Morrow: Mina NOT Signed

February 29th, 2008 . 12:49 pm . By: Buzz Carrick

Contrary to what has been reported in other locations, FC Dallas Head Coach Steve Morrow says Roberto Mina has NOT been re-signed by the club.  The club is currently finalizing the deal in preparation for the Ecuadorian player to travel with the team to Brazil.  But the final details have not been worked out and the player is not yet on the FCD roster.

“Mina has not signed yet,” said Morrow at training this morning.  “We’re currently negotiating with him and his representatives on an agreement, a new contract.  We’re going through that and want to take Roberto with us to Brazil. We felt, and his agent felt, that we need to have an agreement in place before that.  He hasn’t signed a contract yet. We couldn’t sign Roberto ’til he has a P1 visa anyway.”

Morrow says the club did have an agreement in principle prior to the player’s arrival in Dallas. “Yeah we did [have an agreement in place]. The representatives wanted to know what the agreement would be so we worked that out before he got here.  But as usual one or two things change as we go along and we’re working through that.”

It’s been almost 18 months since Mina played competitive soccer and 9 months since he has trained for fitness.  Still Morrow says he values Mina and hopes to keep him.  “We have to be understanding of where he is right now in terms of his fitness.  Roberto is a player I admire a lot.  He’s got great ability, great talent. We all know what he’s capable of, what he did when he first came here.  We want him to get back to that level and we want to give him every chance to get back to that level.”

FCD is currently in roster compliance and no move will need to be made to accommodate Mina until he receives a P1 visa and signs his contract.

No, in other words, “we are not ready to sign the deal that is in place but would like to keep looking at Mina in Brazil even though he isn’t under contract”.

It sounds they are working on a temporary agreement to cover Mina while he travels with the team without a contract, not backing out of the original “in principle” contract.

In essence they have decided they will keep him, and are now working out the contract details… i.e. finalizing the paperwork.

The contract is not done, they are still negotiating the details, and no player can sign until he gets a P1 visa.
