Coach Pay

November 28th, 2007 . 4:28 pm . By: Buzz Carrick

I’ve said on several occasions that FCD’s head coaching gig was one of the lowest paid in the league, but I’ve never been able to back it up with numbers.  The great Frank Dell’Apa has finally backed me up with numbers.  To make a long story short here’s the list.

Rudd Gullit (LA) = $4 Mil over 3 years = $1.33 Million a year.
Bruce Arena (NY) = $600,000 a year, $1.2 Mil buyout.
Dominic Kinear (Hou) = $250,000
Frank Yallop (SJ) = $210,000
Juan Carlos Osorio (Chi) > $200,000
Mo Johnston (TFC) > $200,000
 Jason Kreis (RSL) > $200,000
Sigi Schmid (Clb) > $200,000
Curt Onalfo (KC) < $200,000
Preki (CUSA) < $200,000
Tom Soehn (DCU) < $200,000
Fernando Clavijo (Col) < $200,000
Steve Morrow (FCD) < $200,000
Steve Nicol (NE) = $175,000

No wonder Preki is rumored to be interested in that NY Red Bull job.

A coach who makes 3 MLS Cup finals in a row and wins the US Open Cup is the lowest paid coach in the league. That’s disgusting.

Dang . . . that seems as unfair as some of the player salaries. Does that make Gullit and Arena’s replacement Designated Coaches?

Did Yallop leave 1.33 mill in LA to go to SJ and make 210,000?

Did Sigi blow it all on donuts?

On a more serious note, the one that surprises me the most is Nicol. Lowest paid but one of the better coaches I think.

Nathan – There is nothing that shows us that Nicol is the lowest paid. We know several coaches maker less than $200k but we don’t know that they make more than $175k. Not that Clavijo or KSE would ever confirm it but the word on the street that Clavijo made $80k in the first year of his contract at the Rapids.
