120 Fahrenheit: Ruiz Opted, Denilson Maybe

December 7th, 2007 . 11:21 am . By: Buzz Carrick

The Dallas Morning News today quoted Steve Morrow saying FC Dallas picked up Carlos Ruiz’s option and “hopes” to bring back Denilson at a lower number.  So what does that mean?  I’ll tell you.

First the background info you need.  MLS contract options for 2008 had to be picked up by (on) November 30th and 2007 contracts run through Dec 31st at midnight.  Both player remain FCD 2007 property till Dec 31.

So Ruiz’s option has been picked up.  If FCD did not pick up the option Ruiz would be a free agent and could sign with any club in the world that wanted him.  MLS clubs would not be able to sign him because FCD would own his MLS rights.  A MLS team could trade for those rights, but would have to re-negotiate a new deal with Carlos. They would be competing to do so on the world wide soccer market and that would make it very difficult to keep Carlos for a good value number unless he really wanted to go to a specific place.  Like LA perhaps.

Letting Ruiz’s option slide would have limited the places FCD could trade him and the value in return.  By picking up Ruiz’s option the player has no choice but to play for FCD, or whatever team they trade him to.  He could of course retire or hold out and demand a loan/trade.  However contractually he would be bound to MLS.  So it’s a move designed to keep Ruiz’s trade value high for FCD, or perhaps even keep him themselves if it comes to that.

“Hoping to bring back Denilson cheaper” means his contract option was not picked up by FCD for 2008.  FCD had a way out and if they had picked up the option would be locked into Denilson for over $1mil.  By letting Denilson’s contract option pass, they have in effect made him a free agent Dec 31st.  Denilson will be free to sign with anyone he wishes.

By making this public statement FCD is either attempting to lessen the PR hit of Denilson being a “bust” or perhaps they really do expect him to be interested in staying at a cut price.  Do you think Denilson would come back for $400k, half of what he was making this year that was supposedly a discount already?  Remember that he was expecting over $1mil in 2008.

Would you want Denilson back for $400k?  I sure wouldn’t. I didn’t see a player worth more than $200.  Heck, I didn’t see a player worth more than Toja and his $100.  So there’s the bar, is he better than Toja, would you take Denilson back for $100.  Ok sure, I might.  I might even go to $150k.. maybe.  Toja does deserve a raise after all.  But then one wonders if Denilson would be A. Happy and B. give enough of a crap to get fit and put in real effort.  To me the answer would clearly be no.

Will FCD’s owners and front office pay $400k?  They might actually.  They were the ones pushing this deal in the first place and they are the ones who continue to use him for publicity and marketing.  Would Denilson take it?  Probably not.

But in my opinion, if Denilson is on this team in 2008 it will reveal a flaw in whoever is making the final decisions at FCD.  Denilson was never right for this league and he has clearly demonstrated he still isn’t right for this league.  Re-signing him means marketing and sales (a.k.a. hype) take precedence over the team on the field.  Trying to force Denilson into this team damaged it last season and ruined the great team that was being built.  I for one hope he is not here.

    The Ruiz thing makes sense.

    As for Dneilosn . . .
I would HOPE that they don’t re-sign him. Everything you have stated about him is everything I felt as I watched this team in the last part of the season. And being an admitted Toja fan, I want to see FCD build a better team/midfield WITHOUT Denilson’s distraction. The team should not have to mesh with him. They should all be able, I would hope, to mesh with each other . . .

I think Morrow made a statement when he played the 11 he did in the first playoff game. And THAT group (the 10 that are left, anyway) is the one I hope he builds on . . .

If FCD resigns him, they will hear from me exactly what I think.

    Sooooo, when will we know . . . not until January . . .?

This is the ONLY way I would take him back

    Ricardino Coooper
    Toja
    Denilson AA
    Serioux Richetti
    Wagner Moor Yi
    Burse

Dax as the super sub (unfortunartly)

Toja needs to be the one in the attacking mid spot, and if Steve could keep a formation and stick with it. I see FCD using Denilson as a P.R.

    Buzz,

Has anyone looked at ticket sales? Did Denilson actually sell more tickets?

Someone at the front office needs to have the long-term perspective that WINNING sells tickets better than a player. Beckham being the only exception in MLS & Denilson isn’t anywhere near the brand that Beckham processes.

signing denilson would take away playing time from the rest of the guys who are actually deserving to play. first, he definitely won’t start. second, would you allow him to take mins from dax, marco, wally or some of the talented MF we have? reports suggested he didn’t show anything in Qatar before we picked him up…i don’t think it’s gonna change here. save that spot for one of the latin players we scouted.

Don’t be so quick to judgment. Eight games played at the tail-end of the year is not enough to convict anyone of not being MLS or FCD worthy. I think the FO has a good opportunity to force Denilson to favorable contract terms. One full year at $400k for a world known footballer ain’t bad. Denilson has a world cup and a spanish club cup. He has more technical skill than anyone on FCD’s roster. And he is only 30 years old. He needs a real chance to make an impact and show that he belongs here.

If this team doesn’t go out and get some players they will surely miss the playoffs in 2008. Ruiz will be in LA next season, Denilson in Asia and Serioux in Canada.

  7. Comment by Buzz Carrick on December 7, 2007 7:44 PM

Mark, I have not looked at actual ticket numbers, but my impression is there was no bump in ticket sales. I will certainly acknowledge a bump in FCD media coverage due to Denilson both domestically and internationally.

“Don’t be so quick to judgment. Eight games played at the tail-end of the year is not enough to convict anyone of not being MLS or FCD worthy. ”

Um . . . I beg to differ. For that price, he should have had a NOTICABLE impact by at least the 3rd or 4th game. Instead, FCD’s best game in the last part of the season was Playoff Game #1 — WITHOUT Denilson.

Buzz has explained it very well in his comments (under the comments section) here:

I want to see more of Dax next season — not Denilson.

    buzz,

i read on the FCD blog that marco went on a scouting trip to argentina. have you, perhaps, spoken to him for some insight on players? i know it probably wouldn’t be wise to post scouting reports for fear of another team checking in, but how about a little morsel. any viable interests out there?

Denilson has flunked out of Spain, France, Saudi Arabia, and is on the verge of flunking our of MLS. I don’t see that there is going to be any market for him and he probably sees that to. I think his future will come down to quality of life. Does he want to live in the US or in Brazil? If he likes it here, I could see him staying for $150k – $300K. I would not mind seeing him stay here for that type of money as long as the contract is incentive based if it is on the higher end of that spectrum.

    hutchtx,

if you think we won the first playoff for any reason other having a healthy goodson you are sadly mistaken.

  13. Comment by Letts on December 8, 2007 2:20 PM

    Tex,

You’re right. We don’t win that game without Goodson. We also don’t win it without Sala making two point-blank saves on DeRo and Ching.

Denilson is another Hitchcock bust. He needs to stop thinking he’s some kind of soccer genius and realize he’s here to sell tickets. His messing with the team played a role in dropping a first-place team down to third place

  14. Comment by 3nOut on December 8, 2007 4:25 PM

since someone brought up hitchcock, i was wanting to know a little more about him. like, what’s his soccer background? is it pretty extensive, or is he more of the management/ marketing type front office guy?

  15. Comment by hutchtx on December 8, 2007 5:08 PM

“if you think we won the first playoff for any reason other having a healthy goodson you are sadly mistaken.”

I give lots of credit to Goodson, but I also give credit to Sala (as mentioned above), who had an AWESOME game, to Ricchetti, and to the whole team playing as a TEAM (without the distraction of having to cover for Denilson) with total heart and passion.

Goodson will be missed, but he’s not irreplaceable.

i dont know much about Hitch, but he is more of a marketing/sales guy than a soccer guy. I think i heard he was the MLS Sales person of the year for several years in a row at DC United and then moved to be Sales Director of the Year at LA Galaxy. To me, that means he needs to focus on selling out PHP.

My feeling is that the Hunts, Clark and Dan, must think that they are some kinda soccer gurus and continue to try and find players to stick right in the middle of the team. Its not working.

  17. Comment by Kevin on December 8, 2007 8:44 PM

Contrarian that i am…i think Denilson could have made a bigger impact if Morrow had modified our scheme to take advantage of his skills. The Cowboys thought TO was a bust…until a coach came along that knew how to use him. Weird, now he is good again.

Bring in a big money player and then not give him a chance to play all seemed foolish to me.

I love Dax and think he is a great guy but he is not a game changer.

you want to sell tickets? in dallas? stop busting in front of the home crowd in the first round of the playoffs. I took my whole extended family and my father in law (he is from Europe) could not remember seeing a more boring game. Denilson was nowhere in sight. Chicago played Blanco, Angel played in NYC, we gave up on our guy cause the coach did not like him after 4 or 5 games.

    Weird.

I would love to see Ruiz stay – he is the real friggin deal. But he needs service from the wings, and FCD hasn’t had that since he’s been here. Think of all the magic goals – the bicycle off the Mina pass for example – it all comes from service off the wings.

Sadly, I don’t see us having wing service any time soon, so the best option for FCD is to trade him. Even having said that, Ruiz is a 30 goal scorer for a team that can play in from the wings. I wish we could feed that goal scoring head case, but FCD doesn’t seem to have the right match.

” think Denilson could have made a bigger impact if Morrow had modified our scheme to take advantage of his skills”

we did that and it backfired on us. if i can remember, morrow tried him at different spots and he failed in all of them. he’s more interested in dancing than playing.

to have better service from the wings, why not try dax out there? i’m fairly new as a soccer fan (2 years – thanks to PS2 and fifa 07), but how big is that of a position change from CM to the wings? it appears you have to defend a whole lot more.

“you want to sell tickets? in dallas? stop busting in front of the home crowd in the first round of the playoffs. . .”

Excuse me, but we WON that game (the home game). I attended games all season, and to me, that was probably the most exciting game — because we beat Houston. The bust came in Houston . . . and if you remember, NO ONE predicted Dallas would win; yet, we gave Houston the most trouble. The only playoff game that even went to OT was that second playoff game . . . so, whatever . . . :???:

3nOut, Ferruzzi did go down and he is back. But I have not spoken to him since he got back as I am out of town as well. I will try and see what I can learn when I get a chance to speak to him or Morrow at the College Cup.

  22. Comment by Paladius the Seeker on December 9, 2007 3:01 PM

Picking up Ruiz’ option was the only intelligent thing to do.

Next, Denilson has got to go, period. Good on corners, yes, but so is Dax. Not confident enough to make a strong contribution on dead balls. No nose for the goal!!! None whatsoever.

This team needs a quality, fast-paced attacking midfielder who can tee it up for Carlos.

…And I still think that Guevara could work, although I can’t stand the guy. (Sometimes, you just have to take it on the chin for the team).

  23. Comment by Sonny on December 10, 2007 2:54 AM

Can’t we look to our partner clubs, Tigres and CAP, for a “quality, fast-paced attacking midfielder” , or are they out of our price range ?

I don’t know if Club Atletico Paraneanse has an attacking midfielder, but I read in a forum that Tigres are letting theirs go.

I think Barcelona SC of Ecuador is the first club to attempt to sign Walter Gaitan so far.

Should FCD give him a look ?

  24. Comment by twotone on December 10, 2007 12:11 PM

do i need to say Daniel Luduena again? please can we take a look at him. Or Luis Landin from Pachuca.

  25. Comment by soccerfan on December 10, 2007 5:28 PM

Denilson was horrible for the team. I think we did worse with him. I hope he goes…and we get another great south american player like Toja.

  26. Comment by Ivan on December 10, 2007 6:04 PM

Denilson is the real deal. How many world cups has any other player in MLS won? He’s probably the best player in America. You want him to start winning games instantly.(It’s a team sport) You make us sound like LA..One player should win us cups. That’s not true. He’s never heard of MLS or any of the other players. It takes longer or a better coach. The real bust is Morrow. I go to all the home games and as soon as Denilson was singed started to travel an the true embarrassment is the coaching. Denilson is worth every penny. You have to give him more time. I really hope he goes to another team and comes back and beats us OVER AND OVER and FCD will loose another loyal fan.

Parrish…I’m reading similar reports in two other Guatemalan websites.

please post Ruiz’ facebook link or user name. I’d like to check it out.

  31. Comment by Buzz Carrick on December 12, 2007 9:00 PM

Ruiz is always “unhappy” when a team is looking to trade him.

Alex, the Guatemalan websites are getting the info from the same place the facebook page is. Every winter Ruiz, or his buddies, tell someone he is going back to LA. Just cause Ruiz or his friends says he is going to LA doesn’t mean he is going to LA.

There has been some discussion between the two teams. But as of today none of my sources have a sniff of a done deal.

  32. Comment by Alex Hernandez on December 12, 2007 10:37 PM

Thanks Buzz. i just read something on Yahoo Sports saying that the deal fell through…thanks for keeping us up to date.
