Landycakes Helps Dallas
November 18th, 2007 . 8:08 am . By: Buzz CarrickIn an all to far predictable fashion Landycakes Donovan has helped FC Dallas. The MLS board of governors met this weekend and passed what can only be called the Landon Donovan exception and granted non-DP status to three “grandfathered” players who had signed large DP worthy contracts prior to the advent of the DP rule: Landon Donovan, Eddie Johnson, and Carlos Ruiz. You be sure this rule was only brought into effect because of Donovan. The LA Galaxy were going to have to acquire a second DP slot for him and with the need obvious the asking price was going to be too high when the Gals need to rebuild a depleted roster anyway. Getting the non-DP exception for Carlos Ruiz is of benefit to FCD if they chose to pick up Ruiz’s option for 2008 as it would allow FCD to either keep Denilson or pursue another DP. Ruiz’s earned $435,000 guaranteed in 2007, and would likely receive a raise for 2008 if his option is renewed. 6 Comments Comments RSS TrackBack Identifier URI Leave a comment |

Very interesting. Now the only question is, is Ruiz worth the money?
Buzz,
If Ruiz is traded, does the new team benefit from the LD Exception? Is the exception tied to the player and his current contract or to the team?
If this exception is tied to the player, then this could be incredibly valuable. It would then be possible to pick up the extension on Ruiz and then trade him to LA for young players and draft picks. (ALA Herschel Walker to Minnesota for 3 Superbowls!)
Yes, the exemption is tied to the player. At least that’s the way it was explained to me.
That makes Ruiz more enticing to a club that has already has a DP. Chicago or Red Bull what do you have to offer?
Heck thinking further could LA make a play for him? Would Albright and ? be enough?
How about Ruiz to LA for Chris Albright, Mike Randolph, and LA 1st round pick in the draft.
You then let Black Wagner and Randolph battle in the spring for the LB spot.
Wager/Randolph Goodson Moor Albright
Not a bad young back-line to build around.
probably won’t happen with the Galaxy putting Pavon on the protected list, they’re kind of the same player for their respective national teams.
