120 Fahrenheit: Coaching Candidates
May 20th, 2008 . 2:19 pm . By: Buzz Carrick
We’ll obviously FC Dallas has a coaching opening. So let’s survey the field of candidates and put them in some semblance of an order that they are most likely. I’m gonna add two at the bottom I would like to see interviewed that I bet won’t be. Probable CandidatesSchellas Hyndman – The Owner Favorite: Offered the job on three previous occasions and keeps turning it down. Always has great talent at SMU, never wins the big one. Would his tough guy persona go over with pro players? If he’ll take the job it’s his to have. Did he finally say yes and is that the reason Morrow is out? The one thing that makes me think it’s not him this time is the team he has at SMU this year may be his best shot yet at a title. Our sources say the FCD Technical Director job is sitting open waiting for him when he wants it, perhaps after this next NCAA season. Oscar Pareja – The Fan Favorite: Mister FCD and the player every fans wants to coach. Withdrew his name from the pool last time as he felt he wasn’t experienced enough. Knows these players and is respected by them, and everyone else in MLS for that matter. Class player, class guy, tons of heart, and is honest and open. Left for the U17 opportunity and because he wasn’t on the same page as Morrow. Is he still to close to what is happening now having played for Clarke and coached with Morrow? Is that a clean enough break? This is the coach they can afford and who would take the job. Did his leaving burn any bridges? Hugo Sanchez – Mexico’s Ex: Former FC Dallas player with an international reputation and name. He certainly would be a drastic change and is currently available. Has had success coaching Mexican clubs and the Mexican National side apart from not beating the USA. Would cost a bunch more cash than Dallas has ever spent on a coach. If you want to make a splash and sell some tickets, then this is your guy. Dave Dir – Former Dallas Burn Coach: He’s been around this town for some time as well as working for the US as an assistant coach to Thomas Rongen. He certainly know the team and the franchise since he’s been doing color TV commentary. Had a five year run as the Dallas Burn head man under Billy Hicks and then Andy Swift. He played a style conducive to Texas, used a fair number of Hispanic players including the best name in franchise lore, and took the team deeper than any other coach into the playoffs. Yet why has he never been a coaching candidate anywhere else? Richie Williams – Former MLS Player: A Bruce Arena disciple, they tend to get hired a lot. A candidate the last time this job was open. He’s been an assistant coach a while in New York and has led a MLS team as an interim coach. Tough as heck player with game smarts, that’s the kid of player who usually makes a good coach. Might not be well known to younger players, but would be bring a tough as heck mentality to any team. Bruce Arena – The Boss: Yes he just said he wants to come back to MLS. But FCD is one of the lowest paying head coaching jobs in MLS and Bruce is not a fan of the Lone Star State so don’t get your hopes up. Didn’t do all that well toward the end of the US job and with the Red Bulls but is still respected in the soccer world. Would certainly commend the players attention with his no-nonsense in your face approach. Jeff Agoos – The Prodigal Son: Won a ton of rings as a player in MLS and a vast number of caps with the US team. Currently has a job with the Red Bulls as their sporting director. A native Texan would he be interested in returning home? Does he have an interest in coaching? Probably doesn’t know very much about the FCD current team, which may or may not be a good thing. Marco Ferruzzi – The One You Know: Four years experience as an assistant coach. Knows this team and it’s players. Has played in MLS and USL-1 and joined Colin Clarke’s staff after having played for Clarke in USL. Would HSG go to a current assistant for the third straight time. Speaks Italian and some Spanish. San Antonio native. Buzz’s Bonus CandidatesHere’s two names I’d like to see on the list that likely won’t be. Jay Vidovich – Wake Forest Head Coach: The current national champs head coach, but it’s not so much the winning that impresses it’s the fact his college teams are some of the most advanced tactically I’ve ever seen. Wake players have fantastic grounding in the basic play of the game and can operate at a MLS tactical level very quickly. Probably makes more at Wake than he would with FCD. Would he give that up for less job security to coach at a higher level? Tim Vom Steeg – UC Santa Barbara Head Coach: Won a title at a small school and one that can only be described as hard to recruit for. Twice National Coach of the Year. Has a reputation for finding diamonds in the rough and turning them into solid players with teams that are greater than the sum of their parts. Again he has a ton of security at UCSB would he accept the challenge? So there’s a short list. We’ll let you know if and when we hear of actual interviews. Who did we leave off and who do you want to get the job? 27 Comments Comments RSS TrackBack Identifier URI Leave a comment |

Former Player and fan favorite Kevin Keegan (King Kev) came in to save Newcastle united this season. Can Oscar Pareja save the Hoops?
OR
Is Marco Ferruzzi the second comming of Avram Grant?
Is say bring on King Osc!!!
[...] until things change, its now time to look and see who will coach this club. Buzz already has a solid list of coaches that could fill the [...]
wow love this list
José Mourinho is looking for a job
All the same names as last time!! Why was Morrow hired in the first place?
If Pareja will come then we are lucky to get him. He is the hands-down best of that group.
Dir is an interesting choice as well. I wonder what he would do if given a second cut at it.
maybe CAP can loan us one of their coaches for the meantime, and we can loan them hitch. besides, hitch looks like he could use some sun.
i like the list…just for the simple fact that morrow isn’t on there. w/ HSG, they’re gonna have to love the job b/c they’re not gonna get paid. would it be akward to re-hire jorge alvial in some capacity? maybe he’s still around town cleaning out his apt.
OMG! If they hire Sanchez, we’ll never win another game ever, except for the away-leg of the rio Grande Plate!!
One of the reasons it seems like its a lot of the same names is that HSG tends to stay “in the family.” Sigi was a rare example of them going outside their house.
As we learn of names that aren’t on our list we’ll be sure and update everyone. For now these are our best guess at some names that might be available and willing to come to FCD.
I would really like to see Vidovich as the head coach. Watching Wake Forest was more enjoyable than watching most MLS teams. With the players FC Dallas has it seems the team should be able to move the ball much better than they currently do.
One person I really hope does not get the job would be Hyndman. The players he gets at SMU should be in the final 4 or 8 every year yet they always choke. Plus, many of the players I have known that have played at SMU do not like him.
However, I think Pareja would be good for the job. He knows the team and looks to have a passion and spark that has been missing from FCD so far.
Put me down for Oscar or Dir. I’d also take Arena, but HSG would never pay for him.
I think we need a guy who knows offensive strategy inside and out, and to me that would be Sanchez, Pareja, Vidovich. No way we should select the Goose, please, God, no!
I also think Dir would be a good TD. This team needs a truly excellent TD to get out of this damn rut and to help us structure contracts properly.
smu had it best team a couple of seasons ago when they got upset in the first round against national champs UCSB.i think schellas would be a good hire but SMU is a dream job.
The best coach would be a south american coach. Maybe an Argentinian or even a Brazilian(Rene Simoes). I would also throw for Jurgen Klisman. But it all depends on how much money FC is willing to pay. But I believe good coaches bring in good players so its a very importat spot to be filled.
Also with Schellas coming he would prob try to sign Bruno on the draft which I think can contribute to the team, however I dont see him as a Coach but as the director next year. And as Buzz said he has one of the best group on SMU this year.
oh, and please dont bring Arena. He didnt do **** with the Red Bulls
It’s John Harkes job if he wants it. Remember I said it.
screw south american coach! go get european coach like an ass. coach 2 n the england or klinsman!
Spencer in houston?
methinks Dave Dir is very comfortable right now also with his job as gk coach for the Young Nats, Technical Director for ASG in Dallas, and as an analyst for the home team. he likes those spots and they are all pretty safe right now. Just like Schellus, why would he give all of that up for the high-risk FCD spot?
How about we use that deal with the TnT league and bring in a coach from there……..(tongue firmly in cheek)?
Carlos Alberto Pareira is out there too.
OSCAR
Ferruzzi is the man. Has both expericence with the FC Dallas Orginization and is always the go to guy for players.
Buzz, Vom Steeg would be a great selection. Don’t think you can get’m out of Santa Barbara. Talk is he’ll be the next A.D. @UCSB.
But that’s the “Out of the box” thinking your F.O. needs
Could Dave Sarachan be a candidate?
May be we should ask old man Cooper about some of the candidates listed. Sarachan, Smith and Ferruzzi all played for him.
Bring Didier Deschamps
Oscar Pareja it´s the best.
