FCD News Recap

Yesterday 3nOut asked me for a scouting report on Davino. I must confess that I don’t really watch mexican clubs unless they are involved in the Copa Libertadores or the Copa Sudamericana. The last time I paid close attention to Club America for an extended period of time was when they signed Ivan “Boom Boom” Zambrano. Needless to say, I’m not in the best position to give an accurate scouting report. My recollection of Davino’s game from his time on the Mexican National team is that he is a solid 1 v 1 defender, positionally sound, strong physical defender, and he is good coming forward on set pieces. However, it has been a while since he has been on the national team.

This signing intrigues me. The guy has tons of experience. Has been competing at a very high level as recently as December as the captain of one the super clubs in Mexico. There is no doubt that he would be a valuable addition to the club. This signing doesn’t address the hole FCD has on the right side of the defense, but in theory they could even play a yet to be drafted rookie on the right side if they have Davino provding leadership to the back line.

Some people have mentioned that they think of this being the second coming of Greg Vanney to FC Dallas. I think a better analogy is Dallas moving Richard Mulrooney to make room for Juan Toja. Mulrooney still has plenty to contribute as we saw last season and everybody in Houston is happy to have him, but in Dallas nobody questions the wisdom of that move.

Davino eyes FC Dallas
Former Club América and Mexico defender Duilio Davino met with FC Dallas officials Monday as both parties aim to get a deal done ahead of the 2008 season.

Davino, 31, who was released by América last month after a decade with the Mexican team, was a guest of FC Dallas for the InterLiga games at Frisco on Sunday.

While there he admitted interest from both sides.

His signing would do Dallas good; it is starved for experience in the back line.

Also, UAG Tecos midfielder Said Godínez, 32, told Mexican media he has offers from two MLS teams, which he refused to identify. He hopes to get the OK from Tecos management to leave the team.

Wondering out loud, but does anyone think a Davino signing would be a push more to a 3 man back line? Or as Chamo alludes to, compensation for the loss of Goodson?

If SM moves to a 3 in back:
    Wagner/C.Gbandi — Davino — Moor

    4 in back:
    Wagner/C.Gbandi — Davino — Moor — TBD/Rhine

Gbandi will be make available to a Swedish team and Moor will stay wide as he now does with the national team. Not saying that’s the way it should be but that is the way it is!

Parry, keep in mind Gbandi catching on in Europe is not guaranteed. He has tried it before, and has always wound back in MLS.

The scouting report makes sense. I really hope this guy is a good a possibility as he seems — not fast but experienced and a leader . . .

The duNord website called his a “dirty player” (but how does HE know?). Discussion on the Club America Big Soccer page say he did not play well this past season (i guess he’s gotten slower, or something), but, yet, he was the team’s captain, and (from the FCD UTube press conference, it sounds like Davino wants a change from living in Mexico City (it also sounds like he did have offers from other Mexican clubs). Now, I’ve never been to Mexica City, but it used to be/is the most populated city in the world and had/has the problem that go along with that . . . so it certainly sounds credible that HE initiated the possible move here to MLS and FCD.

He seems to be promising, but after the Denilson thing . . . just get it right, FCD!!
