Match Report: FC Dallas at New York Red Bulls

June 22nd, 2008 . 9:14 am . By: John Carlton

The first game of the Schellas Hyndman era ended in a shutout loss for FC Dallas Saturday evening at Giants Stadium against Red Bull New York.  The defeat continued the Red Stripes’ futility on the road this season, giving them a 1-4-2 mark away from Pizza Hut Park.  For Hyndman, it was a less than impressive christening of his MLS coaching career.

The new Dallas coach had talked during the week about possibly changing the three-man backline the Hoops had used all season to a more conventional four-man scheme at the back.  And despite missing two starters from the normal three-man defense, Drew Moor and Adrian Serioux being unavailable due to national team duty, Hyndman stayed true to his word and employed four men in front of ‘keeper Dario Sala.  Hyndman started Blake Wagner at left back and Bobby Rhine at right back, with Duilio Davino and Aaron Pitchkolan as center backs.  The midfield assumed a four man diamond formation with Andre Rocha and Marcelo Saragosa on the wings, Pablo Richetti as the holding midfielder and Juan Toja in the attacking midfield position.  Kenny Cooper and Dominic Oduro formed the strike partnership up top.

Hyndman’s change of formation did little to help the team keep possession.  Throughout the match, FCD struggled to link passes through the midfield.  Unlike last week’s match against Chicago Fire, the Hoops displayed very little patience when going forward.  Part of Hyndman’s rationale for switching to the four-man back line, as he told the media this week, was to lessen the ground that each defender had to cover.  So it was perhaps a little ironic that Goldthwaite’s goal came as he was barely marked at the back post on a corner kick.

As for FCD’s goal scoring opportunities, there weren’t a lot.  Oduro had a clean shot in the six-yard box in the 19th minute, but scuffed the synthetic turf instead.  The best chance came in the 68th minute as Andre Rocha got loose on a breakaway in the penalty area and rifled a shot from about 15 yards out.  Conway made his only real save of the night to keep the clean sheet.  On the other end, Dario Sala had to make six saves on the evening, a couple which were spectacular.

Red Bull New York put in yeoman’s work to get the win and keep themselves in the thick of things in the Eastern Conference.  For Hyndman and the Hoops, it was a frustrating loss that made for an inauspicious debut of a new coach and a new philosophy.  The good news for the players, if they choose to view it as such, is that they now have a coach and a philosophy.

Forming, Storming, Norming, Underperforming…my ass! I understand it’s the new coaches’ first game. Nonetheless, we’re playing a mediocre team (admittedly on a gruesome concrete NFL field) that was missing their top three players, and lost another key one at the 20th minute.

Yes, Sala looked completely out of position on the goal, but he did make several great saves to avoid us an embarrassing blowout. Pitch looked a day late, a dollar short, and a step behind as he often does on the goal. As for our offense…not so much either.

This team always looks horrible playing on concrete. I’ll wait until the next game to decide.

4 total shots, 2 on goal, and 2 corners! That is the definition of an impotent offense. Perhaps Viagra would be interested in a shirt sponsorship deal?
