DC Hits on Jersey Sponsorship

May 11th, 2008 . 3:37 pm . By: Buzz Carrick

Watching DC play the last few games I have been overwhelmed with one thought. No, not that they are crap. But rather that once again DC United got it right when it came to something involving their branding and image, this time it’s the jersey sponsorship. They already had the best uniform in MLS, then they did the triple, as it were, of hitting on the major points of selling the front of the jersey.

1. They landed a big, world wide brand that has money, clout, and a strong image. In their case Volkswagen, a brand we’ve seen before with Wolfsburg in Germany. Real Salt Lake’s XanGo comes to mind as a company I’m not so confident about in comparison.

2. A company with a simple, clean, and recognizable logo. That round simple VW logo is classic, everyone knows that logo. What you don’t want is something like the horrible Amigo energy logo Houston has.

3. And this is the bonus, they got one in colors that matches their jerseys. Sure any company logo can be made to match a jersey, but the VW logo was already basic black, white, or silver. It actually makes the DC jerseys look better. They now look more like a great soccer jersey if that’s possible. Imagine if they had some horrible rainbow or something equally as garish.

One can only hope the remaining teams with jerseys open for sponsorship do so well in making MLS look big time and less like a minor league setup.
