River Plate North
January 21st, 2008 . 9:32 pm . By: Buzz CarrickCould FC Dallas be about to strengthen its claim to being River Plate North? Ole and TyC Sports, two of Argentina’s most reputable sources for soccer news, have reported that former Argentine international Marcelo Gallardo has turned down an offer from powerhouse San Lorenzo to accept an MLS job. His agent confirms the move, but refuses to name the team. Though the Argentine press assumes El Muñeco is headed to DC United to take the spot created by Juan Sebastian Veron failed signing, and some US press now think he might be going to New York, it certainly doesn’t seem that far fetched to think we might see the volatile attacking midfielder in Hoops. Is it a case of Gallardo claiming an MLS offer to milk more money from San Lorenzo? Or could he really be headed to the United States? At this point, it’s not clear. However, the Hoops have had success with other River alumni and, oh goodness, look who played together in a charity match starring ex-River players last year in Argentina. The Marcelo Gallardo name certainly make more sense to 3rd Degree than the 33 year old Claudio López does, since El Muñeco has been playing at a higher level with Monaco and PSG. 10 Comments Comments RSS TrackBack Identifier URI Leave a comment |

Gallardo is an intriguing name
If San Lorenzo is trying to sign him then that means he can still play at a very high level. Maybe Dario can convince that FCD is a good place for him because of all the Hispanic players on our roster. It wouldn’t be that hard of a transition for him like DC or NY would be. I would be willing to sign him as a DP.
If Gallardo is an attacking mid, would that move Toja back paired with Pablo in the assumed 3-5-2 formation?
Would that make Serioux or Saragosa expendable?
I vote Saragosa
Since Serioux is healthy this time around, would the CB experiment actually work this time? Or would Toja move to to left midfield, with Pablo/Serioux pairing up?
And, I like me some River Plate. I hope we do sign him. It’s one step closer to making them our partner club.
I’m not sure I like Toja out wide. He was much better when played inside last season.
Now, it could have been the injury that caused the decrease in production from the wing. I think the best situation is for Toja to remain central and more speed on the wing.
Captincanuck,
DC has Fred, Moreno, Niell and Emilio (and soon to have Peralta, Martinez, and Carvallo). I don’t see him having a hard time transitioning on the field or in the lockerroom.
[...] some media think New York will be his home. While people down here in Dallas wouldn’t mind to see him come here and play now that the Hoops have no Carlos Ruiz. Just food [...]
well, looks like gallardo will be going to DC and not here.

What’s D.C. got that we don’t got?
