Mulrooney Traded to Toronto

March 20th, 2007 . 3:13 pm . By: Buzz Carrick

Richard MulrooneyRichard Mulrooney has been traded to Toronto FC in exchange for a partial allocation and the Canadian’s natural first round 2008 SuperDraft pick. The trade opened up a roster spot which FCD used to activate new signing, Colombian U20 Juan Carlos Toja. Toja is expected to receive his work visa this week and join the team in a few days.

According to FCD officials, this move was about clearing room to sign another player. “Richard has been a tremendous professional during his time here, and has been throughout his career, so this was a difficult decision to make,” said FC Dallas head coach Steve Morrow. “However, we are close to finalizing a deal with a player that we feel could make a significant impact on our team and complement the young talent that we have. In order to proceed with those discussions, we needed to make this move. I want to personally thank Richard and wish him the best in his future.” So in addition to activating Toja, FCD clears Mulrooney’s $200k plus contract off the books and acquired a partial allocation to use in acquiring another player.

At this stage it’s hard to evaluate trading Mulrooney until we see the next signing, and perhaps see how that player pans out in the next few seasons. There have been reports out of New England that Shalrie Joseph will ask to be traded, he’s certainly the caliber of player FCD would be interested. But from the language used by Morrow and Hitchcock is seems they are looking outside MLS. One midfield spot looks to have been claimed by Toja, and the interest in another player makes it clear McCarty and Wallace have not been deemed ready, nor Saragosa good enough.

FCD has already admitted being in negotiations with Argentine defender/midfielder Pablo Ricchetti and there are likely a couple other options on the table. Keep a close watch on FCD training reports in the next two weeks for signs of other players coming on trial. Like Takuya Yamada for example, a defender/midfielder from Japan who was recently playing in the J-League with Cerezo Osaka and is training with FCD this week.

On Jan. 14, 2005, FC Dallas acquired Mulrooney along with midfielder Arturo Alvarez, and two drafts picks from San Jose in exchange for Brad Davis, a partial allocation, and a pick in the 05 draft.
