Trade Rubble
December 13th, 2007 . 9:12 pm . By: Buzz CarrickYes, a trade for Ruiz to LA almost went down… Here’s what I have been able to learn from my sources (FCD and otherwise), some of whom are very close to this deal. What was reported by Goff was true (not that there is any reason to doubt him); FCD had lined up a trade with LA, Ruiz for Cannon. FCD would then send Cannon to DC for Boswell plus allocation money and a second round pick in 2009. As you probably know by now the trade was all the way to the MLS approval level (all MLS trades have to be approved by MLS HQ) before DC backed out at the 11th hour and sent Boswell to Houston for Wells. I’m not breaking any news there, but I did confirm all that from the FCD end. Here’s some additional information that may be of interest. 1. According to our sources the Ruiz to LA deal was NOT rejected by MLS because LA would have three DPs (Ruiz and Donovan are grandfathered in for 2008). Rather DC balked at Cannon (cost and reputation?) and instead opted for the younger player with a longer career in Wells. 2. FCD has talked to multiple teams about Ruiz. We have strong sources on at least two, and strong insider rumors on two others. I imagine there are more. 3. Many trades fall apart. This was not the first trade on the FCD table this winter that didn’t happen, not even the first with Ruiz involved. It’s just the one that just leaked. 4. Ruiz isn’t unhappy. Ruiz in fact likes Dallas and likes his life here. I have said before I am in favor of moving Ruiz, but I’m not sure Boswell was what I wanted in return. Although I’m not a big fan of Boswell’s game. Certainly he would have plugged the hole created by the loss of Goodson. That’s what Houston did, sending their keeper of the future in Wells to DC to replace their loss of Cochrane. (Would you give up Burse for Boswell? Me neither.) I concede the allocation and 2nd round pick combined with Boswell would have been good value for Ruiz, so it comes down to how much one likes Boswell. Part of the key to moving Ruiz will be the value and ability of the player FCD signs to replace him. It’s a virtual certainly a Ruiz replacement won’t come inside the league. As a side note to that I just found out that Morrow is skipping the College Cup and is instead going to Europe. Stay tuned as this story develops, we certainly haven’t seen the last of the moves this winter. 12 Comments Comments RSS TrackBack Identifier URI Leave a comment |

juicy! so, carlos may still end up getting traded. i just hope FCD is looking for players that can come right in and contribute instead of receiving picks and young guys a year or 2 away.
btw, who exactly is morrow scouting in europe? is it a specific person, or a group of guys?
If we trade Ruiz (and i hope we do) then IMO we need Artie to stay around unless we find a replacement for Ruiz. If neither of those happens then i think we are in trouble offensively
Just read this morning on Bernardo Fallas blog that Boz “wasn’t sure of” coming to Dallas.

Maybe I’m a little defensive, but any ideas on why he would feel that way? He doesn’t like the team? He doesn’t like Morrow? Not enough hot women? Or, perhaps something as simple as he didn’t think the deal was going to go through?
I find it amusing that Boswell is one of the 50 most eligible bachelors and only makes 30k a year. As we all know, not many super hot women are going to date a man who makes 30k.
NFM, maybe he just meant going from a very winning DC team to Dallas who isn’t at the same level (yet?). Houston winning two cups in a row is certainly a nice place to get traded.
[...] 3rd Degree had a decent piece today on player movement in and out of Big D. The “out” part of that seems the firmer: seems like they’re shopping Carlos Ruiz [...]
I am a little shocked to see that Chris Albright was not part of this trade. I would rather have Albright at RB then Boswell at CB.
I hope we keep Ruiz
ruiz doesn’t seem to have that fire. or, maybe it was a combination of his fire (lack there of) and the people that couldn’t set him up properly. w/ all the young, talented forwards we have, i say we get the most for his value while we still can. taht way, it will free us up from his contract. then, maybe it’s time to get a REAL DP.
I just always see him rise when it counts… when all the rest of our players fold in the playoffs, he scores. He always scores.

Well said- I can’t find any argument for that. As far as the regular season goes though, it’s frustrating to watch a player of that caliber flop and lose the ball ALL GAME LONG.
Too true, but in MLS only the playoffs matter
