Vulnerabilities were exposed on Thursday
With manager Steve Nicol’s New England Revolution banged-up and missing six starters, FC Dallas had a great chance to make a statement to the rest of the league Thursday night in Frisco. The New England squad fielded a bevy of young, unproven players, while Dallas was able to play something close to its best XI.
The unfortunate result of Thursday night’s loss to a depleted Revolution is probably something to be expected to happen this season. After beating Chivas on the road, to lose like this, at home, to half of a reserve team – is a proper demonstration of how to exploit FC Dallas’ weaknesses.
The Rankomatic 130 has arrived and we are shifting over to a more quant-based methodology. The Rankomatic has instructed me to make some drastic changes to last week’s rankings, far more drastic than any movements we’ve had up to this point. Of course, the Rankomatic is also instructing me to make the rivers run red with the blood of the insolent, so I’m not totally sold yet on the work of the fine folks at USFBOR (United States Federal Bureau of Rankomaticking).
Cue Hank Williams Jr: – “Are you ready for some football?”
New England traditionally play in a 3-5-2 formation. The outside backs tend to stay a bit wide, and are allowed to join the attack at times, with the central defender holding a deeper position but not behaving as a sweeper. The midfield consists of a center triangle of two defensive mids positioned behind an attacking midfielder. On the wings, both players are expected to be two-way players and help out defensively, but are an essential part of the attack.
Training was in the big stadium today rather than on the training field. FCD usually trains there on the day before a home game. The sky is ominous but nothing comes of it during the morning; tonight…well, tonight it was something else.
It should be noted that getting a full three points on the road, especially at the HDC, is a significant thing for Dallas. That park has historically been a house of horrors for the Hoops and when you add in that Toja and Ricchetti sat out the match, the victory is even more impressive.
