Abdus Ibrahim Traded to Toronto
June 13th, 2008 . 8:49 pm . By: Buzz CarrickAfter a long sabbatical away from FC Dallas, Abdus Ibrahim has been traded to Toronto FC for a conditional draft pick. If Ibrahim plays 10 or more games in 2009, or if he is sold, loaned, or traded, then FCD will receive a 2010 first round pick. If none of the previous conditions are met, then FCD will receive a 2nd round pick. Ibrahim had a strong spring for FCD and was really starting to show some talent before his sabbatical. As we had previously reported, Ibrahim was on indefinite leave of absence from FCD for “personal business.” Our sources indicated Ibrahim had left FCD to deal with some kind of family issue. As a general rule we at 3rd Degree try not to pry to deeply into players’ off field business, so we didn’t investigate further what his specific situation was. Our sources did however indicate that Ibrahim’s situation was bad enough the young man had considered quitting soccer completely and FCD talked him into taking the sabbatical instead. Now FCD has traded Ibrahim to Toronto, the MLS team closest to where the young man needs to be at this time for his family. We applaud FC Dallas and Toronto FC’s willingness to send Ibrahim to be closer to his family and perhaps be able to continue his career, particularly since we are talking about a 17 year old kid who’s decision making may not be as wise as a more mature player. There are times when family should take precedence and in our estimation both clubs have risen above pure competitiveness by helping the young man while swapping some kind of fair return for his rights. One can only hope for the best for a young player and his family. Ibrahim still has immense upside and hopefully a long career to come. Here’s the FCD Press release on the trade. FCD ACQUIRES DRAFT PICK FROM TORONTO IN EXCHANGE FOR IBRAHIMFC Dallas General Manager Michael Hitchcock announced today that forward Abdus Ibrahim has been traded to Toronto FC in exchange for a conditional selection in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. FC Dallas will acquire Toronto’s natural first round selection in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft if: Ibrahim plays in 10 or more 2009 MLS regular season games, or, if he is sold or loaned, or, if he is traded to another MLS team before the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. If none of the conditions above are met, Dallas will receive Toronto’s natural second round selection in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. In addition, Dallas will receive 50 percent of any transfer fee if Ibrahim is transferred from an MLS club to one overseas. The 16-year old Ibrahim was selected by FC Dallas in the 2nd Round (14th overall) of the 2007 MLS SuperDraft. The selection had been acquired from Toronto in September 2006 along with Adrian Serioux in exchange for midfielder Ronnie O’Brien. Ibrahim was ineligible to be on FCD’s 28-man roster during the 2007 season, as he remained with the U.S. Residency Program in Bradenton, Florida to finish school and be part of the U.S. U-17 National team that participated in the 2007 U-17 FIFA World Cup in South Korea. Over the past two seasons, Ibrahim has appeared in four Reserve Division games, scoring one goal. 12 Comments Comments RSS TrackBack Identifier URI Leave a comment |

wow, i hope he ends up being ok but this does nothing but screw FCD. That kid was very highly thought of and i dont see a 1st rounder as remotely fair compensation. Spend 3 years developing a kid and have this happen. its a setback…
3 years? I don’t think he trained with the team for more than 6 months.
He was picked in the second round and we got at least a second rounder for him plus half of anything he could sell for in the future.
FC Dallas makes no sense. We shake up our lineup way too much, our staff is never consistent, we always get screwed in the playoffs. when all that is wrong it only points to the ownership.
I wish the best for him. This wouldn’t have happened if it didn’t have to.
that’s my early morning thoughts.
I understand that this is a special situation here and I applaud the organization on trying to do the right thing, but are we on a Texas Rangers style 10 year rebuilding plan here? When is the last time that we actually traded a player and received a real live player in return? When I see traded for draft picks or allocation, I hear, maybe we’ll be competitive next year or the year after.
If Ibrahim sticks with it, he is going to be a fantastic player. Ye is still very young, and is developing into a very good young player.
ONCE AGAIN…. A TRADE FOR NOTHING…. HERE WE GO AGAIN!
Burn Fan, shut up. There’s more at stake here than a regular trade. FCD should be applauded for finding a way to allow this talented kid to remain in the sport while being close enough to his family to deal with the issues there.
I don’t get the backlash on this one. He hadn’t done anything on the senior team, he had personal issues, and he was a second rounder himself. What’s wrong with getting at least a second rounder, and freeing up a roster spot in that situation?
Skeeter, most of the trades in this league involve draft picks and allocations. Do you honestly think FCD could have gotten an immediately useful live player for Ibrahim?
I’m ecstatic that FCD has tons of cap space and 2 roster spots heading into the transfer window now. If they haven’t taken advantage two months from now I will not be pleased. Now, if only Saragosa green card would get finalized…
Its because this has become the norm for FCD. If this was the first move it would be different, but we are always rebuilding
Yes, Right on Nate!
Just like the LA Galaxy debacle wasn’t the lone reason for Morrow’s firing, it came after a pattern of pathetic play had been established in the two weeks prior, this is just another in a pattern of pathetic transactions. Did the team do the right thing for the kid here? Probably so, but they have already used up their mulligans as far as I am concerned and I am ready for them to do the right thing for the organization and the fans.
Steve,
Dude, you are totally right about the roster flexibility that the organization has to make moves. I hope that they do make moves to strengthen the roster (and if they do and the teams still stinks, they will have my full support). I just think the only thing we are going to get from the FO at the close of the transfer window is more excuses. I hope I’m wrong.
Nate and Skeeter,
I absolutely understand why you’re frustrated, but, to my mind, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with this particular move. In fact, looking at all of the (roster) moves of the last year independently, they all seem well justified:
selling Gbandi – They actually got someone to pay money for Chris Gbandi. He has yet to play a game for his new team.
Let Goodson get expansion drafted – They cut their losses exactly when they should have. It would be fiscally irresponsible in a salary cap league to stick it out and get into a bidding war with any team in Europe. I liked Goodson a lot, but he had his brainless moments as well, and you can’t break the bank on a player like that.
The Ruiz trade – I’m biased because I had been hoping they’d unload him from the moment I became a fan of this team. Addition by subtraction at its simplest. He is lazy, overpayed, injury-prone at this point of his career, and his absence has allowed Cooper and Oduro to rise to the occassion.
They definitely faltered hugely in not bringing in more players to add attacking power and defensive depth in the offseason, though. I hope they redeem that in the current window, but firing Morrow, and show that this is an unstable organization in the way that the coach search went down could cause doubts for prospective players. If the can turn the transfer momentum around, though, it could get very nice very fast, with the cap and roster flexibility they have now.
