Mina Out, Ricardinho In
June 6th, 2007 . 12:29 pm . By: Buzz CarrickHead coach Steve Morrow today confirmed that FC Dallas is in negotiations with Atletico Paranaense to bring 19 year old striker Ricardinho to Dallas at least through the end of the season and possibly longer. Morrow told reporters the deal is not 100% done and tied it to the condition of forward Roberto Mina. FCD expects Mina to report for evaluation next Tuesday and if he is placed on season ending IR, Ricardinho will be joining FCD and taking Mina’s roster spot. As has previously been reported, Roberto Mina chose to go to Argentina to have a scope done to repair some damage on his meniscus. During that procedure the doctor in Argentina found a ACL tear and repaired it. However, FCD says two separate MRIs prior to the procedure show no damage. Because of this discrepancy and the possible compilations, Morrow was very careful in choosing his words when speaking about the situation.
When Mina returns on Tuesday, FCD will do their own assessment and have Mina do another MRI. FCD is also hoping to get a video of the surgery for analysis by their own doctors to see exactly what went on in the procedure. If after further examination of Mina, FCD feels it is warranted, they will place Mina on season ending injured reserve that will clear a roster spot that can be used to bring in Ricardinho. Season ending IR does not clear cap space however, so Morrow will have to do some cap maneuvering to get the young Brazilian in place. FCD does have some allocation money and the move of Hislop to player/coach will have opened some space as well. In addition the loan arrangement with sister club CAP may allow some creative contract usage to fit the player in. According to Morrow, Ricardinho will arrive in Dallas at the end of this week on a tourist visa. Then early next week, if Mina is placed on season IR, FCD will file the paperwork for a P1 work visa for Ricardinho. “Ricardinho is a young player with very, very special kind of talent,” Morrow says. “We are close to working out a deal to bring him up here. There are some details to work out yet before I can say any more.” P1 visa’s usually take 10 to 14 working days, give or take, so the CAP striker might be on FCDs books inside three weeks. Ricardinho made his first team debut with CAP in 2005 and has played many games for their first team. He has also played for Brazil at the U17 level. At this point it looks highly unlikely that Mina will not go on the IR as ACL injuries usually take an entire year of rehab before the player can resume full training and most doctors will tell you it take a second year before the player is back to the same mental state and confidence in the knee. Morrow did confirm that FCD has options to extend Mina’s loan deal two more seasons, but it seems clear to us here are 3rd Degree, as we said when he went south for the procedure in the first place, that we have almost certainly seen the end of Roberto Mina’s career in a FC Dallas uniform. 24 Comments Comments RSS TrackBack Identifier URI Leave a comment |

fishy fishy fishy in the Mina camp thats fo sho
I wonder if having the surgery w/o FCD approval “voids” his contract? That would be a shame for Roberto who obviously is getting very bad advise. I really feel sorry for this kid because his career is certainly threatened at this point. He’s about to find out that in professional sports you are basically a piece of meat.
BTW Buzz, did you go to practice today? Is a report forthcoming?
Hank, yes. I wanted to get this up first. A full practice report is in the works.
Maybe it’s just me, but I’m not so quick to believe anything the FCD medical staff says. These are the same people who gave Serioux a clean bill of health. In that case, they pointed fingers at other people too.
Buzz, can you tell us how Goodson is while we await your report. That’s the injury I’m most worried about.
Goodson is “questionable” officially. But Morrow said he should be cleared to play. Looks like the injury was more of a bruise/Charlie horse than a pull/tear.
BTW great report Buzz!
sucks for Big Bob but it is good to hear that the CAP partnership is paying off. this could be pretty cool.

his names is ricardinho, he just sounds bad ass. I’ll take him, and besides, FCD can market him as “Brazilian star Ricardinho” and many people will assume he is some awesome brazilian we signed with to keep up with beckham, angel, blanco, and reyna.
i will be pre-ordering my son’s Ricardinho
(Bad @$$ Brazilian) jersey as soon as i get his #.
I will predict #18. Only striker’ish number inside 20 that’s available. Not that you would buy a jersey on my guess.
what is a “pingback”?

Well if ricardino takes mina’s place, he would prob take his # right? I mean strikers kinda like #9
Conor, can’t happen because Mina would still technically be on the roster, just placed on Injured Reserved and would retain his roster number. Ricardinho would have to take a vacant number.
Buzz,
I am a little concerned over all of the talk about the financial moves that will need to be made in order to fit this 19 year old under the cap. Why are we so cap strapped, and how can teams like Ny and LA afford Angel & Reyna, and Donavon, Becks, & Xavier respectively. How are we at the cap when we don’t even have a DP?
FCD has some room to make a move or two and has some things in mind for this summer. What Morrow was referring to is that moving Mina to IR doesn’t take him off the cap. So replacing him would eat up some of the room FCD was going to perhaps use on something else. Morrow was speaking of trying to be as creative as possible with Ricardinho so as to not handcuff FCD for the other things they want to do.
FCD also has a few more mid level (100 to 200k) players than LA and NY. Not to mention LA is already way over the cap and getting worse I hear. Rumor has it they have been told to dump cap.
Great.
Then I can continue to dream about the possibility of a big name from Europe coming in to be our DP.
Yes, even after Ricardinho, a DP is in discussion. Or perhaps 1 or 2 discoveries. FCD is still looking at some things with this window open.
Did Steve Davis take a shot at you Buzz? Here is a quote from his latest “As for Ricardinho, at least people will finally know what he looks like when (and if) he does officially join Dallas, which appears to be two weeks away at best. Two Web sites have already run pictures of other CAP players, incorrectly identifying them as Ricardinho”.
I got my shot of Ricardinho from Furaco, which is the equivalent of 3rd Degree for CAP. So I figured there were right on who it was.
