Final 4-4-2

What a joy it was for me, a devout disciple of the 4-4-2, to see it used in the European Cup Final by Manchester United. I still believe when played right it’s the best formation we have in the modern game and Man U uses it with such balance and to terrific effect.

  • Two big rangy center backs.
  • Two strong defending outside backs who can both get to the end and cross as well as play in combination.
  • One deep holding midfielder who can win balls and pass superbly.
  • One linking midfielder who is terrific on the ball, a wonderful passer, gets into the box, and a great long range shooter.
  • Two wide wingers who can play possession, get to the end and cross, and cut into the box on a devastating diagonal run. (Although let’s be fair Cristiano Ronaldo is far better than Owen Hargreaves)
  • And two dynamic and energetic strikers who harass the tar out of defenders.

Breathtaking and regardless of the outcome (I wrote this in the second half) it doesn’t change the fact Man U plays a beautiful game under one of the great coaches of all time.
