Final 2008 MLS SuperDraft Defender Pool

January 16th, 2008 . 4:18 pm . By: Buzz Carrick

Ed Note: These rankings are the final version post combine.

The defender pool is one of the most talented and deep pools in this year’s collection and may be one of the deepest in quite a few years.  Not only is there big time talent at the top, but there is a nice selection of players with potential pro ability that may run into the double figures.  Particularly at center back there are quite a few interesting prospects.  The second ten have some very nice prospects, but there are some “has a chance” guys in the 20s.

2008 MLS SuperDraft Defender Pool

Generation adidas players have been added.

Rank Player School Class Height Weight Notes & Comments
1 Julius James Connecticut Sr 6′0″ 175 The best defender in the draft pool with terrific set of athletic tools and the complete soccer game.  He didn’t dominate the combine like I hoped, but still the best back.  Two years ago a former MLS assistant said James was a “beast” and told me he was MLS ready.  James is the complete package of speed, skill, strength, and talent who can start in MLS from day one.  The Trinidadian tops his resume with a remarkable three Big East Defensive Player of the Year awards.  James’ First Team All-American nod in 2007 makes him the only player in UConn history to be two time First Team.  Second Team All-American in 2005 makes him and Chris Gbandi the only Huskies to be a three time All-American.  The two-time Hermann Trophy Semi-finalist should have been signed a couple years ago, now MLS will almost certainly have to sign him in advance of the draft to keep him from going to Europe. 2007 Soccer American MVP.   Three time College Soccer News 1st Team All-American.  Three time Big East 1st team (05, 06, 07), 2nd team (04). Two Time Top Drawer Soccer 1st Team of the Year. In 2007 led the Huskies defense to 14 shutouts and a 0.53 goals-against average.  8 career goals, 2 per season.  MLS Combine.
2 Patrick Phelan Wake Forest Sr 6′0″ 175 A strong and capable defender who reads the game well and has good enough feet to play in midfield.  His best spot is as a center back and he’ll be a defensive leader and organizer.  A First Team All-American award this year as a defensive midfielder for the National Champs after two seasons as a starting center back shows Phelan’s soccer smarts and versatility.  A tremendously quick reader of the game and blessed with terrific work rate and energy, Phelan has great range despite not being noticeably fast.  Solid touch and passing skills, his best asset is his soccer brain.  He’s probably better suited for the back line at the next level as the time and space shrink.  Showed he was capable of playing wide as a starting freshman outside back for Wake. A former US U20 who went to the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship in Holland, a former US U18, and the 2003 Gatorade National High School Player of the Year.  2007 Soccer American 1st Team MVP, College Soccer News 2nd Team All-American.  2005 Top Drawer Soccer 2nd Team All-American. MVP of a tournament in Palence, France with U-18 National Team.  MLS Combine.
3 Chance Myers UCLA So     Generation adidas. A modern kind of outside defender that might well play a great deal of midfield.  He’s fast with great feet and has the game to defend and still make an impact at the other end.  2007 First Team Pac 10 with 3 goals. 2006 Top Drawer Soccer All-Freshman second-team. Slowed a bit by injury in 2006 but still had 1 goal and 4 assists.  Earned Parade All-America and NSCAA/adidas Youth All-America honors in 2005. In the current U23 camp, played for the US in the Pan Am games.  Former US U20 and U18.
4 Sean Franklin Cal State Northridge Sr-r 5′10″ 180 Big, strong, fast, and willing to get forward, Franklin cemented himself as one of the top two outside backs with just one day at the combine.  It’s easy to see why he’s in the latest U23 camp.  Despite missing the majority of his senior year, Franklin showed enough in just seven games to be named All-Big West First Team for the third straight time.  A Second Team nod in his freshman year came after a red shirt in 2003 and gives him four straight Big West nods.  Franklin was called into the US U23’s last February for their tour of Japan and was a US U20 back in 2004.  The fleet right back was named to the PDL All-League Team with the San Fernando Valley Quakes. He’s got the athleticism to really get up and down the field. 2006 Top Drawer Soccer 3rd Team of the Year, 2005 TDS 1st Team of the Year. 2004 Big West 2nd Team.  2003 red shirt.  MLS Combine.
5 Eric Brunner Ohio State Sr 6′4″ 165 Brunner has better feet than Iro, is taller and better in the air than Phalen, and is quicker and smarter than Horst.  He can also play wide in a pinch.  Oh yeah, he’s also a lefty.  A tall (6’4”) and lanky (165 lbs) defender with good speed, Brunner is predictably great in the air and dangerous on set plays in the offensive end.  Played as a center back the last two seasons for the 2007 Division 1 runner-ups, but has versatility to play wide having started at LB for the buckeyes in ’05 and half the season for Maryland in ’04 prior to his transfer.  A First Team All-American in 2007 and two time First Team nod in the very competitive Big Ten.  He needs to improve his skill on the ball, but could help a MLS team by being able to play multiple spots.  Brunner has been compared favorably to Clarence Goodson.  Three year starter at Ohio State, 11 starts at Maryland at left back before transfer.  2007 Soccer American 2nd Team MVP, College Soccer News 2nd Team All-American, Top Drawer Soccer 3rd Team of the Year (2nd time).  Two time Big Ten 1st Team (06, 07).   PDL with Ohio Thunder from 1998-2003.  MLS Combine.
6 Andy Iro UC Santa Barbara Sr 6′5″ 220 A player capable of dominating a game defensively as he’s big, quick and physical.  His feet aren’t very good, but neither were Eddie Pope’s.  Another non-American, this one a Brit, Iro put together a terrific career with the Gauchos.  At 6 foot 5 and 220 pounds, Iro is a immense physical presence in the back and is capable of dominating games at both ends of the field.  A good reader of the game and commanding personality add to the strong and powerful physical mix.  Iro has quick enough feet to not be exposed on the dribble and can play out of the back.   A two time Second Team All-American, three time Big West Defensive Player of the Year, a Hermann Semi-finalist in 2007, and Big West Freshman of the Year back in 2004 top his honors. Defensive MVP of the College Cup in 2006 as he led his team to the National Title while playing with a nagging knee injury.  2007 Soccer American 2nd Team MVP, Top Drawer Soccer 2nd Team of the Year.  Three time College Soccer News 1st Team All-American. Four Time All-Big West.  MLS Combine.
7 Rob Valentino San Francisco Sr 6′3″ 190 Generation adidas. An outstanding leader and versatile center back, Valentino would have been ranked higher had he not lost his entire senior year to a pre-season knee injury.  The Don’s co-captain is skilled enough to have played both midfield and forward for San Francisco on various occasions.  2006  West Coast Conference Player of the Year, 2005 West Coast Conference Defender of the Year, and 2004 WCC First Team as a freshman.  A US U23 in early 2007, Valentino will almost certainly be drafted despite the injury if he chooses to leave school.  Will he red shirt and return for another year with the Dons to help his pro prospects?  USF Co-MVP in 2006 and Top Drawer Soccer 1st Team of the Year.  Three time WCC 1st Team. 2004 Named College Soccer News all-American.  2007 Herman Watch List.
8 Jon Leathers Furman   5′8″ 150 The undersized 5’8” 150 pound Leathers was a terrific four year starter at center back for Furman, but has already talking about switching to outside back at the pro level.  Leathers is the Southern Conference Player of the Year for the second straight season and was named All-SoCon first team for the third time.  He was also named the 2006-2007 Furman Male Athlete of the Year and Second Team All-American.  A recent U23 call up for the trip to China, Leathers is the only current collegiate player on the US roster that includes 20 professionals. 2007 Soccer America 2nd Team MVP, College Soccer News 1st Team All-American, Top Drawer Soccer 2nd Team of the Year.  2006 Top Drawer Soccer 3rd Team of the Year.  Three time SoCon 1st Team.  PDL: Atlanta Silverbacks.  MLS Combine.
9 David Horst Old Dominion Sr 6′4″ 195 Horst is the first ever back-to-back winner of the Colonial Athletic Association Defender of the Year award.  CAA All-Rookie Team as a freshman and a second teamer in 2005.  The 6-4 Horst led the ODU defense to 12 shutouts and a 0.63 goals against average in 2007.  Horst is also the 2007 PDL Defender of the Year with the Hampton Roads Piranhas who set a PDL record with 10 consecutive shutouts and helped the Piranhas to a 14-0-2 record, the only team to finish the PDL regular season unbeaten.  Horst leaves ODU after the school’s best four year stretch in history as their all time leader in starts and games.  2007 College Soccer News 2nd Team All-American, Top Drawer Soccer 2nd Team of the Year. MLS Combine.
10 Rauwshan McKenzie Mich St Sr 6′1″   A big right back and four year starter for a mid tier Michigan State program that usually has some solid defense. Four career goals and five assists.  Strong senior year in the Big Ten has attracted some scouting notice.  2007 Top Drawer Soccer 3nrd Team and Big Ten 1st Team.  MLS Combine.
11 Yomby William ODU Sr 6′4″ 185 The downside is he’s 26 already.  But he’s got some raw tools and potential.  Spent most of 2006 & 2005 injured.  2005 CAA all-rookie team.  Before ODU he played soccer at the University of Oschang in Cameroon.  An unknown prospect who will need to show at the combine to let people know who he is.  MLS Combine.
12 Brandon Owens UCLA sr-5 6′1″ 170 A player of immense athleticism and potential that never realized that potential as a four year Bruin starter.  Owens is a center back who has the raw tools to play wide in MLS.  In 2006 tore his ACL and  medical red shirted to get another season of eligibility. Returned to earn 2007 Pac Ten Honorable Mention and became UCLA’s first four-time All-Pac-10 honoree since 2003 (05 2nd, 04 2nd, 03 1st).  Is he fully recovered, does he have the soccer smarts for MLS?  2003 Soccer American All-Freshman Team, College Soccer News All-Freshman Team. US U29, U17 residency, U16, U14. 2003 McDonald’s and two-time Parade All-American.  Co-captain of the Under-17 National Team at the 2003 World Youth Championships.  MLS Combine
13 Adrian Chevannes SMU Sr 5′11″ 180 A versatile player who followed a bizarre path to get to this point, Chevannes has one thing MLS scouts love and coaches know can’t be taught, serious speed.  The dread locked Pony played forward, midfield, and defense for SMU over the years but projects as an outside back in MLS.  After coming out of the US U17 residency program, Chevannes started his college career in 2003 at Clemson before transferring to SMU for the 2004 season.  He scored four goals and added two assists in 2004 playing mostly in the back line before losing the last three games of the year to a knee injury.  In 2005 Chevannse went to Utah and spent a year training with Real Salt Lake before returning to SMU in 2006.  As a junior he was moved to forward and was the second leading scorer for the Hilltoppers with six goals and six assists to earn a Second Team Conference USA nod.  Back in the rear guard for 2007 he was named to the Conference USA First Team.  Chevannes scored 13 goals and added 9 assists in his long winding college career. 2007 Top Drawer Soccer 3rd Team of the Year.  MLS Combine.
14 Joe Donoho Bradley Sr-r 6′3″ 195 A sweeper for Bradley, can he convert to a more conventional center back spot in MLS?  A break out year in 2007 to earn Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, the first in school history.  Bradley’s third-leading scorer with six goals and three assists and led the Braves with four game-winning goals.  11 career goals and 4 assists. 2007 Third Team All-American, 2nd Team College Soccer news.  2006 MVC 2nd Team. 2003-2004 at Rutgers, say out 2005 to transfer.  PDL: Michigan Bucks
15 Julian Valentin Wake Forest Sr 5′11″ 180 A player involved in a great many Youth National Teams that earned lots of college honors.  So who is he ranked so low?  Speed, or specifically his lack of it.  See how deep he played Nyarko in the College Cup for an example.  My sources say he wanted to go Generation adidas last year but didn’t receive an offer from MLS.   A very soccer smart defender.  Suffered an injury in late August that sidelined him for the first 13 games of the season yet was still a Herman Semi-Finalist.  2006 2nd Team All-American, Top Drawer Soccer 1st Team of he Year, College Soccer News 1st Team, and ACC 1st Team. 2005 & 2004 TDS 2nd Team of the Year.  US U18 and U20. U.S. Residency program in Bradenton, Fla and a member of the U.S. U-17 national team that participated in the 2003 World Championships in Finland. MLS Combine
16 Ryan Miller Notre Dame Sr-r 5′11″ 160 A late arrival as a dominate player.  A very offensive right back and Notre Dame’s second leading scorer with six goals and 4 assists in 2007.  Miller has made 86 straight starts for the Irish.  Seven career assists prior to 2007 shows multiple years being dangerous getting forward.  2007 2nd Team All-American, Third Team of the Year by Top Drawer Soccer, and Big East 1st Team.  2003 Medical red shirt.  MLS Combine.
17 Mike Zaher UCLA Sr 5′10″ 165 A two year starter for an exceptional Bruins program.  Zaher is a quick, average size left back who is a dangerous threat at the offensive end and a solid defender at the defensive end. A Two time First Team All-Pac 10 player, Zaher was UCLA’s second leading scorer in 2007 with four goals and three assists out of the right back spot.  An outstanding leader on and off the field, The Bruins’ co-captain was a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.  Zaher is also a former US U18.  If you are young enough you might recognize him as the soccer playing leading man in the video for the song “Too Little Too Late” by JoJo.  2007 Top Drawer Soccer 3rd Team of the Year. Two-time Parade All-American, 2004 McDonald’s All-American team, 2003 NSCAA/adidas All-American team.  MLS Combine.
18 Jamil Roberts Santa Clara Sr 6′0″ 175 Another once very promising center back who struggles with a few injuries during his career and then blossomed as a senior.  A 2007 West Coast Conference Defender of the Year and first team, Top Drawer Soccer 1st Team of the Year, College Soccer News 3rd Team All-American.  Four year starter, injured his elbow in 2005. 2006 WCC Honorable Mention.  Former US U18. Could have potential as a defensive midfielder. Brother Troy is a member of the LA Galaxy.
19 Tim Jepson Duke Sr 6′0″ 175 2007 All-ACC 2nd Team.  Started at sweeper for four years, as freshman let to Duke to the College Cup. 2006 Duke Defensive MVP. Semifinalist for the 2007 Coach John Wooden Citizenship Cup. Started every game for three years until he missed 10 games this season with thigh injury.  An underrated, but very smart soccer player with enough pace to make it.
20 Hugh Cronin NC State Sr 6′1″ 165 Versatile player, is he a d-mid or a defender.  Midfielder as a fresh, two years as a center back, As a senior played both defense and midfield.  MLS Combine.
21 Matt Marquess Santa Clara Sr 6′0″ 170 Four year starter.  2007 WCC Honorable Mention. 2004 UC Santa Cruz, helped them to D3 title game.  Transferred to Santa Clara in 2005.  Marquess moved from defense to midfield as a senior, showing some versatility, and finished the regular season by playing in his 65th straight game for SCU. He scored his first career goal as a Bronco and dished out two assists.
22 David Worthen UNC-G Sr     A highly impressive four time SoCon 1st Team performer.  Worthen appeared in 86 matches at UNC-Greensboro, starting 85 of them. 2003 at Wake Forest (red shirt).  The Spartans won two Southern Conference Tournament titles and three SoCon regular season crowns in his four seasons with an overall record of 62-23-5 during that span. US U16.  MLS Combine
23 Scott Bolkan Stanford Sr 6′2″ 180 A three and a half year starter for the Cardinal, a physical and smart defender. 2007 Top Drawer Soccer 1st Team of the Year and Pac 10 1st Team.  2006 Pac Ten Second Team.  Can play in the midfield as well as defense. Tabbed as the eighth best college recruit in 2003 by Soccer America. MLS Combine
24 Matt Britner Brown Sr 6′1″ 170 2007 Ivy League Player of the Year and College Soccer News 3rd Team All-American. 2005 All-Ivy 1st Team sandwiched between missed seasons in 2004 and 2006 with injuries. If he could stay healthy might be a pro level player.  Captain of Canadian U20s.  Two-time winner of the Sport Nova Scotia/Soccer Nova Scotia Male Athlete of the Year Award.  MLS Combine.
25 A.J. Kulp Old Dominion Sr 5′6″ 158 2007 CAA First Team nod.  Senior co-captain attacking midfielder scored in or assisted a goal in 11 of the last 12 games ODU scored. Doubled his stats this year: 2007 5 goals, 8 assists.  Career 7 goals and 16 assists. MLS Combine.
26 Andre Sherard UNC  Sr 5′10″ 170 A athletic central defender at UNC, I think he will have a better shot at outside defender at the pro level.  UNC has a lot of talent come through their program without getting very far in the NCAA tournament, Sherard is just another example.  Four year starter, three time Tar Heels’ Mike Thompson Most Valuable Player Award.  He has started 81 games and missed just one contest since 2004 and contributed to 35 shutouts.  Sherard is UNC’s first three-time All-ACC player since Danny Jackson (99-01) with a 2nd team not in 07 and 05 and a 1st team nod in 2006.  2006:  Top Drawer Soccer First team of the Year.  2004 ACC All-Freshman Team.  PDL: Raleigh Elite.  MLS Combine.
27 Karl Schilling UConn Sr 6′0″ 160 Only played three games his senior year after a knee injury.  Probably a good idea for him to red shirt and return to UConn for an extra season.  He probably suffers by comparison to James.  2006 Top Drawer Soccer 2nd Team of the Year and Big East 3rd Team.

32 Corey Sipos Akron Sr-r 6′2″ 175 2007 MAC Player of the Year (and 1st Team), College Soccer News 3rd Team All-American.  Another good looking player on paper out of the strong Akron program, yet few Akron players have impressed as a pro as the team is usually better than the sum of it’s parts.  A medical red shirt in 2006 but has recovered well. 2005 MAC 2nd Team. 2003 with Fresno State was named Pac 10 Honorable Mention.  he could use a good combine, and he wasn’t invited.  MLS Combine.

If Iro would sign, I’d put him above Phelan and Brunner. Haven’t seen Franklin yet. Myers I saw last year, not suprised if he’s top 3 material here.

buzz, what do you think of the mock draft on mlsnet projecting that FCD pick Valentino above Phelan and Iro? everyone knows we are in the market for defenders and they have us picking a center back. we need outside guys and cbs.

do your rankings here reflect anything you know about SM and the type of players he likes and could potentially select? who do you think he’ll pick?

my rankings take into account what Morrow has told me but also what many other people have told me.

As for the mock draft… first Valentino plays for San Francisco, not South Florida. He’s also coming off a bad injury. Plus I’m not sure Morrow has scouted him since he was hurt most of this season.

So I will say I find it doubtful. But anyone’s mock draft is a guess, including mine.

Zaher’s a left back (he’s naturally left footed), not a right back.
