Ten Players Morrow Might Like

January 17th, 2008 . 8:44 am . By: Buzz Carrick

I’ve been asked to put out some names of players that I think fit Morrow’s taste for rangy soccer players.  This is all just my opinion based on what I have seen and know about players.  I tried not to pick the best 10 players in the pool but instead looked for a couple guys who might last through the first four rounds.  They are listed in alphabetical order.

Ten Players Morrow Might Like

Ely Allen (Washington) – A forward at UW, likely a wing or midfielder in the pro game. In credible work rate and energy, he can really cover some ground and has nice moves.

Jeremy Barlow (Virginia) – A fast midfielder that needs to improve his soccer thinking, but could be coached into a nice player.  Has lots of good tools, he just needs to put it together.

Eric Brunner (Ohio State) – Skinny, but very mobile and quick. Real tall and can pass fairly well for a big man.  I think he’s more mobile than some of the other defenders who are more highly coveted.

Jeff Cameron (Rhode Island) – A tall midfielder that I like out wide.  He’s got good range and is capable of getting to the end to cross.

Scott Campbell (North Carolina) – A more central midfielder but one who can cover good ground.  Not as nifty as Avila or O’Brien, but more active.

Joe Germanese (Duke) – A wide midfielder that I really like, can beat players with both pace and dribble. Plays defense and works hard.

Jon Leathers (Furman) – A center back converting to outside back.  Real fast and mobile, still learning to play out wide but has big upside.

Rauwshan McKenzie (Michigan State) -An athletic and aggressive defender with recovery speed.  Not a refined soccer brain, but could be really good.  Can play both centrally or wide.

Shea Salinas (Furman) – The fastest wide mid with the biggest range.  This kid can really move.  Soccer skills not as good as Germanese but he’s blazing fast.

Brek Shea (US U17) – Tall and agile with great feet for a 6′3″ midfielder.  Could play any spot in midfield has great speed and good awareness, plus he knows how to play.

What gives? No Avila? I see many MF and DF up here… are we to believe that SM and the front office are looking over seas, possibly DEEP south for a partner to attack with Coop?

Avila is nifty, but he’s not super fast or rangy. IMO he’s not a Morrow kinda guy, which doesn’t mean he’s a nice player. Nyarko is nice too, but I didn’t list him as a Morrow guy either.

This is NOT the top ten players in the pool. It’s a sample of guys I think Morrow might like in all four rounds. The best 4 or 5 players are obvious, IMO these are other guys to watch for if you are a Dallas fan.

And yes, my info is Morrow is looking for a foreign player to work with Cooper.

Any prediction on our first-round draft selections Buzz? I would be disappointed if we passed up Avi; IMO he is like a better version of Ned Grabavoy

Shea Salinas is also a local guy coming from Grapevine. I think its difficult to get an idea of what morrow likes. Just look at some of the players who are not fast and rangy that are on the roster. Richetti, Dax,sebastian, wileman, marcelo

    Chase, mock draft later today.

Josh, Botero is gone and Saragosa wasn’t a Morrow signing. McCarty isn’t fast (and wasn’t a morrow pick either) but he’s quick and rangy, as are Wileman and Ricchetti.

Then again Morrow may not pick a single player on this list. *Shrugs*

Buzz, do you think Shea could be FCDs first pick?

It sounds like he is an SM player but it doesn’t look like he’ll last to #8 according to most mock drafts.

I am just wondering if we may try to swing a trade down. Perhaps our pick (#2 overall) for allocation $$ and someone else’s first pick that wants to move up – perhaps Columbus with the #6 pick.
Columbus may want to move up to get a shot a Nyarko if KC goes for James..
We could grab Shea at #6..

Shea would be a nice pick up since he is a Texas kid. At 6′3 he sounds more like a CB in the making rather than a midfielder. What about Alex Nimo?

Shea is one of about four players I could see FCD taking at #2. He won’t make it to #8.

A trade down is also possible. Very possible.

Brek Shea. I don’t want a player named Brek Shea, no matter how good he might be.
