Ricchetti Still Looking for a New Contract

Was he dropped as punishment?

February 23rd, 2008 . 12:45 pm . By: Buzz Carrick

It came as a surprise to many that Pablo Ricchetti was left off the travel squad to Monterrey for the Rio Grande Plate match against Tigres.  Despite Steve Morrow’s assertion that Ricchetti wasn’t traveling for “personal issues,” a red flag was raised in my mind when a player I had thought was a prime candidate for the captain’s armband was left behind.  So while the team was out of town I tracked down Ricchetti to see if he would talk about it.

Ricchetti, again demonstrating he’s a consummate professional, didn’t want to talk about the specifics of being left off the travel squad this week.  He was however willing to speak about his desire for a new contract.  “Officially, I can only tell you that I asked for more money based on the promise that FCD made to me through Steve [Morrow] and [Michael] Hitchcock the year before and that we are working to solve this issue,” said Ricchetti via email.

While I can’t yet get either Ricchetti or FCD to comment more specifically about what promises may or may not have been made, it seems clear Ricchetti went into the winter expecting a new deal.  Was there a communication problem?  Perhaps a lack of understanding about the way the league works?  We may never know unless one party or the other goes public with their grievances.

Ricchetti does have a contract so he may be hard pressed to get a new deal without any new leverage. Morrow seems adamant that no money will be forthcoming to any players that asked for a new deal.  Earlier this month Morrow seemed to be speaking almost directly at Ricchetti.  “Nobody in my eyes deserves to earn any more money until we start winning things,” Morrow said in response to my query about contract demands.  “I want guys on the roster to earn new contracts, earn some more money, not just do that after walking in the door.  Guys have to be here a long time to earn new contracts and earn more money.  The message is very simple and very clear, if we start winning things and the team starts producing, then guys will get rewarded for their efforts.”

This kind of contract negotiations can be disruptive if either party is determined to make it so. Ricchetti deserves credit as he seems content to keep an even keel, publicly.  He was certainly clear to me he didn’t want to rock the boat by making statements that could disrupt the team.  If FCD continues to stand their ground, Ricchetti’s only remaining recourse might be to ask to leave Dallas for another team in MLS.  When I asked Ricchetti if that was possible, he seemed to have little interest in taking that step.  “For me, my MLS career begins and ends with FCD,” said Ricchetti.  “I don’t want to play for anyone else.”

So it seems Ricchetti and the team remain at an impasse. Was Ricchetti left out of the Monterrey trip over his demands, or was there really some personal issue we don’t know about?  It’s likely the former, I think, and one can’t help but wonder if Morrow will carry a player into the season when he’s not playing in the team during the spring.

(without looking) has Pablo been in practice? I don’t think he has played any scrimmages (that I can remember).

    This situation stinks.

  2. Comment by Buzz Carrick on February 23, 2008 1:21 PM

he’s been in training with the team every day that I have been there. Being left out of the Tigres travel squad promoted me to ask him. There have been no other overt signs of trouble.

  3. Comment by jayslick on February 23, 2008 1:33 PM

ive been thinking he was most likely to be moved this off season to balance out the squad.

i don’t know much about front office discussions w/ pablo, but if they’re holding out on him, that’d be a sad way to do business. it’s similar to the kenny coop situation from what i’ve read. i hope FCD aren’t making promises they can’t keep.

too bad for pablo, especially when this isn’t the right time to not play. w/ a logjam at MF, this may be a no-win situation for him.

    Free Pablo!!!

  6. Comment by Captincanuck on February 23, 2008 2:36 PM

Pablo didn’t play today either, I also didn’t see him on the bench but I wasn’t looking for him either.

  7. Comment by Skeeter on February 23, 2008 2:52 PM

Pablo has become my favorite Hoop and I hope this situation gets resolved.

Thanks for digging deeper and keeping us informed Buzz. Nice Work.

  8. Comment by Bob Mould on February 23, 2008 3:11 PM

I’d like to comment about this possibly being a miscommunication between Pablo and the FO. Cooper and O’Brien both were given similar promises only to have the rugs yanked out from under both of them. Both of those guys speak English. I think it’s clear what’s happening here: The FO sweet talks people into signing low-ball contracts with promises for more money the following season when salary cap constraints loosen.

Now their lying, backstabbing ways have come home to haunt them. Did you guys see Pablo fighting through a broken wrist in the playoffs? Did you see the way he fought for the shirt until the bitter end? This is how you repay his loyalty, by breaking promises and going back on your word? It’s a classless way to do business and a horrible way to run a team. And now you’re punishing Pablo for asking you live up to your word? Way to take a happy, healthy locker room and sour it. Morrow and Hitch like to accuse people of being locker room cancers as they’re run out of town. Perhaps those two are the real locker room cancers.

  9. Comment by Ben on February 23, 2008 3:25 PM

So much for Morrow’s self-touted “man management.”

  10. Comment by the other alex on February 23, 2008 3:39 PM

This is probably the tip of the iceberg and, as has been mentioned mirrors Coopers situation. I’m sure Pablo was told that if HE did well he’d get a new deal. Then its turned around to the TEAM winning things. Seems Buzz has a real story here and that front office people have left due to similar “broken promises” Buzz should dig deeper and start by speaking to Sean McGee, chances are you’ll have a hell of a story at the expense of ANY relationship you have left with management at FCD. Good luck.

I’ve worked for people that do business like the FCD FO. I don’t work with them anymore. The short term fix may feel good in business but it’s the long term results that are important. I’d rather FCD give Pablo and Kenny “extensions” with some of the Ruiz allocation money rather than spend it all on a spec striker from Chile. I also think that while not wanting to rock the boat, Ricchetti must really feel like FCD will not meet agreements to risk a semi-public comment. Someone should let these players know that verbal agreements are valid and binding in the state of Texas.

  12. Comment by lax on February 23, 2008 5:26 PM

Sm is very dishonest and stabbed CC in the back to get his current job, looks like his lying ways have caught up to him. Soon the boys will have new manager if they don’t want to prduce for this one. Losing and locker room issues will be Steve’s end and that will be good for all the fans.

  13. Comment by Captincanuck on February 23, 2008 5:32 PM

I personally like Steve. The locker room is fine and he has control over it there is nothing that indicates that he doesn’t. Steve most likely promised Pablo a new deal and the FO doesn’t agree with it so he isn’t getting the money.

  14. Comment by Texass on February 23, 2008 6:32 PM

This front office is stupid. At a time when the Latin American corridor is wide open and FCD is filling its roster with talented and affordable Latin American players, the last thing it needs is to gain a reputation as the type of club that makes promises to its players and then doesn’t back them up. If the word gets out that our team is doing that, this franchise will be cut off. HUGE MISTAKE! HUGE MISTAKE!!! HUGE MISTAKE!!!!

  15. Comment by Ben on February 23, 2008 7:31 PM

I’d be willing to bet that Pablo and Kenny aren’t the only players that Morrow and Hitch have done this to. We just have to assume that Pablo and Kenny are the only ones brave enough to go public.

  16. Comment by Dan on February 23, 2008 7:34 PM

Seems like the only people talking about the “mistake” is the fans. The FO and Richetti aren’t talking about it. Maybe you should all stop jumping up and down long enough to breathe.

  17. Comment by Dan on February 23, 2008 7:35 PM

Perhaps they just cannot come to a number. What if Pablo asked for DP type money? Does that make him the bad guy now?

I like Pablo and do not want him to go. Lets let the “players” in this situation figure it out. They will let us know in due time as to what the situation is.

  18. Comment by Letts on February 23, 2008 8:23 PM

Pablo says he is asking for the money that was promised him. Do you really think they promised him DP money?

    Free Pablo!!!

  19. Comment by JPB4 on February 23, 2008 8:40 PM

They could have promised him more $$ upon the signing of a new contract, i.e. when his current deal expires. That would be an entirely different situation. I doubt Morrow is not playing him because of it, more likely is that Morrow already knows what he has in Richetti and is looking at other players to see how they fit and who to slot where. I think we all agree, and Morrow would too, that if the season started tomorrow and Richetti was NOT in the starting XI FCD would not be fielding their strongest squad.

I’m betting he is here, stays here, and starts on 3/30.

  20. Comment by the other alex on February 23, 2008 9:29 PM

and I’m betting he’s “injured” for a while.

  21. Comment by 3nOut on February 23, 2008 10:37 PM

i kinda like JPB4’s pessimistic attitude regarding pablo. steve morrow knows what he has in pablo and the professionalism he brings to the table. w/ the log-jam at CDM, why not give the others a chance to show their quality. besides, the preseason isn’t over, and all we’ve been playing are college teams. he’s in the same boat as kenny (who is making much less), and he’s still out there playing. as fans, our assumptions get the best of us at times. what’s important is what will happen come our 1st game against chivas.

  22. Comment by 3nOut on February 23, 2008 10:38 PM

    error: make that optimistic view

  23. Comment by FC Uptown on February 23, 2008 11:04 PM

This is the typical chicken-sh#t FO stuff – just as we’ve seen with other players. Why is Coach Morrow such a shill for the FO? Do what you say you are going to do, it’s simple. Can’t plead no money when you just got rid of Ruiz, Goodson, Gbandi, Denilson, and His-Slop. Embarrassing.

  24. Comment by jan on February 24, 2008 7:12 AM

Steve’s lies are catching up to him, I say he’s gone by the allstar break when we are stuck in 5th place in the West.

I’d still like to know what specific promised was told to Pablo, and who exactly told him it. For all I can tell, I’ve only heard one side of the dispute, Pablo’s side.

  27. Comment by Jason S. on February 24, 2008 10:52 AM

Teddy, read Pablo’s statement again. He said Steve and Hitchcock made the promises. I forget who made the promises to KCJ, but I know it wasn’t LH.

Frankly, I don’t want to hear from Morrow or Hitchcock on why these guys don’t deserve the money they were promised. I want to know why they think it’s a good practice to promise guys money and then reneg on that promise.

  28. Comment by the other alex on February 24, 2008 11:09 AM

I believe Clarke and Hitch made the promise to Cooper in front of witnesses and I doubt any of this would have gone down were Lamar Hunt still alive. Buzz needs to keep digging.

  29. Comment by Teddy on February 24, 2008 11:46 AM

I have read his statement. It says nothing of exactly WHAT was promised by Steve and Hitchcock. For me, it matters what the “promise” was. Players and management spend lots of time and money negotiating contracts. Why wasn’t this “promise” put in the two-year contract? Until I hear these specific “promises”, I support the FO in not handing out raises until the team starts winning hardware.

Why all the Morrow hate? I like Pablo for his intangibles, his heads-up play, and his unibrow, but I don’t think it’s time to pay him 2-3 times more than Marcelo or Adrian or Coop or Dax. Isn’t this the result of Davino’s signing (and presumed $250K paycheck)?

  32. Comment by FC Uptown on February 24, 2008 12:25 PM

Teddy, why would players start believing the FO now?

  33. Comment by steveToro on February 24, 2008 12:33 PM

Ricchetti fun fact: when playing for Real Valladolid, his teams finished 16th, 12th, 13th, 18th, and 6th. He then jumped to Ternana, which finished 20th (and was relegated to Serie C), and then played for Quilmes, which finished 20th in Clausura 2007(and was relegated).

I like him and what he does for the shape of the team, but he’s not yet shown that he’s the linchpin for a successful squad.

  34. Comment by the other alex on February 24, 2008 12:37 PM

He was probably promised a raise if he did well and the teams performance probably wasn’t mentioned. Probably expected another 40/50 k or so not DP type money. Chances are the word is out in the locker room and “get it in writing” the mantra of the moment. Of course FCD probably won’t put it in writing so then its up to the player to decide what to do next. Personally, were it me and I had done well, I’d work hard, play well while playing out my option then tell them to stick it as far up their lying asses as it would go. Assuming that the lying baskets were still with the club, which, given what appears to be going on might well be one hell of an assumption.

  35. Comment by Skeeter on February 24, 2008 1:36 PM

I have to issue a yellow card on the Stevetoro argument about how poor Pablo’s other teams have faired. Would you say that Robert Horry is an all time NBA great or was the “linchpin” of any of the championship teams he was on with LA, Houston, or San Antonio? No, he was a role player who just happened to be on some great teams, just like Pablo is a role player who just happens to have played for some lousy teams.

Alright, your name is in the book. Play on, but keep it clean.

  36. Comment by steveToro on February 24, 2008 1:44 PM

No, I completely agree with you, Skeeter. I actually had gone off looking for reasons why Pablo should get paid when I found out that he’s been on some crap teams. :-)

  37. Comment by twotone on February 24, 2008 5:57 PM

why would anyone need to talk with Shawn McGee? he works at SMU now and has been there for more than a year.

  38. Comment by the other alex on February 25, 2008 7:43 AM

Because he worked for FCD for some time prior to leaving for SMU and probably knows a bit about this subject.

  39. Comment by JPB4 on February 25, 2008 8:39 AM

All the speculation and heresay on the supposed “promise” is jsut that and internet folly and it also doesn’t matter AT ALL.

Pablo has a contract, like it or not he has a contract that the signed, played under last season, etc. FCD nor MLS is not in a position to renegotiate contracts if they do not have to. If you are in your last year of the contract I think they would certainly do so, so as not to lose a valuable member of the squad. If there are multiple years left on the deal, and a player wants more $$, I’d always tell them “we’ll discuss during your last year” and renegotiate then.

I don’t know about Pablo’s contract, years, $$, years left, but if he’s not in his last year he is obligated to play under the current deal, and with the way world soccer/football is set up, he can’t just quit and go to another MLS team or even ANY other team sanctioned by FIFA.

Lastly, typically FO and team staff (i.e. coaching staff) do not air dirty laundry or discuss such matters in public, so you only get 1/2 the story and it is biased.

Morrow is not far removed from his playing days, knows the position the players are in, etc. I have never seen or heard ANYTHING from Morrow to indicate he is anything less than a stand-up guy and a “players coach”.
