Goodson Picked by San Jose
November 21st, 2007 . 4:42 pm . By: Buzz CarrickFrank Yallop chose FCD’s Clarence Goodson with the second pick in the San Jose Earthquakes expansion draft despite the player being out of contract. Well I blew it. I never thought Goodson would be picked for a bunch of reasons that aren’t important to get into now. Suffice it to say I put more value in some things that Yallop did. FCD’s Defender of the year heads to the Bay in MLS terms but is a free agent at year’s end as far as the rest of the world in concerned.. As I had indicated before Goodson may be looking to make a jump to Europe after his strong year. One wonders how hard it till be to sign Goodson who will likely demand a higher salary if he agrees to stay both for his strong play and the cost of living for California. “A lot of thought and talking went in to our protected list, and a lot of tough decisions had to be made,” said FC Dallas Head Coach Steve Morrow. “It is disappointing for me to lose any player, and naturally, I’m disappointed to lose Clarence. Clarence is a great guy and we’ll miss him. We all wish him the very best in his next venture. We will continue to work tirelessly to make the required improvements to our roster in the weeks ahead”. FCD will certainly be in the market for a center back to lead the back four, which we had previously discussed. The loss of Goodson makes it a virtual certainty someone will be coming in. The San Jose Earthquakes, who enter Major League Soccer as the league’s 14th team in 2008, today selected FC Dallas defender Clarence Goodson in the 2007 MLS Expansion Draft. San Jose chose the maximum of one player from 10 MLS teams, with three teams not having any player selected (Colorado, Kansas City, and Real Salt Lake). Each of the 13 MLS teams protected 11 roster players from being available to be selected in the draft, with FC Dallas leaving 17 players unprotected. Dallas selected Goodson with the 7th overall pick in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft out of the University of Maryland. In four seasons with the club, the 25-year old defender appeared in 74 regular season games, scoring three goals. In 2007, Goodson was voted as the team’s Defender of the Year after starting 27 regular season games as a center back. 23 Comments Comments RSS TrackBack Identifier URI Leave a comment |

Just another bad move by FCD to leave Clarence unprotected.
Today just isn’t FCD’s day. Losing Goodson and the possibility of losing Rhine as a utility and Papi altogether… Just not a good day. I really hope Morrow’s got a few tricks up his sleeve.
Funny Steve said he thought Clarence would be too expensive, but I seem to recall reading somewhere that Yallop intended to keep most of these players and that the was looking for affordable talent.
I know most seem to be real upset about this, but really I dont see it being that huge of a deal. The guy is going to be a free agent, and if the jumps to Europe, then it would have seemed silly to protect him. Dallas could still bring Goodson back, though that does seem unlikely. Unless Goodson is with San Jose next year, which I actually think is doubtful, then this is a non-issue.
From San Jose’s standpoint, this seems to be a decent gamble to try and bring in a good (not great) CB.
If I was Goodson, I would seriously look at Europe no matter what.
Wow, San Jose already has one of the best back fours in the league.
Buzz, do you think Yallop picked Goodson without any idea whether he would sign with him? Or do you think a deal was in place?
I would think Yallop must have had some information about what it would take to get Goodson to stay with SJ. It’s too big a risk to take him otherwise IMO.
I think that the HO needs to address the fan base real soon cocerning where they are going from here to strengthen this team. Buzz, I appreciate all the insight you give into Steve Morrow’s philosophy and thought process, but it is still conjecture, right? The reality is that we need help in the back line and we just lost our best defender. The fact is that this is unsettling even to the reasonable observer and leaves a big question mark regarding the team for next year.
Jay, I talk to Morrow about once a week, only a small part of this is conjecture. Most of it is based on what the coach said, as well as his staff. I also took into account how the league works, what players tell me, and what my sources say FCD is doing behind the scene.
I tell you what- I learned last year to give Morrow time to show his cards from a personnel point of view. By the time of the expansion draft last year FCD had lost their whole midfield and I didn’t understand how the team had any chance of going forward. By the time late March rolled around, we had Ricchetti and Toja.
We won’t know what Morrow’s final answer is until opening day, the way this league works. I’m willing to give Morrow a pass until then.
Plus, I have to throw in my two cents on the comment about San Jo having the best back four in the league. I think Ryan Cochrane will be exposed without Eddie Robinson next to him to cover.
If Morrow can upgrade the back line and find us a forward, I’ll be happy.
And Clarence, I loved watching you play for four seasons. You’ll be missed, but good luck in San Jo or Europe.
I didn’t think it possible, but it now looks quite likely that the team will have an even worse defense next season. Nice job, Steve-o.
I’m proud of Clarence, he left his hot-headed play behind, focused, and had a great year in 2007. He deserves a pay increase and if you’re going to help build a team Yallop would be a great coach to follow. Good luck to Clarence wherever he finally lands.
With Clarence out of contract FCD probably would have lost him anyway. But they should have taken the chance, and now they are stuck with AA. Hopefully he learns from Clarence and gets his act together. Consistent high performance over a whole season is better than flashes of brilliance marred by random acts of stupidity.
Whew. At least we still have Saragosa.
I will echo Jamie’s comments. I read nothing but doom and gloom at the beginning of the season on this site. Then came River Platte North. Gee, the midfield was much improved.
Our D is neither athletic nor fast. In keeping with SMs philosophy, look for the back line to be upgraded with players who can both cover and recover.
And good luck to Clarence in Europe.
Buzz…there is a player that was just released by UAG in the Mexican League. I’ve followed him for many years and this guy is fast and does nothing but perfect crosses and could be had for a reasonable amount either as a purchase or loan. he would be a perfect fit for players like Ruiz, Cooper or anyone that FC may have in 2008. how can we we get Morrow to look into it. The guy is getting old but he never stops running on the field, hustles at every ball and knows his main job is assists
his name is Rodrigo “Pony” Ruiz
hum… well if you know the player you would just tell him to send a tape and resume to FCD.
Outside of that I suppose you could just try sending FCD some stuff on him, video on line or something… Not really sure who you would send it to. If you have some you could try mailing it to morrow at the team office I suppose.
bye clarence! i am sad you are leaving dallas but i will follow you in sj!
The dirty pictures Saragosa has on Morrow must really be something. Has to rival Tubgirl. WTF is that guy still on the roster? There was no reason that it had to come down to a Moor vs Goodson decision. At least not this year.
RP, by rule only one SI could be exposed. FCD chose to expose Denilson.
I know that. If it’d been up to me I’d have released Saragosa before the draft. With Serioux back at his natural position, there is just no need for him here. I suppose maybe there is some sort of contractual reason that he couldn’t be released (like with Denilson)? But if it came down to Saragosa or Goodson (even unsigned), then that’s what I’m complaining about.
Saragosa was guaranteed for 07.
Also teams couldn’t waive a player prior to the expansion draft.
So Saragosa vs Goodson wasn’t really a choice FCD could make.
Morrow never thought that Yallop would pick up a player out of contract but that’s why he’s won so much, he’s smarter than the other coaches. Morrow knew goodson was one of his top 3 players but just tried to play the expansion game and lost big time. Of course if goodson goes to europe morrow will look less dumb.
