Cooper Happy, Says Morrow

Cooper (Maggie Hutchinson, 3rd Degree)
Over the last few days rumors have been swirling, most likely originating with this Glenn David report,  that Kenny Cooper wants out of Dallas.  I tracked down Steve Morrow at the combine to ask him about Cooper and his situation.  According to Morrow the rumors are a non-starter.

There’s nothing to it.  Cooper is happy in Dallas.  We’re on the same page with the contract.  He wants a new one, we want to give him a new one.  Cooper just needs to get healthy, back on form, and productive and the contract will get taken care of.

So how do these kinds of rumors get started and what does it tell us?

Based on what I know of him, Cooper is a keep-your-head-down-and-work-hard kind of player.  I have a great deal of respect for the young man and his attitude and work ethic.  Cooper’s always seemed to me to be happy playing and training in his back yard.  He continues to work hard to recover from the broken leg he suffered at the feet of Tyrone Marshall.

Without getting into details, of which there are few in this situation that anyone will confirm or talk about, let me just say that generally speaking agents work hard to get their clients paid.  Let’s not forget that Cooper has a relatively new agent, Proactive Sports Management.  There were a few rumblings when Cooper signed with Proactive that his camp wasn’t 100% happy with what they thought Cooper was promised by Lamar Hunt.

The timing of these “Cooper unhappy” reports is interesting as it comes right on the heels of another high priced foreign player signing.  Long has the US domestic player suffered contractually when compared to the “big name” foreign players that come into the league.  The reports of $400,000 for Duilio Davino surly don’t make the average US player happier about their situation?

So is Cooper Jr genuinely unhappy?  No I don’t believe so.  But he, or his morel likely his “people”, wants a new contract.  Sometimes this is how these things work.

Glenn Davis is such a spare Houston homer.

just like Ives is a New York homer…I don’t know which one is worse sometimes actually…probably more Davis than Ives…

Make total sense to me. Cooper is such a CLASSY guy. We got to now him on a slightly more personal level over the summer — in that he would say hi to my 11-yr-old and ask how things were going when we came out to watch the practices, and she got comfortable enough to just run up an give him a hug, if she saw him before or after practices.

It would break her heart if he were unhappy enough to go to Houston!

P.S. I hadn’t said anything to her, but since she reads 3rd Degree, I’ll have to explain what was going on.

I was under the impression that promises made to Cooper were from Hitch, not Hunt. Chances are Lamar knew nothing about any “promises” and had he known they would have been honored, wether in writing or not.

The fans and the franchise both want Cooper to become the center piece of Dallas soccer and neither the fans nor the team would have a problem paying him as such. The brass ring is here for the taking. It’s time for him to be the man. If he doesn’t he has no one to blame but himself, because everyone is in his corner.

[...] A Kenny Cooper update. I reported a couple days ago that KC was upset in the Big D but apparently that isn’t the case. [...]

Just give him the money you promised FCD so we don’t have more of this. …..Every player have to go through this every time? Kind of embarrassing.

why would we pay him big bucks? Everyone knows that he is just here to get playing time so he can move back to Europe.

coop may be a good guy but we know is motives. Be quiet and play hard and you will get your wish Coop.

Thats every players goal though. Work hard in MLS make a name for your self and then go over seas. Thats what Adu did and thats what they are all doing.
