Bolton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers, Tottenham Hotspur… there are plenty of English clubs that did not limit themselves to [enter city name here] FC. Sounders FC sounds great to me.

I too, have lived here all my life but I don’t think the officiall club name should be the Sounders. It seems to me that only in the US do we need to have silly mascots for as our team names.

The rest of the soccer world has nicknames for the players but these nicknames are not the actual club name. The nicknames sometimes refer to the fans or supporters of the club, There are exceptions like Rangers and Arsenal but mostly the official club names are the cities they play in.

Now Barcelona is a different story – their nickname Cules would be a good official name instead of a nickname – The Arses.

Thanks for all of you under 30’s who haven’t fallen for MLS forcing upon us all what should be “cool” today. The Seattle Sounders, although you may not be aware of the name, is synonymous with Soccer in Seattle.

The people of this region, many of which may not be die hard supporters but have attended matches over the years scoff when one mentions the plan by MLS to re-name the team as it jumps to the top flight here in the USA.

What? Why? That is Stupid! or a mix of such flavored language can be expected.

Honestly Dallas. I’d expect to see over the next 5 years both Vancouver -Whitecaps and the Portland -Timbers brought into the MLS fold as well.

The history between these three regional teams will no doubt help MLS.

IF MLS’s is seeking some insight to help generate a passionate fan base in the Pacific Northwest, I’d suggest firing their overpaid marketers and dump the focus groups.

Give us 5 years Dallas Fans. Come and visit, see for yourself.

Adrian Hanauer owns the USL Sounders and is one of the owners of the new MLS franchise. The USL Sounders will cease to exist in 2009 when the MLS team begins play. If fact, many of of the current Sounders will be the nucleus of the MLS team.

I was born and raised in Seattle before coming to Dallas in 1999. I remember going to NASL Sounders games in the Kingdome when I was a kid.

“Sounders” refers to the people of Seattle, in that they live on Puget Sound. I also am under 30, but I am a big fan of tradition and history. You don’t have to be an NASL fan to know that Seattle loves its Sounders. A quick trip to Google will tell you that. I would much rather play a team with tradition (and beat them) than one without. Beating “Seattle Alliance” would hold no great pride.

Sounders as a name works for me. But just what is a sounder? Wikipedia suggests it’s a device to measure ocean depths.

I dislike the name Sounders – I just don’t get it. I am under the age of 30, have no knowledge of NASL. Is this about pleasing the old-timers on BigSoccer and elsewhere or about a new generation of soccer?
