FCD Expansion Draft List

November 19th, 2007 . 8:17 pm . By: Buzz Carrick

FC Dallas has released their protected list for Wednesday’s expansion draft.  Each MLS team was allowed to protect eleven players, leaving the majority of the roster exposed.  DP players turned out to only need protection in certain circumstances that did not include FCD’s Denilson.  The San Jose Earthquakes will return to MLS in 2008 as the League’s 14th team and will begin to shape their roster on Wednesday, November 21 with the 10-round Expansion Draft (12 p.m. CT).

By way of comparison, I missed two names on our prediction of the list.  The first, Saragosa, we said would be protected if Denilson did not need to be, which is what occurred. The second, Ricardinho, I believe I either underestimated FCD’s valuation of him, or far more likely, I didn’t take into account the almost certainly required protection of him in the agreement with CAP although I did mention it..  They certainly would not want to see him go to another club.

Dax McCarty, as predicted, has been promoted to the senior roster and removed from Generation adidas protection.

Here’s the list of protected and unprotected players.

FCD’s Protected List

Goalkeeper: Ray Burse

Defender: Drew Moor, Adrian Serioux

Midfielders: Arturo Alvarez, Marcelo Saragosa, Pablo Ricchetti, Juan Toja, Dax McCarty

Forwards: Kenny Cooper, Carlos Ruiz, Ricardinho

 FCD’s Unprotected List

Goalkeeper: Dario Sala

Defenders: Andrew Daniels, Michael Dello-Russo, Chris Gbandi, Clarence Goodson, Bobby Rhine, David Wagenfuhr, Alex Yi.

Midfielders: Sebastian Botero, Denilson, Sandy Gbandi, Scott Jones, Aaron Pitchkolan, Chase Wileman

Forwards: Roberto Mina, Dominic Oduro, Abe Thompson

Notes

San Jose may select a maximum of ONE player from each of the 13 MLS team’s unprotected player list during the 10-round draft (three teams will not have a player selected). The following FCD players are available for selection:

Each team could only protect 11 players, and could only make one Senior International player available for the Expansion Draft. FCD protected Senior International’s Ruiz (Guatemala), Saragosa (Brazil), Ricchetti (Argentina), and Serioux (Canada).

Forward Abdus Ibrahim, defender Blake Wagner, and midfielder Anthony Wallace are currently classified as Generation adidas players and thus not eligible to be selected. Midfielder Dax McCarty graduated from the program at the end of the 2007 season will count as Senior Roster players moving forward.

FCD should have protected Goodson before Saragosa. Goodbye Clarence it has been a nice journey.

  2. Comment by Rex Kramer on November 19, 2007 9:51 PM

Hilltopper, Saragosa had to be protected, unless you’d prefer we ketp Denilson? Only one SI can be left unprotected.

Buzz, can you clarify the circumstances that meant we weren’t forced to protect Denilson as a DP please? Was it something to do with playing time?

see ya clarence, the team defender of the year

  4. Comment by Jonas on November 19, 2007 10:36 PM

i think it’s a good coy of FCD because San Jose would probably have to pay his contract and i doubt Denilson would take a pay cut. with that said there is a possiblity of then not picking him at all.
it would be nice to be one of the 3 teams not to have a pick.

    Please, oh please take Denilson.

I agree that we’ve seen the last of Badson. He’s either off the Europe or SJ but certainly no more Hoops for him, good luck Clay.

  7. Comment by Nathan on November 20, 2007 6:43 AM

I think it’s possible that Goodson was left unprotected because his contract is up. I’m not sure but perhaps there’s a certain amount of uncertainty attached to that, that would make a coach shy away from picking him. Houston left Eddie Cochrane unprotected, so he’s not the only good unprotected defender out there.

I agree with Jonas, the Denilson move is simply a hot potato game that nobody wants to catch… at least not at the current asking price. I still believe the guy has great potential, but he needs to re-assess his true value to the MLS.

  8. Comment by Buzz Carrick on November 20, 2007 6:51 AM

Rex, sure it had to do with no-trade clauses and protections. Basically if the player’s contract said he couldn’t go somewhere else, the team would have to protect him. Denilson didn’t have such protection so FCD could expose him.

  9. Comment by Nathan on November 20, 2007 6:56 AM

I’m not sure how MLS trading etc.. works.. but I’m thinking that you will still want to protect players that you potentially want to trade, if you think that they have good trade value.

My thoughts are that we did not protect C Gbandi because even though we may want to replace or trade him for something better, given that his salary is 100k+ and some of his recent PUBLIC performances, he may be a difficult player to trade.. on the other hand, if you give him away for free, Yallop may think that he can still pick up a talented player in Gbandi, justify his salary and get the guys focused for 90mins.

Can’t believe we put Abe on the list. I wonder if that was just down to running out of players to protect. He’s relatively cheap compared to output and seems to have the right commitment level.

As far as Alvarez and Ruiz – I think they are two people who FCD may consider trading but I think these guys have good trading value – you can’t give them up as freebies.

  10. Comment by Pegasus on November 20, 2007 7:01 AM

Really only protected one defender as Serioux is really a d-mid. Kind of shows what the coaching staff thought of the defense and spotlights what will most likely be the emphasis in the off season.

  11. Comment by FriscoFan on November 20, 2007 8:54 AM

I agree with Pegasus – the defense is the top priority in the off season. That plus a mobile striker.

  12. Comment by Toffee on November 20, 2007 12:41 PM

Buzz – what are the implications for SJ of taking Gbandi vs. taking Goodson (salary, other considerations, etc.)? They seem to be the most likely candidates for SJ. Too bad Goodson is on there, no matter what he would be in the top 5 defenders on our roster even if we totally revamped the defense with 3 outstanding defenders. He has started to lead by example, also.

  13. Comment by Buzz Carrick on November 20, 2007 12:52 PM

The main implication is with the contracts. Gbandi has an option that is over $100k. By drafting him SJ would in effect be exercising that option. Gbandi needs a change of scenery, but also has tried to go to Europe a couple times and would need team permission to try again.

Goodson being out of contract, SJ would have to do a new deal with him. That’s a number that could be anywhere depending on how much Goodson wants to play in SJ versus how much he wants to take a shot abroad. Goodson likes Dallas, I don’t know how he would fell about SJ. Also this is probably his best shot to go to Europe and he’s a free agent. I imagine he is at least considering all his options with his agent.

  14. Comment by twotone on November 20, 2007 1:19 PM

perhaps FCD saw more potential in Ricardinho than Abe, with more speed, technical skill, and tactical sense. there is no measure for Abe’s moxie or knack for being in the right spot.

but methinks that protecting Rico has something to do with the CAP partnership and them loaning us a player only to serve him up for the rest of MLS to pick him up. that doesnt sound like part of the original agreement and wouldnt look too good for CAP loaning us other players.

  15. Comment by twotone on November 20, 2007 1:37 PM

As i look at the list, there are some players out there. Here’s my picks:

    R. Nunez (CHV)-contract may be important, there are other options in Burpo, Zotinca, Merlin, Hernandez, Hamilton
Busch (CHI)-Plotkin and Gutierrez other options
Grabavoy (CLB)-he’s as good as gone
Gbandi (FCD)- maybe Abe cuz of lack of forward options on list
Gros (DC)- perfect for wide mid on Yallop team. Nolly is another option
Cochrane (HOU)-saves Goodson for FCD. also watch for Wells and Ashe (surprise)
Holbein (KC)- center back. Guadarrama is a attacking option
    Gray (LA)-can man several spots
Riley (NE)-starting right back with pedigree
Doe (NY)- depends on SI status, but best of limited forward options, Goldthwaite is next

So nobody from COL, RSL, TFC.

Another possibility on Goodson could be a “poison pill” if you will indulge my poor metaphor…

Being a FA, lets say Goodson makes a verbal deal with FCD that even if SJ picks him, he doesn’t sign a deal with them. All he would have to do is wait until January comes around, Goodson says “Thanks, but no thanks” to SJ and signs a FA deal with FCD. FCD doesn’t have to spend a protection slot on Goodson, and Goodson gets a “nice” FA deal with FCD in January, assuming that is his desire. Heck, FCD and/or Clarence may have even told SJ that this was going to be the case.

I have to think that this is a possibility, unless I am missing something in the expansion draft and free agent rules.

  17. Comment by Nathan on November 20, 2007 4:20 PM

twotone – I think Gros is done. I could be wrong, but I thought that he decided he’d had one knock in the head too many.

From what I hear the protective head gear actually provides very little real protection.

  18. Comment by ted on November 20, 2007 4:20 PM

I don’t think that is possible, NFD.
Besides why would Goodson necesssarily want to play in Dallas instead of SJ for a great coach? What was that movie, “show me the money”

  19. Comment by steve on November 20, 2007 4:41 PM

    buzz,
who do you think is going to get selected?

  20. Comment by Skeeter on November 20, 2007 5:08 PM

    Good Stuff Twotone

Here is my list: “people Love lists”
    Preston Burpo – CHV
Connor Casey – Colo – Very Dichio Like
    Ned Grabavoy – Colu
    Brian Carroll – DC
    Willis Forko – RSL
    Cory Ashe – Hou
    Avery John – NE
    Joe Vide – NY
    Kyle Martino – LA
    Dom Oduro – FCD

Before looking at the fill list I thought for sure the Gbandi would be the pick, but there are better options at left back. I fear loosing Birdman

  21. Comment by JC on November 20, 2007 5:18 PM

I also read Gros was done.

Here’s who I would choose to start my franschise:

    Chivas USA – Jorge Flores

    Chicago – Bruno Menezes

    Colorado – Conor Casey

    Columbus – Ned Grabavoy

    Dallas – Clarence Goodson

    DC – Greg Vanney

    Houston – Ryan Cochrane

    Los Angeles – Gavin Glinton

    New England – Andy Dorman

    New York – Kevin Goldthwaite

    Salt Lake – Chris Brown

    Toronto – Andrew Boyens

I know you only get ten, though.

  22. Comment by twotone on November 20, 2007 6:49 PM

i read that Conor Casey just had another ACL surgery. Dorman is outta contract and probably costs too much.

i thought there was a lotta value in Chivas list. Burpo is Canadian and Yallop surely knows the player. he’s started games in the league too. I picked Nunez over him though cuz there is little attacking depth in this draft and there are other experienced keepers so Nunez/Zotinca/Merlin could get picked from Chivas.

i know Glinton seems to be the trendy selection from LA, but ew’ve seen Glinton do nothing for years even though he scored a few goals as a super-sub this season. Yallop actually traded for Kelly Gray this season so he wants the versatile mid. Grabavoy-Gray is solid with Nunez in front of them.

  23. Comment by Buzz Carrick on November 20, 2007 7:57 PM

new found madness, Goodson can’t do what you propose. HE’s only free agent outside MLS. MLS is single entity ownership, which means that even though he is out of contract, someone (currently FCD) still owns his MLS rights. Even out of contract players belong to a team in MLS terms.

Steve, Thompson I think is possible. But nothing would shock me. Gbandi, Goodson, Oduro, Pitch, Mina, Sala, Yi… hell even Denilson wouldn’t shock me.

  24. Comment by NewFoundMadness on November 21, 2007 9:57 AM

ted – in my little scenario, Goodson could have gotten a sweet deal from FCD in exchange for his telling SJ to buzz-off.

buzz – Thanks for the clarification. Darn single entity structure! In this case, it actually closed a nice loophole that FCD could have exploited to keep a player.

  25. Comment by bn on November 21, 2007 10:17 AM

    Buzz,

Is this going to be on match tracker or any other source while it is going down, or will MLS do the usual we will post it later? I guess in fairness to the players selected, they would want to notify them first…

  26. Comment by Miss the Mark on November 21, 2007 12:28 PM

Goodson taken #2 – buh bye to the Bad-son.

  27. Comment by Nathan on November 21, 2007 12:45 PM

Well, the only ones I guessed were Grabavoy, Carroll and Cochrane. I had put Avery John over Riley.

  28. Comment by Skeeter on November 21, 2007 2:17 PM

I sure hope Morrow and Hitch have a plan. The prospect of rolling with a back-line of Gbandi, Yi, Moor & Rhine makes me think ” I wonder what Tenywa Bonseu is up to these days?”

  29. Comment by JC on November 21, 2007 3:05 PM

How about our #2 overall draft pick for Goodson? It’s just so hard to let go…

  30. Comment by Thom on November 21, 2007 3:20 PM

So, this is what depression feels like.

  31. Comment by twotone on November 21, 2007 3:24 PM

as long as they dont call Ryan Suarez back again.

Is that other kid from SMU that ended up playing for PR Islanders available?

  32. Comment by twotone on November 21, 2007 3:32 PM

I guess now Drew Moor can be moved to his natural spot a center back. Wagner on the left and we go find a leader at center back (DP or just strong signing) and Rhine goes back into the first team.

Does Daniels step up? Can Yi play healthy? Who can Pareja find now?

  33. Comment by Letts on November 21, 2007 4:16 PM

Pareja is not going to find anyone for FCD. He’s going to coach the U17s. Sala brought Ricchetti so maybe he can find someone. Whatever happens, I hope Hitchcock isn’t in charge of the new search.

  34. Comment by Buzz Carrick on November 21, 2007 4:16 PM

well I never thought it would be Goodson for various reasons. Frankly I’m surprised.

Yes there is a plan. Not sure if the plan will come off, but there is one.
