Cotton Bowl Renovations
June 11th, 2008 . 8:24 am . By: Buzz CarrickIt’s been a while since the Cotton Bowl was home to FC Dallas, aka Dallas Burn. But I figured some of you might be interested in the what could have been if FCD had stayed there, given of course that Hunt’s buying and moving the team is the only thing that kept it from being folded instead of Tampa. The Cotton Bowl is currently undergoing renovation to keep from losing the UT/OU game to the new Cowboys stadium and they looks quite impressive. Someday perhaps FCD will gain need a stadium that can hold over 25k. We can all dream right? Side note: I couldn’t be more excited to get the A&M – Arkansas rivalry going again and have it in the Metroplex. Anyway, There are lots of places you can read about the Cotton Bowl and what’s going on there and the political maneuvers that got it renovated so I won’t go into that here. What I will mention is that the CB will now be a complete bowl. A friend of mine sent me this pictures and images of the renovations and I figured I might as well share them. If I did this right you should be able to click each image for much larger versions. 12 Comments Comments RSS TrackBack Identifier URI Leave a comment |

Very nice.
Too little too late. UT/OU is the only thing left, the CB has bolted, the new A&M/Pig series, ND is playing in the new Jerry stadium, etc., etc. With the increased capacity (and hopefully more and new restrooms and concessions) hopefully the UT/OU game will stay (this from an A&M fan who just think’s its a great event).
However, this comes much too late, if it had been done earlier perhaps A&M/Pig would be there, if it incorporated suites the Cotton Bowl game could still be there.
The one thing this is great for – potential big soccer friendlies, exhibitions, and even major tournaments like Gold Cup and the World Cup (who will not want to play on a plastic rug – only Jerry could be so stupid as to build a $1 billion stadium and put in a plastic rug).
They really should have put in a stage in the Cotton Bowl!
Other comment – everyone laughed at the “Cotton Dome” committee back in the 90s, actually they had a lot of foresight and had Dallas listened to them and invested $$ back then, think what Dallas could have –
Cowboys, UT/OU, A&M/Ark./ Cotton Bowl bowl game, Final 4, World Cup games, etc., etc., etc.
Now they will have a very good stadium – with one real game per year and some h.s. playoff games.
But that is par for the course in Dallas, totally screwed up politics and city management, everyone asking what they get out of it and not doing what is best for the city.
it will be gone too. way too little, way too late.
I agree with ya JPB4.
While it would’ve made me a bit ill to see the City of Dallas and Dallas County do a big-money deal with Jerry Jones to build the Cowboys’ new stadium at Fair Park, I can’t say that the alternative is looking to be all that great, where the Cotton Bowl is becoming a white elephant that is home to TX/OU and A&M/Pig and not much else.
At this point, it looks as if the best option would’ve been to completely redo the place similar to the “Cotton Dome” proposal that was floated 10 years ago, but instead, what we’re getting is the half-measure of the current renovations.
I wonder what 8,000 fans would look like in that.
What about the new improvements at Dragon Stadium?
haha!
Hmmmm…. Maybe we could have a “real” Dallas MLS team play there… L.A. has two teams…. America (mexican team) USA anyone?
A&M/Pig is at Jerry World. Dallas needs to continue to look for other big games to be played at the newly improved/expanded CB to recoup the investment. They should also talk to SMU and UNT about scheduling games with A&M and UT at the CB (A&M and UT would require 2 in C.S./Austin, and the return “road” game could be at the CB). They should also try to get US MNT World-Cup Qualifiers, and big soccer friendlies (like USA/Argentina). Lastly, they should make a move to have DISD schools play football games there – one Friday night, DH on saturday.
It can still be a valuable asset to the city, but they have to be aggressive. If it just sits there and only hosts UT/OU (and Prarie View/Grambling) during the state fair, and some h.s. playoff games, etc., it will be a total waste of $50 mill.
This could have been Dallas’ Soldier Field but the past is in the past…
