Dallas Cup titles in 2003 proceeded his enrollment at Duke.  An All-American in his junior year before being injured and losing most of his senior year, Wadsworth appeared in 86 games with 66 starts scoring 25 goals and adding 34 assists.  Wadsworth had microfracture surgery to repair his injured ankle, his injury filled senior year saw his draft stock drop.

A scrappy hard working player with a nose for goal and ability to hold and distribute the ball up top, Wadsworth was drafted by New England 55th overall in the 4th round of the 2008 SuperDraft.  Wadsworth played four games for the Revs reserve side before being waived to make room for Chris Tierney.

Here’s what I wrote about Wadsworth in our 2008 MLS SuperDraft Pool Forward Rankings where we had him at #9

Has struggled getting back to form since his off season foot surgery, prior to that he would have been top three or four on this list.  Can he recover? A well rounded complete player and he would be ranked much higher if not for an injury.  In 2007 he was recovering from a fairly major injury and only made 6 starts in 20 appearances. But Wadsworth is a seriously talented player and there year starter prior to this season finishing first or second on the Duke team in scoring each season.  In 2006 made the Second Team All-ACC as he tied for first in the NCAA with 14 assists and tied for second on team with eight goals. In 2005 led Duke with nine assists and was third with seven goals.  In 2004 led Duke to the College Cup with eight goals and 10 assists. Leaves duke with 25 goals and 34 assists, but had 23 goals and 33 assists prior to his disrupted senior year.

So, is that it for Ben Shuleva. I know he’s still injured, but wasn’t this roster spot open for him or Yannick Reyering to be signed.

Oh wait, I just saw they had three open spots on the Developmental Roster, my mistake.

Sonny – I bet with his college coach now in charge he has a better shot unless he doesn’t believe in him at all. The only reason Morrow drafted him was his red card in the playoffs.
