Ray Burse Loaned to Portland Timbers

March 28th, 2008 . By: Buzz Carrick

The deal we talked about yesterday in our blog has finally gone through, as FC Dallas has announced the loan of Ray Burse Jr to the Portland Timbers for the 2008 season.  And while some corners may perhaps be disappointed, this should be a tremendous one for Burse.  Burse is a player with immense upside, but to realize that potential he needs to play and play a lot.

Going to USL-1 will give him a chance to get many more games of much higher quality than FCD reserves. In addition, Morrow has said the Timbers will not use him in US Open Cup games, meaning Ray will almost certainly play for Dallas in that tournament.  Dallas has stipulated in the loan agreement that Burse can be recalled at any time.

In addition, this move allows FCD to put Burse back on the developmental roster and accommodate André Rocha on the senior squad without cutting a player.

Here’s the FCD PR on the deal…

RAY BURSE LOANED TO PORTLAND TIMBERS

FC Dallas today completed a transaction which sends third-year goalkeeper Ray Burse Jr. on loan to the Portland Timbers of the United Soccer League’s 1st Division for the 2008 season. Per the agreement, Burse may be recalled by FC Dallas at any time during the year.

“We are fortunate to have three quality goalkeepers on our roster,” said FC Dallas head coach Steve Morrow. “With Dario claiming the starting position, it was important for us to find consistent and quality games for Ray so he can continue developing through experience. Ray is a big part of our future, and playing competitively will have him more prepared to step in when we need him. Furthermore, we are pleased with the progress that Josh Lambo has made this preseason.”

Burse, 23, was selected by Dallas in the 3rd Round of the 2006 MLS SuperDraft. He served as the backup goalkeeper for 20 of the team’s 32 games that year, though did not see action. The Ohio State grad made his professional debut on July 24, 2007 in a 1-1 draw with Guadalajara (Mexico) during the 2007 SuperLiga. He made his MLS debut on August 4, earning his first career shutout in a 1-0 win at Colorado. For the year, Burse started six regular season games, one Open Cup, one SuperLiga, and came on as a substitute in the team’s final playoff game at Houston.

Also, Brazilian midfielder Andre Rocha has received all the necessary paperwork and will assume a spot on the 18-man Senior Roster.

The deal with Toure is that it’s a complicated process as he’s not a normal signing. It may take a while for that contract to happen.

He’s a project anyway and won’t contribute immediately.

[...] * Ray Burse’s rebound. The trialist from FC Dallas got off to a horrific start. He let in a soft goal after giving up a weak rebound on a San Jose set piece. He got beat on a blast of a goal five minutes later. He looked unsettled and not in command of his backline, a backline he hardly has played with. But to his credit he rebounded nicely and made some huge saves in the second half. I’d give him a C+ on the evening. By the way, he has officially been loaned to the Timbers. [...]

That’s why we called him Rebound Ray. He has bad hands and even worse feet.
