Denilson’s Here! Why Does it Not Feel All That Great?

August 23rd, 2007 . 5:52 pm . By: Peter Welpton

I know, I know.

I’m a party pooper and a pessimist.

A Brazilian World Cup winner has just joined FC Dallas. Yes, he’s still young and has a bag of tricks that makes the soccer moms go, “Wow!”.

But something doesn’t smell right. Oh, I want it to. But why is a guy with this pedigree here? Now? Just after a year’s spin in ….. Saudi Arabia?

Since 1998 this is the guy’s 6th team, and considering they comprise FOUR different continents, this Denilson gives a whole new meaning to the label – Joureyman.

Man, do ever hope it works and he isn’t a vacationing head case….

Alvarez, Ruiz and Cooper fronting, Ricchetti, Denilson and Toja?

My pants just moved.

I’m glad your the one that said it. I am happy to see that they signed a DP. I think it is really critical for the marketing and the future success of the team, but I was hoping that it would be someone who would be less of a risk. I think it was the right move to make, but there is huge potential of a meltdown.

Here’s a good question what does this do to Dax and Ricardinho :?:

  3. Comment by twotone on August 23, 2007 8:31 PM

Dax is still first off the bench for a tiring player in midfield and Ricardinho is on loan anyway.

The better questions are what happens to Abe/Dominic and, more likely, Mina.

  4. Comment by Matthew on August 23, 2007 8:55 PM

mina has been done for a while if you ask me, Abe has always been a sub when everyone is fit and Dom can go back to being super sub, if you have a talent like Ricardinho even on loan you should use it, and with dax on the bench where do the Assits come from we’ve look a lot better team with Dax back

One thing to point out… recently, Denilson has been quoted in various press reports as saying that he wants to mentor the young Brazilians to play for the game, not for the money, and that he made mistakes in that respect in the past.

Second, no matter how you look at it, dumping Saragosa for Denilson is a massive upgrade in talent added to the roster. We are absolutely a better and more dynamic team because of this change. We needed another attacking player last week against Houston, and now we have him.

The club had salary cap room and chose to use it. For all the criticism of Hunt Sports Group being cheap in the past, we should applaud them for this move. Name recognition, will bring press, will bring out more people. All those people who came for Superliga are sure to come back now.

I share Hitmans trepidation but my fears are also somewhat abated by Morrow’s track record this year. Ricchetti, Toja, Ricardinho. Why would he go after a much more expensive player that isn’t as good as those three?

  7. Comment by Jason S. on August 23, 2007 10:50 PM

Morrow’s only really “move” was Ricardinho, who frankly hasn’t been that impressive. Toja was all Pareja and Ricchetti was all Sala. The one thing Morrow has done is build an incredibly tight lockerroom. Will Denilson share in all-for-one attitude? Time will tell

I am a newbie to the world of soccer (this being my first year to REALLY follow it), but I am exited by this. I trust Morrow to do a thorough scouting (or review of videos) on anyone before that player is signed, so . . . I am hoping that we can put our faith in this, if Morrow wants him.

Now, I’m thinking that the rest of the season could be pretty exciting. For example — we play Chicago on Sept. 20th. That game could have Denilson/Toja, etc. against Chicago’s Blanco . . .

I know we need to see him on the field to know how this will REALLY work out, but . . . I’m still excited!

Those guys may have been *scouted* by Pareja and Sala, but the decision on whether or not to add them to the team was Morrow’s and Hitch’s. So yes, props to the guys for being able to scout good talent, but also props to Morrow/Hitch for (a) being able to recognize it, and (b) signing it to a contract.

When left to his own devices and “evaluation” Hitchcock brought in Shaka and Serioux. Not exactly good moves.

Morrow deserves props for listening to Pareja and Sala on Toja and Ricchetti. A good leader listens. Though anyone with FCD will tell you Morrow wanted Shaka and thought his was the answer to FCD’s MLS Cup prayers. He also traded the best right winger in the league for wounded Serioux.

    correct

[Though anyone with FCD will tell you Morrow wanted Shaka and thought his was the answer to FCD’s MLS Cup prayers. ]
incorrect – it was Clarke that wanted Shaka

[He also traded the best right winger in the league for wounded Serioux.]
correct, but O’Brien was a lockerroom cancer of the highest proportions and was producing little to nothing for the team. Trading him for anything was the right move.

    – Ask people closer to the situation, Peter. Morrow wanted Shaka badly. He only backed away from the deal *after* it became politically smart to do so.

“correct, but O’Brien was a lockerroom cancer of the highest proportions and was producing little to nothing for the team. Trading him for anything was the right move.”

    – Trading Ronnie was the right move. Trading him for what so far has amounted to a drain on both the cap and the defense was wrong. Lots of teams would have been happy to give us something for Ronnie. Unfortunately, Morrow picked the wrong acquisition while making the right move. Just because we have talented players that act like jerks and need to be moved — ROB, Nunez — doesn’t mean we shouldn’t get value for them in return

that makes no sense… Morrow was an assistant when they bought Shaka.

Morrow was probably familiar with Hislop (when Hislop was in his prime) from playing in England, so it would not surprise me if he was on board or even lobbied for his signing. But, So what?
Show me the GM or Manager that has never made a mistake in player acquisition. They all have their hits and misses. You have to look at their entire body of work. Was Serioux Morrow’s failure or a failure of our crack medical staff? All in all, I think SM has been right on the mark with the moves made both on and off the pitch. I am going to trust him on this one.

  15. Comment by Paul on August 24, 2007 3:38 PM

Why wouldn’t it make sense? You don’t think assistant coaches play a role in player acquisitions? Look at Papi and Toja. Papi urged Morrow to sign Toja just like Morrow was pushing for Shaka. What doesn’t make sense.

I inferred from your original post that you meant that it was Morrow’s decision to sign Hislop. (“…Morrow wanted Shaka and thought his was the answer to FCD’s MLS Cup prayers…”)

If all you meant was that he was supportive of signing, then ok maybe he was, but then I don’t understand why that is an issue for you to criticize him.

    Paul,

your information from the “people closer to the situation” is incorrect. Morrow never pushed for Shaka. Look elsewhere on Clarke’s staff, and it wil become clear who pushed for Shaka.

    “Paul,

Hint, hint..he is no longer with the coaching staff of FC Dallas as of the beginning of the 2007 season. – I assure you that neither Morrow or Pareja thought Shaka was the answer, and their concerns were not with the GK, but with having a back-up.

  19. Comment by mh on August 26, 2007 8:21 AM

It is unfair to blame Morrow on Serioux not playing much…still not being in great form. There is no possible way you can fairly evaluate that trade right now. To do so you have to compare both players performance and guess where O’Brian has been this season? The same place as Serioux. Once he is fully fit – might not be until next season – we can judge. They are very different players anyway. All I know is that if Serioux can get back to his game this season it could be decisive for a successful defense. This failure of this move was the bad policy of not fully evaluating a player physically before the move. Major blunder by the medical staff.
