Trouble in a Nut Shell
May 21st, 2008 . By: Buzz CarrickSteve Davis sums up the entire mess in a suscint and articaulate manner. Damn you Steve, just when I think I’m starting to get good at this you put out material like that. Damn you, sir. 9 Comments Comments RSS TrackBack Identifier URI Leave a comment |

Excellent read, thanks for bringing it to our attention. I’m feeling worse and worse about what has transpired by the moment.
Total knee jerk. I was not a huge SM fan, but firing a guy with a .500 record and the youngest team in MLS is just wrong.
You can bet I’ll think long and hard about shelling out for season tickets next year. This is a rudderless organization whose hype I no longer buy into.
Can’t say it any better than this. And he’s right about the on the field stuff too.
” FC Dallas remains overly tethered to domestic soccer’s old marketing models, the tired pursuit of suburban families. Problem is, too many of those customers care only marginally about W’s and L’s. They’re pretty happy with a couple of visits a year, so long as they can get in and out of concession lines in timely fashion (which they can’t at Pizza Hut Park), and so long as the club has an effective traffic egress plan that moves them smoothly from the parking lots (which it doesn’t).
Competitive success only partially defines the attendance calculus. Customer service is imperative, too, and complaints tumble from Pizza Hut Park like streamers from the stands in Toronto. “
My first thoughts, reading blogs with FCD fans calling for Morrow’s head, was “what a knee jerk reaction.” Dallas had bonafied chances in the first 20 minutes of the game and had the youngster lads finished, the game would have had a very different result, on many levels. Hitch seemed to be reading the blogs…..he had the same knee jerk reaction and in the end, may have wrecked the team he was trying to save. HSG, establish your priorities, get a savy coach then dump Hitch!! His futbol wisdom is imparied. Otherwise, I feel I am wasting my season tickets on a struggling franchise.
Anybody else wondering why EVERYONE has noticed the same exact complaints and have been saying them on this board for years. What does it take to FCD to see this and do something about it?
Answer: maybe an embarrasing editorial on ESPN, the mother of all sports networks.
Brilliantly stated. Well done, Steve.
When all of this first went down, I said to someone that I wasn’t sure how I felt about Morrow having been sacked. But I did know something didn’t feel right, and now having a few more days to think about it, I’ve definitely got a better idea. And it couldn’t have been better summarized than what was written here.
I wonder how Clark, Dan, and Hitch would feel if all of us printed a copy of Steve’s article, wrote “WHAT HE SAID” in big letters, signed it and mailed it to each of them. Wonder if they would get the point. OK, I doubt they would, but it’s an idea…
While I agree with most of Steve Davis’ points, I am seemingly one of the few who favored this move, at least in part. But I think they should have moved Morrow to Technical Director, since I think he has a good eye for talent, and brought in a Latin coach.
I hate to state the obvious but in pro sports you take this sort of thing as necessary. A coach is a material part of your success and if you lose confidence in the coach he needs to go.
i applaud FCD for making a tough call. Knee jerk? maybe, but you could have made a better case for keeping Colin Clark who had done well here (and was one PK away from getting out of the first round).
The team is young and taking on water and Morrow had massive conflict with a new assistant fired within the last 10 days. Anybody think that maybe the front office had seen enough? If you are high maintenance then you had better be high performance. If you are high maintenance and then get crushed on national TV…you might think about finding another gig.
PS dont cry too long, his contract keeps him in dough for another 1.5 years right?
love marco’s idea…. would be even better to make a cute little poster at the new “fan zone” - you know, the one they put smack in the middle of the Gold Parking lot that people have the option of paying extra for……
