Ricardo Clark Suspended Nine Games

In addition Houston's midfielder gets fined $10,000 for his kick of Carlos Ruiz.

October 4th, 2007 . By: Buzz Carrick

MLS has suspended Dynamo midfielder Ricardo Clark nine games for kicking Carlos Ruiz during FC Dallas’ match against Houston at Pizza Hut Park last weekend.  In addition MLS fined the player $10,000.

“I have decided that it is necessary to take firm action to reflect the fact that Ricardo Clark’s violent kick to Carlos Ruiz in last weekends game against FC Dallas, while out of character, is unacceptable behavior from an MLS player,” MLS Commissioner Don Garber said. “In taking this action, Major League Soccer is sending a signal that it will not accept reckless and dangerous behavior on its fields. If there is a repeat of this kind of behavior by any MLS player, even firmer sanctions can be expected in the future.”

The nine game suspension includes the normal one game red card suspension and an additional eight games. Clark will sit out the rest of the 2007 regular season and playoffs, and the suspension will continue into 2008 until the nine game total is achieved.

“I hope and believe that Ricardo Clark will reflect on and learn from his mistake and become a better professional as a result,” Garber said.

During the period of the suspension, Clark will in addition not be permitted to play in any exhibition games for his MLS team where admission is charged. His suspension shall not prohibit him, however, from participating in sanctioned international competitions such as the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

I have read all that has been written and seen all the pictures and videos from this
unfortunate incident and still have no
idea what Carlos did to deserve the kick
and the red card…..can someone shed some light?

    Good

Was it long enough? I was expecting them to give him the rest of this season plus half of next season.

At least Garber is consistent, he didn’t give Sala as long of a suspension as I was expecting in that case either.

I imagine that the lower salaries in MLS relative to the other professional sports is an important factor in Garber’s decision making process regarding suspensions. If Garber’s suspensions are too long, these players would have to resort to making a living somewhere else, and the league really can’t afford to loose solid players.

Clarke makes $195k. I agree that the player’s salary should be considered when assessing the fine though.. 10k though is not really devastating for Clarke.. but it will cause him to reflect.

Did we ever find out why Ruiz was red carded?

I would have certainly liked for it to be longer, but I’m pleasantly surprised the length of this one exceeded Sala’s. It’s very definitely justified, and it’s nice to see the right thing was done here.

Can he play in their reserve games? Not specifically mentioned in the decision.

I understand you guys only see it from the fc dallas point of view, but you can’t be so blind as to not notice that ruiz instigated the whole scenario. Sure rico probably shouldn’t have done that, but the truth of the matter is that the fish is done in mls. He’s just getting by on cheap shots every game. Only difference was that before he was scoring. He’ll play one more season, living of the past years. He’s just average at best nowadays. Sorry for the choke job the hoops are doing Again…..but ruiz is part of the reason, not scoring. eh, whatever good luck!……..the hoops will need plenty of it.

Didn’t see the Clark incident so can’t comment on that, other than to say that getting into the head of the opposition is part of the game. Cleary Ruiz has this ability. I thought he had a better than average game on Wednesday. Held possesion well, bringing down long balls and distributing with his back to the goal and a guy or two draped on him. Not necessarily the role he’s most dangerous in, and he didn’t convert on a couple of good chances, but I certainly didn’t see any cheap shots, or for that matter any evidence to suggest that “the fish is done in mls”. From my angle he had a legitimate shot at winning a PK in the 1st half.

    Frank,

Can you please explain and show the evidence that “I understand you guys only see it from the fc dallas point of view, but you can’t be so blind as to not notice that ruiz instigated the whole scenario”?

Just HOW did he instigate it? All one can see in the video from the Telefutura broadcast is Ruiz leaping up (and to me, he appears to be looking at the BALL), Clark going down for some reason . . . that’s the key point, I suppose, but WHAT happened, and was it really intentional? — and then Ruiz falling over him, etc. Isn’t it usually a tangle of bodies on plays like that, with several players all goin for one ball?

    Edit: “going”

  11. Comment by twotone on October 5, 2007 10:11 am

I’m a fan of FCD, but Ruiz had 88 minutes to instigate this with Rico. We all know that he can and will get under someone’s skin and Rico could have retaliated from anything from the entire game. Perhaps those 5 little clips/elbows/shoves/words/kisses from Ruiz throughout the game added up to 1 big kick from Clark……

It doesnt have to be one incident for one. the refs have picked up on it and Ruiz is always a marked man from the beginning of each game, especially for new referees (like the one in this game). they have to discuss Fishy and say watch for the little stuff behind my back or the high elbows on headers or the stepping on feet/ankles at corner kicks. we all see it and the refs do too.

Hey hutchtx, basically twotone explained it as good as i would of. The elbow he threw at robinson earlier got him a yellow card. What i’m trying to say is i have yet to hear anything against ruiz from any hoops fans.(except twotone). The guy has been good, but his time is pretty much up. 7 goals for a forward earning the money he is won’t last to long. the league has figured him out and all he is doing to get by is dirty play. His #’s have been dipping every season. Good luck regardless!!!

Good. Was hoping for at least Sala’s six game suspension. Very happy with this.
Might actually give us a small chance to defeat Houston in the playoffs.

  14. Comment by Chamo on October 5, 2007 1:45 pm

Sorry Frank! You and the rest of the Houston fans are way off base, and all of your arguments are nothing but poor rationalizations for an action that is indefensible.

Every team has players that try to impose their will over their opponent physically, or as you call them “dirty” players when they aren’t wearing the Dynamo Orange. These players get under the skin of their opponents in every single game that they play.

In MLS alone off the top of my head I can name Ruiz, Gutierrez, O’Rourke, A. Moreno, Fred, Garcia, Kovalenko, Franchino, Thomas, Mastroeni, Beckerman, Harmse, and even your precious Robinson. Every team around the world has some players that are more physical than what their opponent what like them to be. And you can bet than more than opponent has felt like retaliating in a similar fashion to the way Clark did, but they did not. The knew where the line was. Clark’s cowardly attack of Ruiz crossed the line. Clark completely blindsided Ruiz when he was in a prone position laying on the ground. Clark’s action was criminal and it makes his motive a moot point.

And concerning my (and other Dallas fan’s) view being tainted by “Dallas” colored glasses, like I mentioned in comment #2. I thought Sala should have received a longer suspension when he crossed the line. Criminal behaviour is criminal behaviour regardless of the color of their jersey.

My feelings about Ruiz are mixed (I’ve only had a year’s experience as an FCD/soccer fan). I don’t care for his dives and exaggerations, but . . .I saw more than just “an elbow to Robinson.” I also saw Robinson giving it back equally, it seemed. My impression, as a fan at that game, was that there was as much “dirty” play from the Houston side (from Robinosn, at least), as from Carlos . . .

Compare that with the game against NE. The impression I got was that they both played fair (outside of a bit of pushing, etc). Ruiz was in that game, too. . . .I respect NE. I can’t say that about Houston after this past game (rivarly aside). I almost brought a a friend of my daughter with us to the Sept 30th game — glad I didn’t!

Anyway, my point is that I still didn’t see anthing to warrant Clark’s reaction, regardless of how much “crap” Ruiz was dishing out throughout the game. I’m sure there was plenty coming from the Houston side, as well.

P.S. Thank you, Chamo! Ditto to what you said.

Listen guys, i’m not a dynamo fan don’t even live in texas. I have been following mls from the start. I’m simply pointing out the obvious. There’s a reason most fans around the league had a good chuckle at what happened to ruiz. Again what rico did was uncool but c’mon, only twotone see’s the reality of it all ?! There is no other player in the league hated most by the fans or players for a reason………..oh and throw in the refs now. Dallas…….colored………glasses…………..oh maybe slightly. Listen you guys hated him when he was in LA, but the shoe is in the other foot know ,right chamo.

  18. Comment by twotone on October 5, 2007 8:15 pm

Hey, I’m just being realistic. I like Ruiz as a player and am glad we have him on the team. I think FCSa problem is the style they play doesnt fit Ruiz’s best style. he is a poacher that relies on service and capitalizes on mistakes. he was best when domeone else opened space for him. FCD doesnt have that now.

oh yeah, FRANK, Dema Kovalenko is the dirtiest player in the league. even his own teammates dont like him. he should be the most hated too, but that might be by the players. he’s broken too many legs to not be.

  19. Comment by frank on October 5, 2007 11:42 pm

It’s all right guys don’t get to crazy. We’ll see next year…………..6………….7………..maybe8 goals, …..40 or 50 dives, elbows, crying, bitching, etc. by the pescadito. But it’s alright because he plays for the HOOPS! vamos richetti carajo!

Frank, with all due respect, this is OUR Hoops website…and since you don’t seem to have a clue on what you are talking about…why don’t you shut the hell up and find your mexican league team website to talk crap or go to your ballet classes more often while we talk about a man’s game here…

Oye Frank, no empezes con maricadas o sin no te pego una putiada por arrimarte por aqui.

N-E ways… Looks like Frank’s butt buddy Clark “hopes to file an official appeal to his suspension early this week.” They should just extend his suspension just to shut him up.
