HSG Set to Hire Hyndman

SMU coach to take on dual role with FC Dallas.

May 31st, 2008 . By: Buzz Carrick

According to multiple 3rd Degree sources, Hunt Sports Group is about to hire SMU head coach Schellas Hyndman as both head coach and technical director for FC Dallas.  After having offered the FCD/Burn coaching job to Hyndman on three previous occasions, only to have him turn it down each time, the Hunts appear to have finally gotten their man by offering the authority and income Hyndman desired with the multiple positions.

The Hunts had originally held discussions with Hyndman this winter about becoming the technical director for FC Dallas and were in effect holding the position open for him until such time as he was ready to come on board.  Most close observers of the franchise believed it likely to be after this coming college season that Hyndman would take the TD reigns at FCD.  But FCD General Manager Michael Hitckcock’s move last week to dump head coach Steve Morrow gave the Hunts the window to approach Hyndman about taking both positions and the prize of the combined roles has apparently tempted Hyndman to take the leap from his tower of security on the Hilltop.

Our sources indicate that while Hitchcock has been conducting his coaching search this week, the Hunts informed their GM they were talking to their own candidate.  Yet talks with Hyndman apparently did not progress enough to tell Hitchcock to cease interviewing coaching candidates, as such various names and candidates have been emerging in local media.  Hitchcock is under immense pressure from HSG to sell tickets and was on a short leash with the Hunts this season to begin with Now it appears the Hunts have chosen to move away from the GM’s path and take a direction of their own choosing.

Despite the fact Hyndman’s name first surfaced from our sources on Wednesday, as of yet it appears no contract has yet been signed between HSG, FCD, and Hyndman.  The same sources now indicate the hire could come within the next few days.  Impacting the deal might be Hyndman’s SMU soccer camps, currently scheduled for June and July, that play such a pivotal role in college coach income and how said camps might, or might not, carry on with FC Dallas.

As technical director Hyndman would take over all operations of a player personnel nature for the 28-man professional roster, as well as operation of the FC Dallas Juniors program, while also running the first team and reserve sides as head coach.  It may take some time before we learn how the dual role will shake out in terms of day-to-day operations of the club.

Stay tuned as the story develops.

Why would Schellus do this? i dont understand. There are so many other things out there for him with the camps, a Top 5 ranking coming up, and 15 dominant new freshman to go with Bruno and the MLS-ready Mustangs that he’s probably taking a step down to coach FCD. i dont understand if this is true.

This is like Coach K leaving Duke to coach the Knicks.

As much as I’ve disagreed with some of Hitch’s decisions in the past, the owners pulling rank on him like this puts a bad taste in my mouth. I also may be biased, because I figured that the TD and coach would be distinct positions, and that someone with professional experience would be filling at least one of them.

Wouldn’t it be physically impossible for one person to do all that listed above and do it well?

Man, if this comes to pass, it will simply seal it that FCD/HSG is broken and clueless.

Hey, at least the team will be consistent. Build up expectations and then crush everyone by choking in the playoffs.

    Awesome.

HSG seemingly has gotten tired of shooting their feet and now have pulled the trigger right at the brainpan.

  7. Comment by Quills on May 31, 2008 6:03 am

Hopefully he decides during this first year that he doesn’t like coaching pro players and focuses on being the Technical Director (which would allow him more time to control the Juniors) and finds his own coach in the offseason.

This will be complete horseshit!!HSG saved this team when they bought it?? What the hell did they save it for??This friggin mess??

Once again Amateurs. Not for the hire as Hyndman has skins on the wall and could prove to be an asset, but in the way this organization is operated. I would be very dissapointed if what Buzz describes above actually proves to be correct.
    Buzz,
No offense, but I hope that you are wrong.

“Hitchcock is under immense pressure from HSG to sell tickets”

How is Hyndman going to help ticket sales. I consider myself a fairly educated fan of the game, but I don’t follow College sports at all. If I were not a regular reader of 3rd Degree I would have no clue who this guy even is.

I am sure that he will be fantastic when it comes to scouting young players for the MLS draft, but where is he on current pro scouting? The transfer window is nigh upon us and this team needs a defender, attacking midfielder, and could probably use another striker, is he going to be ready to address these problems?

  12. Comment by Rich on May 31, 2008 6:08 am

If HSG has actually bypassed Hitch in the coach hiring process, it just makes me wonder when the search for a new GM will begin. If Buzz is correct (and he usually is about these things), I would suspect Hitch more than a little pissed by HSG’s interference in the standard process. I would not be surprised if he were to simply resign over it.

Good luck FCD FO. As long as HSG is in charge of things, you will spend most of your time bailing water out of your sinking ship.

Unless your name is Alex Ferguson, you get hired as a pro coach knowing that you’ll get fired (and even Sir Alex has been sacked once). It’s the very nature of the business. So why anyone would leave a job for life for something where they are likely to be gone in 3-5 years (if they are lucky) makes no sense to me.
Plus there’s a huge difference in working with college students to a pro environment.
    If it’s true, it’s a bad move.

  14. Comment by Frapp on May 31, 2008 6:59 am

Now it makes sense why they fired Morrow so quickly. Hyndman must have told HSG he would take the job. Looks like they were just waiting for the first big loss. I bet Morrow feels more betrayed than ever by his former best-buddy Hitchcock. Personally, I feel like this is a big mistake. A college coach coaching a professional team, one that includes a lot of foreign players? I smell disaster.

  15. Comment by Buzz Carrick on May 31, 2008 7:02 am

Balonpie, none taken. Certainly I am not infallible but my sources are pretty good on this one. And frankly with the dual role thing I to hope I am wrong.

Skeeter, no idea actually. The only coach that would sell any tickets would be Hugo and he wouldn’t sell all that many.

  16. Comment by Buzz Carrick on May 31, 2008 7:04 am

Bacon and others, hopefully the long term goal is to have Hyndman become just the TD and have him hire another coach down the line. Hopefully.

  17. Comment by Pony2 on May 31, 2008 7:06 am

sounds kind of odd, but they wanted SH before and so it is not a surprise to go after him now. I think they will work out the TD/HC conflict by bringing someone else on for 1 of these positions later.

Like seemingly everyone else, I don’t like this move at all, if it comes to pass.

In my opinion, SMU teams are always talented (good recruiting) but ultimately fall short because they lack tactical sophistication and grit. Bringing in the mastermind of that outfit will not solve FCD’s main problem: it is in a rebuilding phase and is stocked with young, talented players that in large lack tactical sophistication and grit. Add to that the fact that the game in the MLS has bypassed almost all of our college coaches, except maybe a few (of which Schellas is not one), and this move spells trouble.

This will be an umitigated disaster.

By the way, an MLS TD does not need to be good at scouting college players. Everyone in the college world knows, for the most part, who the top college players are each year. A TD needs connections to foriegn players/leagues so he can find foreigners to come in with a good attitude and make a difference. In a league that is specifically designed to foster competitive parity, the ability to find good foreigners is what makes certain franchises better year in and year out (e.g., NE, DC). Does Schellas offer anything in that regard?

Someone help me. An NCAA coach with no real depth at professional FIFA structured football is going to be the head.

Recruiting, training, tactics, culture - all are out of his depth…

    this is pathetic

Hopefully none of those posting their comments are part of the trekkie group that calls itself a fan club, b/c the dynamo crowd clearly showed passion which though not directly linked to knowledge of the game, is an excellent place to start. Our ‘going home in a Frisco Ambulance’ group, while devoted, I would say they need to try to emulate the atmosphere created by almost any visiting fans, houston in particular.

Regarding Schellas taking over, why would many consider him worthwhile as a TD, but not as a coach? Looking at the options available, it will be interesting to see.

Let MF finish the season, if successful, great, if not, let Schellas step in with his knowledge.

  29. Comment by elnumero8 on May 31, 2008 1:05 pm

HSG is starting to seem like Hicks w/ his teams. Crap games to watch, but ask for more and more money from the fans for less and less quality product.

  30. Comment by Futbol1 on May 31, 2008 1:10 pm

Maybe this is what fc dallas needs. Shellas may not be completely equipped to handle a professional team, especially in his first year. The style of play that Hyndman tries to incorporate may work well with the technical 4-4-2 possession game that Dallas has the ability to play.

  31. Comment by twotone on May 31, 2008 1:26 pm

I have a question: Isnt the combined TD/HC position what every coach in FCD history has done since its inception? I mean, there has never been a real GM and the coach has been charged with using his connections and other scouts/agents to find foreign players. In fact, SM has probably been one of the better ones at finding foreign players when given the opportunity.

    Dir
    Morrow
Jeffries (ROB, Morrow, Chivas Martinez, T-Bone)
Clarke (can i blame Nklecko on him?)

  32. Comment by Cai on May 31, 2008 1:57 pm

Peter Welpton said it perfectly for me…I cannot add a thing to that.

  33. Comment by Sully on May 31, 2008 2:07 pm

Twotone…Which foreign players has Steve Morrow found? Everyone at FCD knows that Steve Morrow made plenty of trips across the pond to “recruit” - and who has he brought back from Europe? Pareja found Toja, Sala found Ricchetti, CAP loaned us Ricardinho and Rocha. Morrow even blamed Hitchcock for the Denilson fiasco. For me Steve Morrow will always be the guy who traded ROB for an injured Serioux and Carlos Ruiz for basically nothing. I know Schellas Hyndman can’t possibly make worse decisions than Morrow did.

  34. Comment by twotone on May 31, 2008 2:44 pm

i was just going off the players that were brought in during the head coaches tenure. in your case, can we blame Mike Jeffries for Percy Olivares, since Armando Palaez brought him in?

  35. Comment by fishon on May 31, 2008 2:48 pm

New AD at SMU is a turd cutter. He is probably telling Coach Hyman who to recruit. Great op for the coach. More money, no NCAA hassles, coach everyday. Who cares if he gets fired 2-3 years from now. He has cabbage. NCAA and bad AD’s wear thin on coaches that have been in it for awhile.

  36. Comment by Andrew S. on May 31, 2008 2:57 pm

The only good thing if Hyndman gets the job is that we won’t have to hear about him interviewing for the job every year. Dallas might as well let him fail now so we don’t have to deal with him any longer.

  39. Comment by Scott on May 31, 2008 6:07 pm

yeah a lot of people are overlooking that Arena was a college coach first. Granted he won titles in the college game, but it’s been done.

  40. Comment by 3nOut on May 31, 2008 9:00 pm

i don’t understand why some are upset that HSG has made the move to interview schellas and have practically disregarded hitch. just a few days ago, many showed their lack of faith in hitch and his ability to hire a new coach. now that HSG has done it for him, we’re upset that they bypassed him?

i, for one, am glad HSG finally decided to show up and take a hold of the situation.

as far as scchellas as coach, i don’t know too much about his tactics. all i know is that he’s helped SMU become a power in the college socccer scene. as twotone mentioned in the first comment…it’s like coach K going to the knicks. well, how many coach K’s are there?

It’s pretty obvious - Clark Hunt played at SMU during Hyndman’s first two years.
