FCD Selects Reyering and Shuleva in Supplemental Draft

January 25th, 2008 . By: Buzz Carrick

FC Dallas made two selections in this afternoon’s MLS Supplemental Draft. With the 22nd overall selection in the second round, FC Dallas selected Yannick Reyering.  In the third round, FCD selected SMU midfielder Ben Shuleva with the 36th overall selection.   Reyering is a massive target forward but damaged his knee late in the Virginia season and will need extended recovery time before being read.  Shuleva, a holding midfielder, was injured shortly into his first game at this year’s MLS Combine, it’s unknown how severe his injury is at this time.

Reyering, a forward from the University of Virginia. In 56 career games for the Cavaliers, the German-born striker scored 39 goals and added 10 assists. After scoring 13 goals in 2007, Reyering was named a MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist in addition to receiving All-ACC First Team and NSCAA All-South Region Second Team honors.

In the third round, FCD selected SMU midfielder Ben Shuleva with the 36th overall selection. Shuleva, who spent the first two years of his college career at St. John’s University before transferring to SMU, started 66 of the 78 games in which he appeared, scoring five goals. As a tri-captain of the Mustangs in 2007, Shuleva was named to the NSCAA All-Midwest Region First Team and All-Conference USA First Team after recording three goals and one assist.

Yannick Reyering

2nd Round, 22nd Overall
Position: Forward
Height: 6-6
Weight: 205

National Team: –
Hometown: Mettingen, Germany
Age: 23
Date of Birth: 7-10-1984
Place of Birth: Ibbenbueren, Germany
Nationality: Germany

3rd Degree Ranking Comments:  Reyering is an immense target type striker that will easily handle the riggers of MLS.  He was injured late in the year and wasn’t invited to the combine, but he’s the best target striker in this pool.  The other junior on our list is the big target type pure striker Reyering. At 6 foot 6 and 200 pounds Reyering will be tough for any MLS defender to handle physically.  You won’t see his name on any Generation adidas list despite being a junior because he’s apparently out of eligibility having played some college equivalent ball in his native Germany prior to joining Virginia.  The two-time Hermann Semi-finalist finishes his career with 39 goals and 10 assists in just three college seasons.  Reyering scored 13 goals in 16 games this year prior to suffering a season ending knee injury in the Cavs final regular season game against Wake Forest.  The giant German’s got above average feet, touch, and technical game for a player of his size.

Ben Shuleva

3rd Round; 36th overall
Position: Midfielder
Height: 5-11
Weight: 175
College: SMU
National Team: –
Hometown: Dublin, Ohio
Age: 21

3rd Degree Ranking Comments: A hard nosed, hard tackling D-mid, but I wonder if he’s got good enough feet.  2007 Conference USA First Team, 2006 Third Team.  Tore his ACL in the 2006 post season.  Spent 2004 and 2005 at St John’s and was a starter in 2005.  MLS Combine.

Would Reyering have to count as an international this year, or would they be able to put him directly on IR?

from your scouting, he was the #4 fwd and was the best target fwd. 6-6, goal scorer, smart, skilled…what made him be undrafted? was it due to his injury and international status?

also, is there an IR spot where he won’t count at all? maybe we can tuck him away if his knee problems persist. same goes w/ shuleva.

I like this Reyering pick, a guy with a HUGE upside!

Im not real familiar with how the MLS draft works, but my guess is that these supplemental picks carry less risk and allow teams to take risks.
My guess is Reyering wont get see time on the field in any fashion till this summer, and isnt looked at as a real option till ‘09. Just seeing a description of him makes me drool.

Reyering will count as a international unless he has some kind of green card that I don’t know about.

I think it’s safe to say he slid down for that reason and the injury. He was also a junior and ran out of eligibility so that may have thrown him off some teams radars.

IR would put both players out for the year. It’s more likely FCD would not sign each and give them some kind of rehab situation and let them compete when healthy. Some kind of training fee and the FCD resources to get healthy I would imagine.

Its hard to believe that a player of Shuleva’s very limited athletic ability can actually be drafted to play in the MLS. It shows you how watered down and lacking talent and the ability to judge true ability is in the MLS.

Reyering will likely turn out to be a Abe Thompson-type sleeper, a guy who should have gone in the first 2 rounds but due to injuries slipped. He will compete for time with Abe for the target role. Yes KC will play under or wide since he really is not a target type of forward.
