July 12th, 2007 . 5:06 pm . By: Buzz Carrick

In case you missed it, MLS is holding it’s first ever MLS Youth tourney and it’s this weekend in Denver.  At this point we don’t know a whole lot about these players, but it’s the first time A FCD Youth side will represent the parent club in a all MLS Youth event.  Here’s a bunch of PR material on the tournament and the team.

The inaugural Soccer United Marketing U-17 Cup is from July 13-19 at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Park soccer complex. The tourney is in conjunction with the 2007 MLS All-Star Game and will feature 12 MLS Youth Development teams. The tournament final to be played on the Dick’s Sporting Goods Park stadium field on Thursday, July 19 at 11 a.m. CT.  The MLS All-Stars will take on Celtic FC that night at 8 p.m. CT in the league showcase.

FC Dallas assistant coach Marco Ferruzzi is the head coach of the U-17 team that has competed together for two years. The U-17s have participated in other major youth tournaments, such as the Dr Pepper Dallas Cup and Disney’s Soccer Showcase.

The 12-team pool is comprised of the U-17 teams of all MLS clubs excluding Toronto FC and the New England Revolution and with two teams representing the Colorado Rapids. The tournament format will feature three groups of four with the group winners and the best second place team advancing to the semi finals which take place on Tuesday, July 17. The champion will take home the SUM U-17 Cup and earns the opportunity to participate in the 2008 Torneo Quixote in Spain.

FCD will play the U-17 teams representing the Kansas City Wizards, New York Red Bulls and Chivas USA in group play.  The finalists will be invited to watch the MLS All-Stars training session on the Dick’s Sporting Goods Park stadium field on Wednesday, July 18.
