Sources Say Adrian Serioux to Undergo Knee Surgery

Update: FCD confirms surgery.

February 17th, 2007 . 1:51 pm . By: Buzz Carrick

FC Dallas’ newly acquired midfielder Adrian Serioux has been troubled for an unknown period of time by a lingering knee injury that has not healed as well as hoped.  According to sources close to the team, Serioux will undergo surgery to repair the damaged knee.  When reached to comment, FCD officials indicated a decision to have the procedure has not yet been made and that the team and player will make the decision jointly.  While there has been no mention by FCD as to the seriousness of the injury nor a timeline for recovery, early reports from 3rd Degree sources indicate Serioux could miss a major chunk of the season, perhaps even six months or more.  Serioux did train with the team yesterday (Monday) but was held out this morning (Tuesday).  There is no information at this time as to when Serioux might undergo the procedure nor when the injury initially occurred.

Serioux was acquired by FC Dallas this winter from Toronto FC along with a second round pick (that was used on US U17 Abdus Ibrahim) in exchange for Ronnie O’Brien.  The Canadian International won a MLS Championship with Houston Dynamo last season.  Serioux has been penciled in by FCD as one of the two central defender in a probable four man back line.  Due to the salary cap and other roster factors, FCD will almost certainly be forced to go with a younger player like Alex Yi or Clarence Goodson next to Drew Moor in central defense rather than looking for a replacement signing.

Update: A MRI on defender Adrian Serioux’s showed Osteochronditis Dessicans (OCD) in the knee.  According to FCD, in Serioux OCD is essentially a bruise to the medial end of the femur bone that either never fully healed or was caused as a result of repetitive smaller injuries. A surgical procedure will be performed by Dr. Virgil Medlock on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at a Baylor Facility in Dallas to stimulate and speed the healing process in his left knee. Serioux is expected to be out for 4-5 months.
